## Aiven for PostgreSQL Reviews
  ### 1. Trustworthy cloud data infrastructure

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 06, 2025

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The standout feature for me is their automated high availability setup with standby nodes - it's genuinely hands-off and reliable. Their automated backup system and point-in-time recovery are key for our disaster recovery plans.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Their pricing is notably higher and the premium for their management layer is significant.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We don't have dedicated DevOps personnel, so this has helped our dev team deploy in the cloud.

  ### 2. Best Free Tier and low-cost benefits

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I think at least SQL selects on Database Free Services

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Aiver solve a need to a large capacity Database to my learning projects and now i dont need a lot of services in so many plataforms

  ### 3. Great service for SQL database

**Reviewed Date:** September 30, 2024

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I haven't actually had any problem using Aiven.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helped have a cloud SQL server, that allowed me to have the best project on my class.

  ### 4. Aiven made Postgres effortless

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cameron S. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It has been insanely easy to get our postgres instances migrated over from GCP to Aiven, with amazing support the whole way.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Primarily, that it is another platform that we have to manage, and it can get pricey, quickly

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is giving us the ability to easily scale our Postgres servers.

  ### 5. Great Platform for Super Fast Setup, Prototype, and Proving out MVP, Use Cases

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Xu R. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Aiven is a fantastic platform for getting up and running as quickly as possible. The cost is very competitive and flexible. The number of database options covers nearly all of our development and POC use cases. It is very easy to provision and to tear down and integrating with our existing development tooling is very simple, and we do not have to worry about usage, egress overages while prototyping and rapidly proving out MVP value.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Some parts are not as customizable and easy to use as I would like, such as managing static IP addresses, customizing environment variables or config settings, and some features that are available in the tool do not seem to be available in Aiven, for example, with Clickhouse, not all of the secondary storage and remote table engines were compatible.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Aiven is giving us a very fast and simple way to provision development databases that are fully compatible with our existing tooling and production environments. In addition to OpenSearch and PSQL, we have also tried Aiven Grafana and Aiven for ClickHouse.

  ### 6. Best Cloud Database Platform I've Used

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shehroz A. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The best part about Aiven for me is how easy it is to use. In my experience as a DevOps engineer, I've worked with many managed database platforms. Aiven has by far been the quickest to setup. It really is a one click setup.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The only thing that sometimes is a concern when using Aiven is that it can be a bit pricey. However, it scales well so it is still good value for money.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Aiven quickens the database deployment and management process. It saves a lot of time compared to other services, which require a lot of manual input such as exposing the right ports. Another big advantage is also the variety of server locations it offers, as we require our data to be stored in specific regions

  ### 7. Highly Recommend Aiven

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mike T. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Before signing upto Aiven, i had a video chat with 2 of the Aiven team who went through how to setup an account through to creating a new postgresql database and where to find the settings, logging etc. Since the video chat, i have now signed up Aiven and created a new database very quickly and was up and running firing a migration to a test database within a few minutes.

When platforms generally say something is easy, take a few minutes i am scepticle, but Aiven was true to their word, it was very easy to setup.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Have not found anything not to like with Aiven as yet.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We currently have an On-Premise database server which feeds an internal billing system and customer facing website. So moving the database to Aiven removes the database server. We also needed a service that was managed to eliminate the need and worry about patching and maintenance and having an Australian Region here in Sydney was a bonus aswell as local support by people nit bots.

  ### 8. Simplest setup

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hernan B. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The simplest setup to try and run managed services, with very competitive prices.

I have been using services from Aiven for 5 years already. There were very few times where we had issues. They were annoying and caused problems, but they were very limited too. The positive side is that staff was always helpful in these and any other situations. While there was (is) not a good and formal ticketing and escalation procedure, support engineers do take the time to debug issues with showing a good understanding of the underlying platform and are willing to help troubleshoot issues (sometimes caused from our side).

Other than those small issues, I highly recommend Aiven!

