# Which sales tax and VAT compliance tools file returns automatically rather than only calculating what is owed?

Most tools in this space are excellent at telling you what you owe. Far fewer actually submit the return and move the money, and the gap between those two things is where late fees live.

So which sales tax and VAT compliance tools file returns automatically rather than only calculating what is owed? Worth separating before you shortlist:

Calculation only, where rates and taxability are applied at the transaction

Prepared returns, where the filing is drafted but someone still submits it

Full filing and remittance, where the return is submitted and the payment made

Registration included, where the provider also gets you set up in the state

DAVO Sales Tax sets aside the tax collected each day using data from the POS, then files and pays on the due date. It is scoped to sales tax and to supported POS systems, so businesses with other tax obligations will still handle those separately.

Vertex leads with determination, applying jurisdiction rules inside the ERP so rate changes land automatically, with returns and filing as a separate part of the platform. Reviewers describe it as automating the large majority of taxability decisions, with unusual local rules needing rules configuration.

Avalara offers managed returns alongside calculation, handling multi-state filings each month so an internal accountant does not prepare them.
I’d look closely at what still needs human review before submission. Even with managed filing, exception handling, reconciliation, and funding checks can leave finance doing more month-end work than the “fully automated” label suggests.
