## OpenCart Reviews
  ### 1. Easy and Flexible, but the Admin UI Feels a Bit Outdated

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

What I like most about OpenCart is how easy it is to use while still staying flexible. It gives a lot of control over managing products, orders, and extensions, without feeling overly complicated

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Some parts of the admin experience feel a bit outdated and less intuitive, especially when compared with newer e-commerce platforms.

  ### 3. Opencart and Journal

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Martin A. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 12, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

Really easy to implement, configure and use. I am using v4.0.2.3 which is slightly fresh, but still find the new technology useful for creating new functionality.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

The layout of screens and emails leave a bit to be desired, so I have used Journal for screens and Email pro for emails.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I rent Gites in France, and I do all of my rentals using opencart. I had to write the module for the calendar, and also for integrating to AirBnB, but the rest is pretty much out of the box.

  ### 4. Extensible and powerful eCommerce platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeff M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

OpenCart's flexibility in terms of extending through OCMods and the theme are foundational to it's power, unlike competitors, it's simple and straightforward MVC layout coupled with trivial themeing making it a no-brainer for eCommerce stores of any complexity.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

OpenCart does take a developer if you are looking to make more significant modifications to the code. I would also really appreciate a built-in database migration tool.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Codifying complex business logic, and retention of ownership of data are the two primary reasons I primarily use OpenCart on a day to day basis.

Performance issues: OpenCart can be slow to load, especially when there are a lot of products or traffic on the site. This can be mitigated by optimizing the server and caching, but it can still be a challenge for merchants who are not familiar with web development.

Limited scalability: OpenCart may not be the best solution for very large eCommerce websites or those with complex requirements. It may require additional customization or integration with third-party tools to meet the needs of larger businesses.

Limited customer support: While OpenCart has an active community of users who provide support through documentation, forums, and tutorials, the platform does not offer dedicated customer support, which can be a challenge for merchants who need immediate assistance.

Limited mobile responsiveness: While OpenCart provides responsive themes that work well on mobile devices, some users have reported that the platform could still improve in terms of mobile responsiveness and design.

It's worth noting that some of these issues can be mitigated through customization or third-party integrations, and the benefits of OpenCart may still outweigh any drawbacks for many businesses.

  ### 7. Opencart - E-Commerce done right.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dave H. | IT Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 15, 2022

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

There are so many good features included with the Opencart base software to list. In a nutshell, it provides you a solid and secure system for creating your own e-commerce website.

I've tried nearly every cart/e-commerce system available and Opencart is my preferred choice. Written in PHP in a MVC(L) structure, Opencarts layout and system are very easy to understand and build on. There are different methods for developing modules to extend the functionality of your store, Opencart includes something called OCMOD which helps you track changes and core edits. This makes the upgrading process (which can be a nightmare with some platforms) relatively straightforward.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

There is not much to dislike about Opencart, apart from it's release cycles.

From a security perspective, new version releases can introduce security issues and bugs. I've always found it better to stay a little behind the curve, opting for the versions before the current release - this allows time for the community and users to pinpoint any bugs or issues.

Commercial/Free Modules - It's great that Opencart provides modules to extend the functionality however a word of caution - Opencart seems more interested in making a profit on these modules rather than their functionality. I develop modules myself and as I'm pro-opensource I give these back to the community at no charge (there are also a fair few other developers who offer modules for free, however, this is becoming less and less). The main points to watch out for are:

1) Use only known/recommended developers - Opencart does not take any responsibility for modules purchased on their website and the ill effects it may cause.
There have been several users which I've helped that had installed a commercial extension, only for this to either introduce security issues or take down their e-commerce store altogether.
As always it's recommended to test any modules in a development environment before going live.

2) Do research first.
There are a lot of modules that get ripped off, including ones I have developed and released. So-called 'developers' take your free (even commercial) work and rebrand (some blatantly sell as is) and sell these through the Opencart Extension store to make a profit.

