# Where's the quickest place to start when searching for a file in a busy Microsoft Teams workspace?

A question I keep coming back to is where to start searching for a file in a busy Microsoft Teams workspace. The quickest route, from what people write on G2, is the channel or chat where the file was shared: open its files and narrow from there, rather than searching the whole workspace, which is the search people find clunky once volume builds up. That works because channels are one of Teams' real strengths, keeping files, conversations and real-time co-authoring together in one place.

For video conferencing and collaboration buyers, Teams fits organisations that keep their work in channels. Files shared there stay findable months later, open without switching apps, and stay on one version thanks to co-authoring. Teams that share mostly through private chats get the same tools with less structure to search by, which a simple share-in-the-channel habit fixes.

Does your team have a rule about where files get shared? And where do you start when you're looking for something from a few months back?

Has a share-in-the-channel rule actually stuck for anyone? We're about to introduce one and I'd love to know how you got people on board.
