It takes some getting used to, but then it is relatively easy. I like the features of generating reports and getting all the needed information out of it. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** It takes a bit to learn to maneuver it. I feel some things should be just a click away instead of 5 or 6 clicks. A few more targeted areas through out the product weren't hurt either. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** I didn't really solve any problems by getting this. The school district chose this as our program, and I went with it. I wasn't here to use the old program, so I can't company really. ### 2. Each student can be compared to the school statistics as well as other students across the country. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** The screening tests are somewhat long and frustrating for students who are below level. Especially the CBT tests for srudents 2nd grade and above. Students also accidentally lock themselves out of the tests a lot. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** Due to the pandemic, there as been a majority of students who are at least 1 year behind academically. With aimsweb we are able to track their skills, set goals and track their progress. ### 3. It nice and quick to see if students are making progress towards their goal or if the goal needs to be readjusted. I also like that for the younger grades that the fluency passages have more of a phonic base to them where students can use their phonics knowledge to figure out unknown words. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** Since I am a reading I wish that the NWF portion would count whole words read WWR so I can see how students are blending or not blending. I would also prefer NWF emphasis vs LWSF. My reasoning for this is in the 1 min most students never get to the 3 letter blending portion and then I have to give another assessment to see which students are blending and which are not. I would also like a reading level component to the assessments to. I addition do not like all the different screens to get to places, it makes it very confusing for teachers that do not use this system a lot. **Recommendations to others considering aimswebPlus:** See dislike section **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** Currently we are solving the problem of identifying students that need more support. It helps us keep tracking of first identifying these students and then keeping track if they are making progress or need a different intervention. ### 4. It is done one on one, and teachers can true representation of students' skills in certain areas. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** The only struggle with Aimsweb assessments is that it is a rather lengthy process. It can take a teacher 20-30 minutes to assess one student in literacy and numeracy successfully. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** Aimsweb offers a lot of great benefits. It really pinpoints a student's areas of high and lows in literacy and numeracy. However, it is a very time-consuming process. ### 5. The leveled passages are on grade-level with appropriate vocabulary. The passages for the upper elementary students are formatted appropriately for their reading level. The phonics assessments for K and 1 are effective tools for evaluating phonetic progress. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** The reading passages that are on one page for the lower elementary students are too difficult. If the reading passages were formatted like easy reader books with pages to turn or at least broken down in sections on one page; they would better replicate the reading formats in which the young students are learning. Also, the passages do not contain any pictures. Early readers are taught to use pictures to aid in comprehension. Taking time out from instruction to administer the aimsweb assessments was difficult as the students needed every minute of instruction as possible. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** We used aimswebPlus to evaluate student progress with both phonics and reading comprehension. Using aimswebPlus provides a baseline with which to evaluate all students receiving reading intervention. The students in grade 1-5 were reading below grade-level and were being taught in small intervention groups. ### 6. This makes it easy to make arms-length decisions. It also streamlines the RTI and SLD referral process. AimswebPlus also makes progress monitoring and assessing easier and less time consuming, however, there is a downside to this as noted in my 'dislikes' **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** As I say in my review, when we assess students through computer interface, we lost something. We lose the "why" behind their decisions, we lose seeing how they approach a complex task such as decoding or other strategies they might use when they come to a tricky word. The computer interface also has an impact on student motivation and performance. Kids are on screens all day. They are bored with yet more screens, especially when they are not as stimulating as what they have come to expect. However, a teacher or reading specialist taking the time to interact with them 1:1 is a change of pace, grabs their interest, and can be a more powerful tool for assessment. **Recommendations to others considering aimswebPlus:** Consider FastBridge as an alternative **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** Grade 2 and up is all online except for ORF for literacy - this is a problem. That is why we still have to use PALS to assess early literacy skills in grades 2 and 3. the 'comprehension' measure for progress monitoring also isn't reflective of true reading comprehension. Retelling is a much more accurate and interactive form of demonstrating reading comprehension. I understand that these methods take time, but if we claim to measure comprehension, we need to think carefully about the depth of knowledge around comprehension that we're measuring. ### 7. The Test Nav benchmark assessments are too long. Many struggling readers get frustrated by the length and just click away to get the test done. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** As the Reading Specialist in the building, I coordinate the benchmark assessment to rank students for Title 1 reading services and I use it for weekly progress monitoring. This helps us determine which students need learning disability services. ### 8. It assesses their letter and word pronunciation and helps teachers to focus on specific lessons and instructions to help improve their progress. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** Fortunately, I did not have to use remote AIMSwebPlus. This would be my dislike. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** Once again, working with ELL students, this assessment is extremely helpful with progress monitoring. Students with difficulty with English were screened accurately for their regular teachers. ### 10. The assessments are administered via the web and scored immediately. Scores indicate progress when goals are set and are a tool for showing growth or trends in students. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** Aims Plus markets itself as a diagnostic tool, but any digital tool has weaknesses in this area compared to a running record. Student scores may show higher if the student is a good guesser, and lower for students who test poorly. It's not the be all end all, but is most helpful as a screener. **Recommendations to others considering aimswebPlus:** A good tool for K8. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** Aims plus is a powerful tool for helping educators take their first steps in assessment and moving toward diagnosis. Without proper training, it could be misused to group students, but with proper training it's a good tool. ### 14. I especially love the trend lines, and the expected ROI line, so I can see where my students match up based on their progress. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** The student management system for assigning students to teachers feels clunky, especially as a support teacher who does not have a home room of students, but instead a combination of students from multiple classrooms. **Recommendations to others considering aimswebPlus:** It is costly, but if you can afford it, Aimsweb Plus is one of the best ways to go for progress monitoring and benchmark data for reading, writing, and math. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am able to provide nationally normed assessment data with my school team, and build students goals based on the data. It's invaluable from a special education standpoint. ### 15. Main flaws are out of the box usability and lack of truly customizable reports. Powerful system but one size does not necessarily fit all. **What do you dislike about aimswebPlus?** Lacks ability to generate custom reports. Interface is not very intuitive, and it can take a long time to set up certain things for multiple students (a lot of individual, repeated steps are involved.) Help website is extensive but cumbersome. **Recommendations to others considering aimswebPlus:** Utilize their technical support! They are easy to reach, very helpful, and thorough. **What problems is aimswebPlus solving and how is that benefiting you?** It’s an all inclusive testing and monitoring system, and is very data driven. It speeds up data analysis which is often not given the time and attention it needs in a school environment. Reporting is fast and easy for those who don’t have time or the need to customize reports. Most testing is done online and is very easy to conduct. ### 16.