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Some services (e.g. influxdb) appear to have received less attention to others in terms of integrations. For example, some advertised plugins for metrics and observability apply to most services... except InfluxDB (and maybe some others).

Also, support did not have a format ticketing system that one could use externally -- only email. This appears to be changing this month, so it may be a comment for the past 5 years only.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

No need to setup and maintain services for a cloud platform. Fully managed solutions. It largely simplified our deployments.

  ### 9. Computer Science Class Project Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Luis Santiago S. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 22, 2024

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The simplicity of using the platform and uploading my data

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I don't think there are any issues with the platform or its usage at all.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In the first case, the ease of use when making changes to the database is great, and the support is also very good.

  ### 10. Migrating to Aiven from CloudSQL stabilized our critical database workloads

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Grant H. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 20, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

We have great support and engagement from Aiven's engineers and customer support. They have gone above and beyond helping us with tests for disaster recovery and HA testing. We primarily use Aiven's Postgres offering, and they support tons of extensions and foreign data wrappers. Their datadog integration is turn key and provides good metrics out-of-the-box. I've really enjoyed working with their CLI tool and APIs.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I feel like there is still room for improvement with their HA. A lot of it is DNS-based, so for our workload and applications, we still have some problems.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Deploying and running long-lived production workloads.
Creating and destroying test environments.

  ### 11. Stress-free database management

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dan R. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

As I developer, I'm proficient with interacting with databases and integrating them with our custom apps. However, I don't have a background in database hosting and management. Aiven bridges that gap and allows me to focus on what I'm good at, while handling the areas I lack experience with.

There have only been a few minor hiccups over the past few years, and their customer support stepped in to help quickly resolve the issues.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Support can be somewhat pushy in regards to upgrading to the next tier of service.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our small business relies on custom apps to optimize our workflow, but we don't have any staff with an extensive database management background. Aiven handles that part for us, so we can simply use the database without worrying about a server, maintanence, etc.

  ### 12. Best managed database service I've used

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aadarsh Jha 2. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 25, 2024

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I love how easily I can spin up services like SQL and Redis databases that too free of cost for my hobby projects.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It's an awesome platform but sometimes creating new services may take some time, and I'm totally fine with it.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managed Database services,
Caching,
Learning as a developer

  ### 13. This is a very good product for education. in my class all the students use it.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Abdelghafour A. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

for the moment I have used mysql and postgre I find that it is the best. I'm going to try redis and kafka soon I guess it's great.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

platform for students and teachers that will make things more attractive

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Educational problem.

  ### 14. Great cloud simplification platform

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Reem K. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 03, 2024

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Its niche focus on PostgreSQL. Companies who are able to focus on one main language can expand on it in the future.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Nothing. Seems like a great product with a great marketing team.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Solving Cloud-related problems

  ### 15. Focus on what matters

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Miguel G. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Aiven solutions allow my team to quickly prototype ideas and test them, without having to worry about the "boring" stuff, like DBs maintenance.

At the same time Pro plans allow us to still use Aiven for mission critical parts of our product.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The metrics dashboards, at least for influx, should expose more metrics from the underlying service and computer.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Aiven's PostgresSQL services as one of the core components of our data warehouse infrastructure

  ### 16. An easy to use and very user friendly platform for any open source data connectivity

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anthony S. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It provides easy to configure steps, and I believe new users just like me will have no difficulties setting up their own platform on top. The flexibility offered also quite vast choices in terms of giving me lots of options to configure.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I found the only thing I dislike is the positioning of options switches which is too far away from the description of the options. I guess this is only my opinion, but it would be even nicer / easier if the switches are put closer to the options descriptions.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am planning to create a data mirrors which will act somewhat like a DR data to our on premise open databases. And Aiven provide just the right platform to do the test.

