## Aiven for PostgreSQL Reviews
  ### 1. Difficult to integrate with infrastructure as code

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam R. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 11, 2020

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Everything that we deploy works flawlessly so far, but our deployment of choice is terraform and Aiven's terraform provider is quite immature, and poorly documented. This causes problems for us which Aiven have done good work to address some of, but still have some way to go

I like that it has write ahead logging, which cloudSQL doesn't have for cloudSQL postgres, Aiven are more up to date in this regard.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

your terraform documentation! plus your provider doesn't/didn't work as terraform providers should, violating basic assumptions of the terraform framework and causing me weeks of work when it should have been hours. The software felt untested, and this caused us a couple of weeks to sort out (which, to Aiven's credit, we did sort out)

Please see a list of terraform providers that manage to keep up to date enough that they can submit their documentation to the official terraform website https://www.terraform.io/docs/providers/index.html (that's 133 providers). IMO this is an absolute minimum if you're going to be releasing a terraform provider for an expensive paid for product.

This has totally coloured my view of Aiven because your service seems to be working flawlessly and it seems to have unjustly turned me off what seems to be an otherwise excellent product. Logging into the console is a genuinely pleasant experience but it is not a solution to a problem inside terraform - If it's not in terraform it makes it very difficult to interface with our automation.

Additionally, your Aiven_project_service resource is totally overloaded, I get that they probably share a parent object but I think they should be separate resources, When I'm configuring Postgres I don't want to also have to wade through the documentation on elastic cloud, kafka etc as well, this is compounded by the already lacking documentation, which forced me to manually inspect attributes of resources on runs.

Please forget the CEO's/CTO's you're showing your web console, and instead consider the people that will actually be using your software. The business (hopefully) doesn't run because they have sys admins clicking through a UI!

I'm sure your infra is as (declarative) code, there's of course very good reason for it; I want mine to be as well.

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

if possible wait until their terraform provider is mature, go with something with better infra as code unless Aiven gives you something that you can't do without

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're building a bank! It's got write a head logging which cloudSQL doesn't have

  ### 2. Everything works just great!

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** March 29, 2021

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Web UI is really easy to use, and connections to instance are easy to setup.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

If you could setup roles and access for user directly in Aiven UI that would be great.

  ### 5. Simple to use. Seems to do everything right

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** naftali m. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 02, 2020

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The interface is simple but they seem to have thought of everything.
All the info you need to connect, which is what you primarily need to for a DB in the cloud, is provided simply and in a super obvious manner!

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

They do not have a function to dump a database image, be it mysqldump or pg_dump.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were managing our database at EngineYard and we use an extension called TimescaleDB. Aiven provided support for this extension. Or rather, Timescale uses Aiven to provide a cloud-based solution.

  ### 6. We have been using Aiven postgres on production for a year

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alex B. | Web Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 11, 2020

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

- you can choose cloud provider/region
- you have minimal monitoring
- also can connect something like Prometheus for better statistics

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

- a quite hight price
- we want root permission for postgres
- we need something like autoscale by load or scheduler

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We don't want to manage our own database server, so we decided to use DB as service
We can very fast change DB performance.

  ### 7. Great DBaaS

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 09, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

- Fully managed: saves us huge amount of time in maintenance
- Fair pricing
- Attentive support
- Simplicity of usage
- New versions support, features, regions support (both in Amazon & GCP)

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

- Any export / integrations of logs outside of Aiven are quite hard to use / limited / introduce difficulties troubleshooting
 - It would be lovely to have better granularity in the history and zooming-in/-out for the metrics graphs of the different services
 - It would be great to have a failover/backups feature cross-regions

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

Great DBaaS option out there, nice maintenance and versions upgrades support, internal DB features, and extremely attentive, helpful and professional support team

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Relational Database for storing data.
Management / reliability / scalability / monitoring / backups and restores / plv8 support

  ### 8. Postgres User

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Simplicity to build services and database on your platform

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

There is not a tutorial on how to connect to your database with pgAdmin and i have trouble to connect directly to my databases

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

Easy solution to maintain your database

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Problem just exposed in the last question.
Benefits : easy to maintain databases for each environnement

**Official Response from Tuomas Lounamaa:**

> Hi Simon, I think I have what you are looking for: https://developer.aiven.io/docs/products/postgresql/howto/connect-pgadmin.html

Please let me know if we can help with anything else.

