&lt;p&gt;One full term of parallel running is the single biggest protector, expensive as it feels. Data loss almost never happens in the transfer itself; it happens in mapping decisions made by consultants who don&#39;t know the institution&#39;s quirks, so put a registrar in the mapping room from day one and make retraining part of the project rather than an afterthought at go-live. And the teams I&#39;ve heard describe their migration as something they&#39;d willingly repeat all credit strong vendor project management, which points toward the Jenzabar pattern you cited.&lt;/p&gt;