3) Don't trust others - check their work.
There have been a couple of occasions where seasoned developers have released modules with severe problems in the background. I have previously purchased modules and had to point out to the developers that they left the store open to attack (two examples - Notifications module which allowed direct SQL injection! Payment module with CRSF issues).

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

Opencart is my preferred choice of all the Opensource e-commerce platforms however one thing to consider is the development.

This platform is great if you have some knowledge of PHP, MySQL or MariaDB and general web administration.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Opencart provides a robust and rather lightweight platform for e-commerce. It's very easy to develop and provides all you need to get going with a professional e-commerce website.

This has benefited our company dramatically, allowing for the development of features not available on other e-commerce platforms.

  ### 8. Opencart is very Lightweight, Easy to use with a lot of inbuilt functionalities and customization.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Karan K. | PHP Programmer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

In a comparison of other eCommerce solutions, Opencart is the best one I ever found whether it is easy to use or customize there are n no. of possibilities only your requirements are limit here, to many payment modules to suit your best same goes for shipping methods. There are a lot of possibilities for anyone to extend their store with feature enrich modules.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

In My experience, I did not find anything I dislike so far very good. For developers, I found one downfall in the latest Opencart version 4.0 which is the removal of OCMOD which I believe should be enhanced events are better until there are easy changes to make.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me to built my carrer as an extension developer for Opencart platfarm.

Users who are not familiar with programming also love to use #opencart when it is a matter of scaling their bussiness with #opencart one does not need to worry about the coding and or hiring expensive developers most of the required solutions are already available on the marketplace provided. moreover, opencart module sellers are very friendly and helpful to every customer/user of opencart.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

From my experience, there's nothing to dislike about the opencart platform. In a world full of possibilities there is always room for improvements and it is the only iteration that makes things best over time.

  ### 10. Everyone needs to use!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Peter G. | Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 04, 2022

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

That, I can build a professional web store system with it.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

The basic template is not too nice, and not too feature-rich. Of course, I can solve this problem with extensions, but an average user, who has to choose which platform wan to use, and just glanced at the demo store, maybe the average user may think Shopify is a better choice. But no. NO. No NO!

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

Absolutely!! You need to find a good partner, who can help you develop and customize the store, but if you find the perfect partner, Opencart will be your best choice ever for your live

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hard question. I have the biggest Opencart agency in Hungary. As I see: with an annual turnover of €10-20 million, all e-commerce problems can be solved with the system. Of course need a lot of customization and ERP integration, but Opencart is the best value for money

  ### 11. Low cost system that is easy to use with lots of functions & modules avaliable

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Espen J. | Owner and marketing specialist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 20, 2022

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

After trying several e-commerce systems, we landed on OpenCart. Magento, Nopcommerce Woocommerce quickly would become way to expensive to use and maintain. With OpenCart, we were able to keep the cost low, do everything ourselves without having a programming background. We integrated our store with our accounting system, Facebook, Google Merchant Center, Trustpilot, NitroPack, and Mailchimp with ease. Optimizing speed for SEO was much less work than expected and scoring 80-100 points on mobile all over and 95-100 on desktop all over.
Hosting was easy through a2hosting with a shared setup which we can scale up to dedicated when needed. Since OpenCart is light on server usage, we won`t need this until we have 50-100 active users on the site, and even then, a dedicated server is not expensive.

All in all, without any programming background, we were able to set up a fully functional store with so many modules and functions that woulld be near impossible to get with any other platform.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Hoping that in the future that inventory value, average value, restock system would be more widely avaliable. We bought an extra module that only cost 29$, but it`s not an optimal solution but functional. A better WYSIWYG would also improve product descriptions, but it`s better than most other e-commerce systems.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

If you`re looking for an e-commerce platform that is easy to use compared to other solutions, this is it.
After working with different platforms for 15 years, OpenCart is the most user-friendly system available.
OpenCart is suitable for big and small businesses. From experience, e-commerce systems are expensive to maintain, OpenCart is cost-efficient, reliable, and scalable.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For ease of use, we needed a system that someone without any fundamental knowledge could use, which is scalable for growth. We already see a significant boost in sales and a healthy development of our business.