  ### 17. looks impressive

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kamlesh M. | Vice President | DevOps & Cloud Strategy | Product Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 04, 2024

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Open Source products, good for developers

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

A lot of enterprises looking for enterprise grade solutions, for those organization there should be a way to create a package.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

simple but needs etnerprise grade

  ### 18. Fast and easy setup

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Risto L. | Member of Tennant committee co-operation body, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 14, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Great tool for prototyping ideas. Effortless setup process saves time and energy for more business related tasks.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Not so much. Everything seems to work great. Thanks for streamilning and simplifying what I find least intuitive part of creating back end services.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It streamlines process of creating back end service and makes prototyping ideas faster.

  ### 19. Best hosted PostgreSQL solution

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Piotr S. | Chief Technology Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 05, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It's performant, easy to deploy, very easy to scale both up and down.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Regarding psql? Nothing really. It works just great. Maybe they are little bit on expensive side? But you're get what you're paying for.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're using it as main relational data storage.

  ### 20. Review after a quick eval

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andrew S. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

$0 starting costs for evaluating with a usable abount of storage, whilst not appropriate for us at the moment, this is a real plus.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Docs are insufficiently clear about the differnce between AWS RDS sql and using Aiven, takes some reading to work it out.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not currently using as we have existing solutions in place, but we will be looking into use later for future work.

  ### 21. You can't go wrong picking Aiven for Postgres

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John P. | CTO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I've found Aiven's support for Postgres to be much more full-featured than other platforms provide. The uptime and operational stability is (IMO) best in class for postgres, much better than you get from e.g. RDS. I love that it comes stock with a much wider set of postgres extensions than you get from other cloud providers - being able to opt in to using Timescale or PostGIS when you need to is key.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

My minor complaint is that I'm a Pulumi IAC user and I'd like for Aiven to have better support for Pulumi, so that we could spin up infrastructure from within our IAC tool of choice. Ultimately though this isn't the most major deal.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The stability and uptime guarantees that Aiven provides allows our team to not have to hire a postgres DBA to use our database. It's really beneficial because we put some serious load on postgres and it's great that we still don't have to hire someone just for this need.

  ### 22. Great onboarding, easy to set up for a quick POC

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Program Development | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2023

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

UI is easy to use compared to other services, it is easy to use Aiven to create a quick proof of concept for a product.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I feel that pricing is a bit high, compared to other offerings available.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy deployment of POCs, can experiment with new ideas.

  ### 23. eFishery review

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Yahya F. | Sr. Lead Infra & Security, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 26, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

the high availability, the performance and also the response from the aiven team (SLA for response)

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

the static configuration that prevent because of the security reason, we actually want to move our DWH to aiven but because of limitation of the configuration so we decide on makes on our server

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

performance and high availability, we want to solve the problem about the load and have a lot of productivity, also makes our much more productive, and our business performance is increased

  ### 24. Aiven has consistently given our team database management superpowers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 19, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Zero downtime upgrades, database forking, point-in-time recovery, multi-replica deployments, added services marketplace. Aiven has been rock solid and predictable. Focus on core products and services is also greatly appreciated!

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

There is a distinct lack of out-of-the-box alerting policies. It's possible to send logs into centralized storage, but the value of Aiven is opinionated defaults, not making customers figure out how to monitor their databases properly. This seems to be low hanging fruit that should be straightforward to address.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Aiven has allowed us to consolidate all of our HA database hosting needs with backup and disaster recovery mechanisms that we can rely on without ongoing maintenance.

  ### 25. Great developer experience

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Christopher S. | CTO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Really easy to use and well-implemented way to run PostgreSQL without headaches.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The only thing I can complain about is that I had to manually calculate the time offset for our maintenance window, which is a totally minor issue.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Aiven greatly reduces our Ops requirements for managing databases.

  ### 26. Happy customer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 08, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I like how easy it is to navigate the user interface, especially how easy it is to set up a local connection to a remote database.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

To be honest, there isn't anything about Aiven that I dislike!

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed a reliable database provider for our PSQL databases. We had previously dealt with overly-complicated solutions of running on baremetal which just wasn't cutting it.