  ### 9. Modern Software and Painless Setup

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jose Tomas R. | Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Modern Software:
- Latest version of PostgreSQL database engine available (11.2). Our previous hosted database provider was stuck at version 9.6.

Features:
- Quick and easy database forking.
- Painless Google Cloud Platform VPC peering setup at no extra cost.
- Easy to switch back-and-forth between VPC and public network.
- Direct access to the secondary read-only replica on high availability plans. Other providers usually hide the replica and only make it available when failing over.

Management and Monitoring:
- Good web management console.
- Command-line interface client.
- Terraform infrastructure management. I haven't tested it yet, but I plan to.
- Integration with Datadog infrastructure monitoring service provider.

Security:
- TOTP two-factor authentication.

Support:
- Good email support. I asked some technical questions before I started using the service and the response was fast and detailed.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Pricing and Plans:
- More expensive than AWS RDS and GCP Cloud SQL. However, smaller providers like Aiven take their database offerings more seriously instead of just seeing them as add-ons to their other cloud services.
- Storage options are too inflexible. They start with 8 GB and then immediately jump to 80 GB.

Features:
- Backup downloading is cumbersome. You must use PostgreSQL's pgdump CLI utility, and if you want to download an older snapshot, you must first restore it to a database instance using point-in-time recovery and then create a dump using pgdump. Ideally, I should be able to go to the web console, select a snapshot and click "Download".
- Backup retention time is too short. Business plans only have 14 days, while I think that 30 days should be the minimum for production-grade plans.

Security:
- The current plaintext database administrator password can be obtained from the web console. Access to the web console itself can be protected with two-factor authentication, but I still think that the best password recovery option is the generation of a new password.

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

It may be a bit expensive, but if you want a managed database provider that sees PostgreSQL as a core product and not an add-on, go with Aiven.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have multiple backend services running on GCP that use PostgreSQL for data storage.

  ### 10. Great management, love the hosting options

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jacob D. | CEO / Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 10, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I love the flexibility of the hosting cloud providers Aiven offers. Their integrations are the primary reason I initially looked into them.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Price, but you do get what you pay for so it's a toss up.

I didn't understand the "100% Availability guarantee" advertised only means you wont lose your data, and Aiven will auto-failover, but during the auto fail-over time the database will be unavailable. That caused pain early in my experience, I almost immediately upgraded to a business plan to get a live follower, but I would have preferred to understand the impact and be able to make that decision BEFORE my data being inaccessible for the rebuild time.

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

You get what you pay for, it may be expensive for a hobby project, but inexpensive for production considering the cost of downtime or maintenance otherwise.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Postgres database hosting/management

**Official Response from Tuomas Lounamaa:**

> Hi Jacob, thank you for your feedback. You bring up a great point. Clarifying the difference between highly-available plans and 1 node plans is important. I will take your comment forward to our website team.

  ### 11. Easy to use high quality service

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Simon W. | Mr, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 30, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I can upgrade the service plan of a database quickly and easily with no downtime. Also the point-in-time backup gives a lot of reassurance.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Limited role and permissions management features for administrators, but nothing we couldn't work around easily and I think more granularity is in the roadmap.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using Aiven to host a production postgres DB which handles any transactional and also any personal data for our API. The benefits are fast and easy hosting without us having to implement infrastructure or security. We can easily spin up DBs for dev and test environments.

  ### 12. Surprising performance, great featureset

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John M. | Chief Technical Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 19, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Super simple usage of VPC peering, PGBouncer coupled with amazing performance for a cloud based database. Really encouraged so far.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The UI on the pools page could be a little crisper, and more configuration options about the db pools would be great - e.g. per user connection limits rather than just per-db

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

The features they don't shout about are really excellent - things like being able to run replicas in different clouds or regions is unique.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Trying to fix reliability issues with automatic db management tools, the first clear benefit has been performance.

  ### 13. Aiven is great!

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Electronics | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 31, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I like the all-in-one feel of Aiven best. It's like a swiss army knife for doing DBA stuff. I don't have to worry about setting up repl, getting slow query logs, or backups - it's all just done for me!