  ### 12. Opencart is the best open source platform. Very happy to have switched from Magento & Oscommerce

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bill T. | IT Admin, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 01, 2022

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

No need for extensions as it works straight out of the box. (not like Magento). So far I havent purchased any extensions and my ecommerce store works great. However if you need extensions many of them come less than $20 and the support system of extensions is excellent. Just so happy I found Opencart and love the interface. The support on forums is awesome too. I would give 5 stars to Opencart as I ve used many open source platforms and OPENCART STANDS OUT

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Wish the forums has less arguments between users and some users are biased to not help users and only out to sell extensions. Lets have a protocol in place to not put people down and not force users to buy extensions for an easy solution which exists.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Absolutely NOTHING. Minor fixes. As expected for any open source, its not easy to build such a huge platform. OPENCART is quite SEAMLESS

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

From version 3.0 onwards I see that the main configuration of the company is a bit complicated, it shows errors, it does not show me exactly where the error is, the previous versions if they are more comfortable for programs the rest taxes I have no problems

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

Excellent application for electronic commerce that's why I recommend it

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has helped me keep the inventory in an orderly manner, by manufacturer brand, stock product name and making it easier for the consumer user to search for the product they need.

I love the way how opencart loads on every server. You can have a shared server or a VPS in either of these; the shopping cart loads super fast compared to another shopping cart out there. **Reviewed by:** jonathan s. | Web Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 09, 2020

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

so lets have a look at the pros of OpenCart and it's features and benefits:

It's OpenSource - What does this mean?

Well when we look at online web applications or software we see a lot of vendors out there most are using a model of pay monthly/weekly or annually, with OpenCart the model used is free and the only costs involved are the additional plugins or add on scripts and templates that extend the core functionality of the base system.

The code is also accessible this can allow you to modify the look and layout of the template files easily yourself or if you hire a designer or developer to do it for you. The layout system is easily understood as they template files in organised folders and these are known as TPL files which is of course short for template.

It's free!

This means you have no up front costs from the outset unless you need to modify the core code, the good thing is if you do not want to go down the route of hiring a developer or designer to do it for you, if you have confidence and time it is completely possible to do all manner of modifications if you understand even a little PHP.

Don't worry though if you get stuck their forum and it's users are very helpful and searching the internet can help with a lot of modifications that can be carried out on the application.

The Dashboard/Admin section

Let's now look at the most useful functions of the software/application, it's very comprehensive dashboard tracks a lot of the activity on the site managed by the software.

If we look at some of these features like the amount of registered users, tracking visitors and pages they visit the obvious section that is most sought after is the sales, returns and refunds section not only is this accessible from the dashboard but you get a very comprehensive overview which is essential in any online store.

Products, when we look at the products section or when adding products you have a good base for basic stores with functions like:

1) standard products
2) Variable products
3) Digital products
4) Sizes/colours or other attributes of some products

Add on scripts or plugins can extend the base functionality of the products in the store depending on your needs.

Theme the store!

So when a lot of shopping cat software users look for software they look for the ease of creating your own look so your store can be unique.

Well! OpenCart is so simple to theme once you get your head round the Template system, it can be a small learning curve but once you spend a little time on this you reap the rewards and can give yourself a pat on the back. You can create a great store out of the box or go for a unique store of your own.

Hey! but what if I want to use a bought template?

This is simple too, you can buy from their template section of their website some really good templates that are easily added if you can use FTP or Cpanel or something similar by uploading it to your server in the correct folder, this may seem daunting but is usually documented with the template you buy or instructions given in their user doc's.