  ### 27. SaaS as it should be

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Accounting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 08, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

We have already used the service prior to professional use during a group work assignment at the university. The ease of setup and getting things started is what drew me in the first place to Aiven. The hassle-free setup of a database instance, the pre-configured backups as well as the transparent pricing are that make the service a valuable companion.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

As for now, works like charm. Nothing to complain about.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are hosting a JMIX-based application on-premise where we are using the Aiven PostgreSQL as a data backend. Not having to worry about the availability of the DB instance as well as the continuous backups is business critical.

  ### 28. Great use case for cloud migration from the big THREE, demoing this and using Aiven PG to do it!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 14, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Very easy to connect from any provider, always up, always available.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Not much to add here, haven't felt any pain or resistence using the solution, fully supports various use cases.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Decopoloing from big three DBAAS solutions, competative pricing and comparible, if not better uptime.

  ### 29. Great and easy to set up and use

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 22, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The ease of use of Aiven makes it great for a new person to learn and setup very fast.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The billing is quite high and I did not get a chance to try it out before having to get a billed account.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problem we had was the lack of a tool to create ad hoc databases to query on a one-off basis.

  ### 30. Aiven for PostgreSQL is easy to Manage

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jodi S. | Data Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 19, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Easy to manage, we can stop and start service and monitor it via website.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Can not see yet about the download query statistic feature, which we can monitor which query and the average duration of the execution and download the statistics.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Moving our data to the timeseries database. Hopefully, it will be faster than our previous database.

  ### 31. Excellent service and knowledge of the subject

**Reviewed by:** Mario B. | Chief Enterprise Architect, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 06, 2022

Can get a response quite fast within an hour

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Not sure yet what is recovery going to be like

**Recommendations to others considering Aiven for PostgreSQL:**

Nothing in particular. The service is solid.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

IoT Timeseries DB using TimescaleDB Extensions

  ### 32. Great logs and metrics, very easy and intuitive interface.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Professional Training & Coaching | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 09, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

While onboarding during my first week I was able to log into Aiven for the first time and immediately identify the queries that had performance issues and how to fix them.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It requires integrating a third-party provider to your Cloud Infrastructure which creates an extra overhead for handling permissions, security and environment compatibility.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Aiven to handle all of our databases: production, staging, replicas, data analytics and backups. The ease of setup is definitely a major sales point for Aiven.

  ### 33. Aiven PG

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 18, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

It was extremely easy to set up Aiven PG. Aiven does a great job obfuscating the complexities of each underlying cloud provider.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I wish there were even easier "quickstart" items to test functionality.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This was just a test instance :)

  ### 34. Aiven keeps us always confident with our database system

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Online Media | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 17, 2022

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Leisure, Travel & Tourism | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 14, 2021

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

Getting access to a database without the hassle of setting up a server.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

I've not clearly come to terms with what is the actual benefit of aiven compared to AWS for instance - apart from what I said above. Will have to argue about this with my collegues, because they are favouring AWS. In the meantime I hope to get answers by using the product.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My task was to get going with a database rather quickly. Being a startup ourselves we had to get our prototype up in a matter of days. This goal could be reached. Lets see, where we get from there. Next task is refactoring the database without interruption to the product we have so far - hope to be able to achieve this with database forking.

  ### 45. Value-add service for offloading Postgres management, with improvement opportunities

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 25, 2021

**What do you like best about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

The service is simple and easy to use. It is easy to spin up a Postgres instance in Aiven's cloud service via the UI or infrastructure-as-code tooling (such as Terraform) and have this operate alongside our existing cloud infrastructure in a private VPC with no shared access to the internet.

The functionality for enterprise usage of the services has improved markedly in recent months, with facilities for shared group control of an account and centralised billing accounts, just like the big three cloud providers. I have confidence that my data is hosted in a secure facility by a team of experts who understand deeply the systems they are integrated with. The console also surprises me with features I didn't know existed; today I found out Aiven is ahead of the curve by offering SAML authentication as standard. Way to go for not requiring an "enterprise" pricing plan for such essential functionality!

