# Which library management systems enable a better patron experience without expensive manual workarounds?

<p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">Hi, library folks on G2, hoping to hear from the people who run or research these systems day to day. Which library management systems enable a better patron experience without expensive manual workarounds? </p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">Let me spell out what I mean by manual workarounds, because it's the heart of the question. A patron wants to renew a book, so they phone the desk. Someone needs a room, so staff open a spreadsheet. Holds live on a printed list. Every one of those is staff doing by hand what the software should let patrons do themselves. So the real test of patron experience is simple: how much can a patron do on their own, without a staff member stepping in?</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">From the<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/library-management-systems"> </a><a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/library-management-systems">Library Management Systems</a> category, I got three different answers:</p><ul>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/apollo-ils-lsp/reviews"><strong>Apollo ILS/LSP</strong></a>: made only for public libraries, with self-service at its core. Patrons renew, place holds, and check out on their own. Reviewers rate it among the best-loved systems in the category. The catch: public libraries only, mostly smaller ones.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/koha/reviews"><strong>Koha</strong></a>: free, open-source software. No licence fees, and the patron catalogue can be shaped however the library wants. Reviewers agree it keeps getting better. The catch: it needs technical skill, your own or a paid support vendor's, so the saving shows up in licences, not in effort.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/libanswers/reviews"><strong>LibAnswers</strong></a>: not a full library system, to be clear. It adds chat, FAQs, and a knowledge base on top of whatever system a library already runs, so patrons get answers without queueing at the desk.</li>
</ul><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">Two questions for the room. What belongs on this list that I've missed? And has a self-service feature ever backfired on you, creating more desk work instead of less?</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true"></p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true"></p>

&lt;p&gt;The key is measuring total staff effort, since a self-service tool can still create manual work through setup, maintenance, accessibility issues, or patron support.&lt;/p&gt;