I have been using OpenCart for shopping cart design for over 8 years and have used it since the early days of inception, I would highly reccomend this software for it's ease of use and simplicity to setup.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Cons?
Not many although some may see the cost of some of the add on that they may require from the add on section of their website to be a bit expensive, if you look at the possible return for that investment it then is very much worth it.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

I would advise anyone wanting to use opencart to read the documentation, yes I know everyone says this but a lot of the questions you may have when installing and using can be answered there as well as on their community forum.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

when running a web design business and development business sometimes it is better to use a solution you are comfortable with rather then reinvent the wheel as this saves time and money, I have used this software for many years since the early days and have seen it evolve into a great application worthy of the highest praise.

**Reviewed by:** Fabiola B. | Abogado, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 19, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

What started just like a tryout, ended being my first option when a client ask for a tool in the online business. Simply it have control over every aspect that care about in any business. The fact that's free and open source it's a BIG pro. It's highly customizable and it has a lot of addons to make it perfect for any kind of work.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Using the software i haven't found a turndown reason, everything works flawless to me and no client have reach me to say that something went wrong with it. But there's a few things i think should improve in OpenCart, at moment of an upgrade, it's not that easy as was the first install, sometimes take too much time setup the upgrades. And the Upgrade dialog information it's not always clear.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

If you're starting your business or simply wanna try a free and open source option to see if you can save some extra money, go for it. I'll guaranteed that you won't regret, this is an excellent tool that it's not that famous how it should.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The big problem that OpenCart came to solve to my clients and many small business it's the money spending. **What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Some modules can be installed and require some modifications in the files that are in the admin and catalog folders. You have to understand the structure and the programming to install some modules which could be complex at some point if you are not very well acquainted with php programming

  ### 43. Probably the best Opensource ecommerce software out there!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chike I. | Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 14, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

I have been using Opencart for over 5 years and oh boy, i am glad i switched to Opencart, we can easily create extensions that support the growth of our business. At one stage, we had over 200 thousand products running on Opencart!!

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

You literally need an army of extensions to enable the software function properly. Though i don't mind, it might be a turn off for certain people who don't have the patience to create extensions all the time.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

If you need a free Open Source ecommerce software then use Opencart and you will never regret it!

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Opencart allows us to sell thousands of products to customers in South Africa, we have even created a POS extension that allows our walk-in customers to purchase without the need to acquire expensive POS software

  ### 44. Great CMS system

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Wholesale | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 20, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

I've been using this system for years now and I think it's a very solid CMS system to create ecommerce websites. It's super quick and easy to get up and running in no time.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Upgrading to newer version can be a pain especially a big upgrade.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I need to have an easy and configurable ecommerce website

  ### 45. Great software, easily customisable

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joe G. | Web Business Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 27, 2018

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

I love that you can easily buy modifications from the marketplace for niche use case scenarios, and if not there are developers that are very knowledgeable of the product so custom functionality isn't a problem. You can also look for themes and they are usually accompanied by a setup/installation guide so if you're not a developer/designer, using this software is a real consideration.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

I find that developing for the platform is a little cumbersome, though this is probably the worst thing about the product in all. Customisation for admin options aren't well documented for the developer community that I have seen, though there are some paid for solutions that blow open analytics and other tech wide open for you in the back end when it comes to looking at sales attribution and use studies of customers on your site.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

I'd recommend this software to people that are looking for a cheap venture into e-commerce. There are better paid-for solutions but if you have someone knowledgeable enough to modify the software in house then this is definitely and cheap and effective solution for your business options.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We wanted to take the step into e-commerce at a low cost. We've achieved sales on the site and an average of 3,000 organic search per month alone. Along with Google ads, we've managed to get user input to help shape the site and continue growing in to a competitive retailer in our sector.