Running services via Aiven is by no means the cheapest option when considering the raw hardware/cloud instance costs, but after taking into account the operational and opportunity costs of running our own database services, it's competitive.

**What do you dislike about Aiven for PostgreSQL?**

There are areas for Aiven to improve around data residency/governance and the feeling I get regarding the safety of my data when using Aiven's services. I would also like to see developments in Aiven's technical approach to managing the services to instil more confidence that this service will adequately safeguard my data.

1. Currently, Aiven services are hosted inside Aiven's cloud provider account, not a cloud account of my own. I do not however understand how our data are safeguarded in the event Aiven were to cease trading or a compromised actor inside Aiven were to gain access to and/or manipulate our data. While Aiven has appropriate audited ISO and SoC attestations, such process-based controls are not the same as hard limits on the ability for a bad actor to move laterally in the event they maliciously gained access as a privileged user to your cloud account. This gives me residual concern regarding the use of Aiven's services and consideration regarding protecting the data by making my own backups outside Aiven.

2. I would like the ability to "bring your own cloud" as standard, for all of Aiven's services. This would take the form of sharing access via a cloud provider's native IAM credentials to a project and binding the appropriate IAM permissions to enable Aiven to spin up and manage its own instances in the project. While this is a function available once usage crosses a higher monthly commit with Aiven, Postgres is actually really efficient and so it will take a long time for even a widely-used, highly-scaled service to reach this threshold.

Offering a bring your own cloud service as standard would resolve many of the concerns around point #1 regarding data ownership, because I would have assurance that my data are stored in cloud infrastructure attached to my own billing account. This reassurance is essential in all cases, but especially so in regulated industries.

As a product feature, Aiven could subsequently offer "cloud-provider security protection" by having its managed services offer to make a backup from the user's production instances in their own cloud into storage buckets in Aiven's cloud accounts (held under Aiven's separate billing). This would offer customers peace of mind that their data are safely streamed out to another organisation's cloud account and thus there is redundancy in the event their own cloud account should be accidentally compromised or lost for some reason.

Furthermore, Aiven should provide direct access to the write-ahead logs.

3. Further to data backups, there is very minimal insight into the controls Aiven has in place around these. Aiven has great backup functionality including point-in-time restores, but to have confidence that they are usable, I need to know they are resilient to various erroneous (even byzantine) conditions in which a user might need to resort to them. Once again, process-based controls are useful for managing risk, but there is always a residual risk which cannot be discharged in Aiven hosting large quantities of user data and thus being a singularly unique target to attack with potentially widespread ramifications for more than just Aiven's own business.

4. Aiven's topology for Google Cloud Platform appears to place all instances and VPCs into a single project on Aiven's side. Is this scalable? How are risks handled here?

5. The console has a number of bugs which introduce operational hazards. For example, the bug when attempting to activate a project in the project selector which the user can see (it is part of a centralised account) but for which permissions have not propagated, thus they do not have permission to inspect inside the project. Rather than present an appropriate "Permission denied" error which interrupts the user's workflow, the project selector will instead silently jump to the next project which the user does have permissions to access. This is very dangerous because it means a user who believed they were accessing a development project, perhaps to remove some infrastructure, can be connected instead to a production project and inadvertently delete the wrong instance! Good operational practices in verifying the project prior to destructive operations are good here, but such bugs do not instil confidence as to other bugs which may exist in the console. I have reported this to product support so I hope it can be rectified soon.

6. Aiven's support staff are great! You should definitely reach out to them. However, it's not clear what the SLA around support is, or how I might upgrade this if I needed a tighter SLA on the services I take from them.

**What problems is Aiven for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are hosting our data in Aiven for PostgreSQL because it offers better features than the native SQL offerings of our cloud provider. This has eliminated the overhead of us running our own database instance, which we may now be in a position to do, but which we certainly could not have done during our initial formative times prior to launch - and even if we were to do so now, it would be an opportunity cost and large risk which may not be appropriate for our organisation at its current size and scale.
