"Great search-engine best suited for e-commerce"

What do you like best about Algolia?

Easy to load data to, many SDKs available, easy to configure, reliable service.

What do you dislike about Algolia?

The use case we have is a bit odd for Algolia so I keep explaining to stakeholders the design decisions we made.

Recommendations to others considering Algolia:

Great search engine for slowly changing data. Reliability and speed are the best

What problems is Algolia solving and how is that benefiting you?

To construct a set of relevant hotels for given anchor hotel or place.

"Algolia is a best for searches on e-commerce websites."

What do you like best about Algolia?

Very easy to set up, no maintenance needed from our side. Efficient and easy to adapt a ranking formula. Extremely fast search results. We tried to implement on iconscout.com. Here is a sample link: https://iconscout-search.netlify.app

Algolia is brain-dead simple to set up. I've implemented a search with Algolia in a dozen different ways now, and it never took me longer than a few minutes to get the functionality I want. With Algolia, the only challenge is designing your search UI -- if you don't want to use they are baked in UI solutions.

What do you dislike about Algolia?

Costs can escalate dramatically when you expand your traffic. Manually manipulating search results (for specific queries having listings show up first) is a bit difficult to do without custom developing that functionality.

Recommendations to others considering Algolia:

It's less appropriate if you can't afford your data being persisted on a cloud service. Also, if the search is a key component of your business I don't believe relying on a third-party service is worth it. Deploying your own Elasticsearch cluster is not that hard of an endeavor and would also save you money.

However, for any other use case, Algolia will save you a lot of time and give your business amazing full-text search capabilities with minimum friction and time.

Algolia powers all of our search functionality on our browse page and from the header across the site. Specifically, we use the react instant search package with a custom hierarchical menu for category selection and react locations for location selection and the default pagination. We also use Algolia for our search auto-suggestions and recommendations. We also use Algolia to solve interesting business problems and tasks such as categorizing user-generated item titles.

What problems is Algolia solving and how is that benefiting you?

Any consumer-facing business that needs instant search results for user searches. Excellent fits would be e-commerce solutions and marketplaces. If your traffic is low it is also a relatively cost-effective solution than using your own solution (e.g. elastic search). Perfect for teams that do not have the architectural knowledge to set up their own search solutions.

"Need search in your app? Outsource to Algolia to save time and maximize features!"

What do you like best about Algolia?

I love how fast the team was able to get search working in our product. It doesn't take long and there are a lot of built-in out of the box features you can roll with. We opted for the custom API driven use which still didn't take long and then to customize was very simple. The reports are really cool and we look forward to the future expansion and personalization features.

What do you dislike about Algolia?

There isn't too much to not like. I guess the only thing that has me worried is the cost at scale but for our application, that shouldn't be a problem cause the more searching the more revenue it should generate.

Recommendations to others considering Algolia:

I recommend giving it a try as it will save you time and money implementing something on your own. It has very powerful features and the time you save and features you have access to will be worth the cost.

What problems is Algolia solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are using it to help fit our customers into the right product. We have over 500 SKU's and getting the customer the product they are looking for quickly and easily would normally be a challenge but we just dumped in everything to Algolia and then built some facets around it and it's a great solution and took our small team no time to implement.

"Best search system out there"

What do you like best about Algolia?

It's hosted, flexible, and scales very well. It's what ElasticSearch should have been. You can throw pretty much whatever data you'd want to at it, and figure out the indexing later. Facets make searching very slick, and the fact that it's hosted means I simply don't need to worry about Indexing.

Anyone who doesn't use Algolia is just living in the past.

What do you dislike about Algolia?

It can get expensive, but still not as expensive as running OS software on AWS. The only *feature* issues we've had is that it doesn't let you perform cross-index searches. In our specific use-case, we have to duplicate data into multiple indexes because we want customer-specific data (restricted to specific customers of ours) along with our specified data in the same search.

It also requires a separate index for each sort order. That means no ad-hoc sorting (you can't specify to return results in a specific order at search time).

Recommendations to others considering Algolia:

Plan things out before you start indexing data, it can be expensive and time-consuming to make a lot of indexing changes after you have millions of records in a single Index. Also consider search patterns and usage examples, don't index data that's completely unnecessary. Keep your items as small as possible to keep searching fast.

Remember each index can only have one sort order.

Also remember that you don't want to include API keys in a front-end client directly, instead use the generateSecuredAPIKey function to create expiring tokens from a backend.

What problems is Algolia solving and how is that benefiting you?

I've used this now for 3 separate production projects across 2 completely different companies. It gives us blazingly fast search and faceting across millions of records. We use this to generate statistics, as well as provide our customers with results based on their specific searches. We have an entire CRM platform build on top of Algolia.

"We are pleased to say that our clients live a different experience with Algolia."

What do you like best about Algolia?

The searches are fast and without complications, since it has search engines that are updated and from the beginning of having used it, they seek to improve our experience and that of our clients. Technical support is good and has not failed us. They are competent people who know how to serve the public.

What do you dislike about Algolia?

The price is high for small businesses, they must reduce costs so that many more companies integrate.

Recommendations to others considering Algolia:

I have to advise them that when using Algolia they place true and detailed product information, so that each client knows how to evaluate the benefits of Algolia.

What problems is Algolia solving and how is that benefiting you?

Every day we feel comfortable with Algolia because it allows us to make products very easily known and when our customers look for information, searches are fast and that makes people who use it happy

"Algolia is the end-all be-all for search"

What do you like best about Algolia?

Algolia gives me a far better search product than one I could engineer myself, and I had it up and running in a day.

What do you dislike about Algolia?

The terminology they use in the dashboard can be confusing at first. Luckily, I spend very little time in the dashboard, so it isn't a major issue.

Recommendations to others considering Algolia:

If you're considering building your own custom in-house search solution, don't even bother unless you're enterprise scale. Even then, you should weigh the pros and cons of having an internal team build and maintain a project. Algolia is so easy, I will be hard-pressed to ever walk away from it, even if it starts costing a lot of money.

What problems is Algolia solving and how is that benefiting you?

We use Algolia for product and user searches on our app and website, as well as for several internal tools. It's great for pretty much any search use-case that I've encountered so far.

"Awesome and easy to use api"

What do you like best about Algolia?

Easy to use API, with Algolia we are able to delegate all our resources to be indexed, which makes the performance of our application faster. This not only provides for developer experience but also the overall user experience of our end users.

What do you dislike about Algolia?

Well, till now I am yet to run into something I don't enjoy with the Algolia API. The basic/free trial limits could be extended though.

What problems is Algolia solving and how is that benefiting you?

We're building a fashion marketplace for emerging brands in Ghana, We were looking for a scalable and easy to use solution to provide a much more robust search for better user experience. Algolia checks all our boxes by providing an API very friendly for our engineers and also the performance of our product.