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I would love a view that can show me replication topology graphically. I'd also love it if at least the postgres service provided a breakdown of how disk space was being used rather than just overall disk usage. It would help spot things like repl logs piling up for example.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Aiven has made it super easy to do all of the devops kind of stuff associated with running our data stores. We don't need much in-house specialized knowledge and feel like it's less likely we'll miss something basic (backups, etc) only to find out when it's too late.

  ### 14. Great performance, features and service.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Construction | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 21, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I moved to Aiven from RDS as I needed the performance improvements in pg10, and RDS was talking a very long time to make this release available. I've been very happy with Aiven since, my bill is less that it was with RDS, the performance is far better, and I can actually talk to people when I need support. I recommend Aiven to everyone.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Not alot, there is quite a fee jump from the entry to mid tier.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We built a large app with fairly complicated row level security rules. These started to cause major performance problems in real world use. We knew pg10 had optimized this area, so we needed to find a managed DB solution that would let us run recent releases. That's what initially drew us here.

  ### 15. A good introduction to Postgresql as a service

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Ease of use, availability of extensions, ability to use Debezium.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

No Postgresql 12 yet, no direct access to WAL.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Store and manage a large amount of business data and connect the database with an already existing Kafka.

  ### 16. Modern and responsive

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Maksis K. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 02, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Unlike for most services that have Intercom + FAQs, Aiven seems to actually make the proper use of them - the workflow of

enter question in chat ->
it finds related FAQs with answers ->
you can continue chatting if you have additional questions

is actually working. The answers in the KB are up to date and cut-to-the-chase. When we've had less frequent issues, someone has responded to us quickly enough and rectified existing issues. So in short, support + troubleshooting is top-notch.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

There seems to be an overall lack of flexibility for configuring instances. It gives the feeling of "hm, I hope Aiven is good choice because what if we need to change this one parameter later on / run this extension in a different mode", etc. More concretely, it would be awesome to see
- custom machines, rather than pre-built ones (or a screen that lets you price estimate a custom build + request to migrate to that)
- more fine-grain control over the machine (pgtune type-of-stuff), being able to run profiling (eg iotop) on the machine, etc. I realise it's hard to do a lot of this for a managed instance, but it would reduce the vendor lock-in feeling.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to host a managed Postgres 10 and TimescaleDB instance, hence saving thousands of pounds in dev time of setting it all up ourselves.

  ### 17. Straightforward to use and great support

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jasmine L. | Miss, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 09, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Having had various questions on PostgreSQL in general and with setting up different services on aiven, I have found that the support team has been great at responding and providing very relevant and useful information. Aiven handles backups and provides many other functionalities that are useful for db management as well, which is great.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It wasn't clear sometimes what functionalities were available through the API, such as forking a service. This option is available in the UI and also the API, but I found this out on the aiven chat. It would be great to document all these fully in the api docs.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hosting a PostgreSQL db - having finished setting everything up yet but a great experience so far

  ### 18. Professional and flexible

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mental Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 06, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Reason for choosing Aiven was primarily their willingness to include new technologies, specifically the TimeScale plugin. A stable, scalable and secure platform, guaranteed to reside inside the EU with professional services available also played a key role.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Pricing scheme is difficult to work / budget with.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We worry less on database hosting, easy scalability and high up-time. Working with professional providers is a requirement from many of our customers.

  ### 19. Very impressed with the breadth and depth of the service offering

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 20, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

TimescaleDB is available for Postgres; we can specify a cloud+region of our choice; the dashboards and help pages provide an excellent level of detail; the pricing structure is clear.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Nothing, but I have some suggestions, if I may:
1. We only found out you offer TimescaleDB from a Tweet that I happened to find via Google. For us, this is a killer feature, but it was not obvious that you offered it :-)
2. Extremely minor: when I download Kafka credentials (CA, cert, key) it's not immediately obvious which file is for what purpose, or which project/service. May I suggest renaming them as follows (sorry if the formatting is lost when you read this):
    ca.pem --> <projectName>-ca.pem
    service.cert --> <projectName>-<serviceName>-client.cert
    service.key --> <projectName>-<serviceName>-private.key

This makes it super obvious what each file is for.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're using TimescaleDB to store ticker information from financial markets e.g. share prices at a given point in time. Also, Kafka allows us to coordinate data flows around our microservices. Aiven allows us to not be locked in to a single cloud provider and also frees us from maintaining critical stateful infrastructure like Postgres and Kafka.