  ### 46. Free and Quick to setup

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anand K. | Freelance Project Manager, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 04, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

Its Free, Being updated constantly, the community is huge!, many plugins available. I was able to develop it without any hassle and problems. The installation is straight forward. There are many themes out there for this eCommerce Platform. If you require paid support. Its available for the developer. The last version is improved further then the previous one.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

bad installation documentation, not clear and precise info on error messages. I had many problem upgrading the opencart to the latest version. The upgrade information is not clear. I had to google many times and look for paid solution for this.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

Think carefully before migrating. Look for the plugins you need first before jumping into it

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I developed eCommerce site for companies who has small budget and want an eCommerce site. For this i have realised the objectives of small companies to have a simple eCommerce site for them.
I made it easier for small business to have an eCommerce store. Building and managed eCommerce store is not an easy role. WIth opencart you are able to do this.

  ### 47. Opencart, love it

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Warehousing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 22, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

Open cart is easy to use, and the entire order process is smooth flowing.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

I would have a few more upgrades, as open cart is not as advanced as some other ordering systems I have used

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The ordering process from beginning to end, being able to configure it to our specific needs

  ### 48. Opencart is a stable, fast, developer-friendly shopping cart platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Russell B. | Full Stack Web Developer, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 11, 2018

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

Opencart is 100% free open source software. Its really free. The framework is fast, stable, secure, and follows modern web development principles. It uses an MVC architecture on the backend, and has bootstrap and jQuery ready to go out of the box for the front end. Its extension marketplace allows users to expand functionality cheaply.

I often use it to develop non ecommerce applications simply because its so feature rich, it can speed development time greatly.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

Opencarts lack of documentation is a major barrier to adoption. As free open source software, the developers who do work on the project concentrate their time building features, not making documentation. When I began using it there was no training or educational materials available. I had to teach myself. I have personally created a Udemy training course to fit that market need, and have seen success with it.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Opencart is just a php framework, so you can build anything you need to build, provided you know the language. I have built everything from employee scheduling software, timeclock software, sophisticated data entry and reporting tools, even gps tracking of vehicles on the framework.

  ### 49. OpenCart for Businesses

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shane G. | Lead COV Palletizer, Program Development, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 08, 2018

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

I like how customization OpenCart is. There are hundreds of addons, and if there isn't one that suits your needs, you have full access to the script to make your own. It comes preloaded with lots of options and features. There are lots of free ones, and the paid addons aren't too expensive generally. It's easy to setup, only taking a few minutes to configure. Updates generally aren't too difficult (Though this does depend upon the number of addons you have). It's being actively developed as well. The scripts are being improved, and kept up to date on the latest web technology such as using Bootstrap 4. They think forward, to make sure that OpenCart stays relevant.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

There are too many features at times, making the admin section of the site rather crowded at times. It's not easy to hide them either, without editing the html. The new template script is rather annoying now as well. It complicates things at times, instead of making things easier. Long developmental process can be difficult at times. More frequent updates would be nice, instead of yearly larger ones.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

It's lightweight, high customization, and looks great. It's not too difficult to code for either, making it a great e-commerce solution.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With how easy it is to create your own addons, I'm able to create a store that better fits the needs of the company. Not every store has the same needs afterall. With OpenCart, you're able to make a site that is tailored to you.

  ### 50. Easy to Use, has limitations like everything else.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 22, 2018

**What do you like best about OpenCart?**

OpenCart is easy to use. It has a clear layout, easily identifiable and logical menus. It is a free download, and the add-ons are inexpensive, so it is good for small businesses and people who have multiple stores. It is easy to setup multiple users with different logins and rights, from full Admin to folks that can see invoices and information they need, without having rights to make changes anywhere on the store.

**What do you dislike about OpenCart?**

It can be glitchy at times. You make changes, and the next day it reverts back. Some features that are add-ons should be standard. I wish there were better reporting options.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenCart:**

OpenCart is a good platform for any ecommerce store. It is easy for all users from admin to sales rep.

**What problems is OpenCart solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have 12 open cart stores, and OpenCart makes it affordable and easy to use. We can get everything we need and create 1 store the way we want it, then copy it to use on another so we don't have to reinvent the wheel with each store.