  ### 20. Very nice features, small polishing then it is perfect

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Electronics | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 11, 2019

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Step by step backups are awesome. Several times saved my life by going pack some minutes.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Postgress user management shuould be easier, now have to do it in the command line

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy setup, stable and PITR

  ### 21. Aiven PostgreSQL

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 16, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

- VPC peering feature within cloud provider
- Database pooling feature
- High Availability

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

- No download logs button for downloading a log for specific time frame
- Integration with external (non-aiven) elasticsearch for log streamings

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

- Easy to setup
- Easy to manage

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can focus on the infrastructure automation, tooling, convention etc, and leave the managed service with the Aiven.

  ### 22. Very nice abstraction layer on top of you favourite Cloud Compute Provider

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 16, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The fully managed services. Before I would have to setup Elasticsearch or Redis on our own cluster, and setup all the backing up myself. Also I mainly switched because that's the only way I could have a fully managed PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB extension.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The Pricing is a little on the heavy side. I think you guys run on 2x (100%) margin on top of the raw Cloud Costs. Which is understandable, I don't know how much work has went into developing your products.

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

Go for it

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our startup needs to store vast amounts of time series data with very big ingest rates. We figured out TimescaleDB extension for PostgreSQL would be the perfect solution, but at the moment as we are just 2 developers we don't have the time and resources to maintain a database ourself. Google Cloud Platform has a fully managed PostreSQL database but it doesn't support TimescaleDB extension

  ### 23. Very easy to set up

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 02, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It's very easy to set up, and the control panel helps you a lot on setting up the basics.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I'm using Postgres, the control panel could be more advanced, making account management and permissions easier for your databases. I can manage that myself via queries, but that's not as easy.

Also I'm experiencing some speed problems. Even though the database is in the same region on Google Cloud, as my kubernetes cluster is, my php responses take close to 1 second, where that locally is no more than 100ms. I'm not sure yet where the problem is as the Aiven dashboard is showing quick query responses. Further investigation required.

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

Easy and quick to set up. Yet you have to invest some time to set up some proper database security (roles and accounts/permissions)

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Google SQL is very expensive. I was looking for a cheaper, yet high available solution. Setting up was quick and easy.

  ### 24. quick support, simple setup, features I need

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Utilities | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 31, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

ease of use, option of cloud providers, access management

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

can't rename a project, missing axis labels in metrics

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

efficient storage and querying of time series data within a relational DB. Other cloud providers would not offer the timescaledb postgres extension which is vital to achieving our business goals.

  ### 25. PostgreSQL newbie analyst

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Health, Wellness and Fitness | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 08, 2018

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Clean interface, minimalist design, easy to navigate

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

No (obvious) query interface or easy way to see schema (that I could find).

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

Have a PostgreSQL GUI/IDE in mind ahead of time for your data analysts.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

chosen because it works with AWS kinesis firehose and many other services (not my decision or expertise)

  ### 26. Very good product

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The interface is great. I like how easy it is to perform fork and restore.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Not enough control when there is an issue or outage. This makes sense because most of the heavy lifting is hidden from the end user.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

PostgreSQL storage as a service... Having the functionality without needing to maintain the infrastructure.

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

- Place in time restores
- Database forks
- Read-only replicas

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Mainly that this isn't the default GCP PostgreSQL. Sorry but it's nice when all your stuff is in one place (or at least a reduced amount of places). I wonder if there's some kind of aggregating console service out there...

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We wanted a managed PostgreSQL service when we moved from AWS to GCP. When I was analysing a bug recently, I discovered the "database fork" feature and was able to easily snapshot the production database (and have it available/connectable for testing) and then fix the data in production to work around the bug.

**Official Response from Tuomas Lounamaa:**

> Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry, Aiven is not part of Google or GCP :)

One benefit is that you can choose any cloud you'd like to use with our PostgreSQL service. If you are looking to simplify your billing structure you might want to look into our our GCP marketplace offering https://console.cloud.google.com/marketplace/product/aiven-public/aiven
