# What should HubSpot Sales Hub admins map out before setting up pipeline stages and deal properties in separate places?

I've been digging into what HubSpot Sales Hub admins should map out before setting up pipeline stages and deal properties, since the two are configured in separate places. The visual deal pipeline is the payoff, with deals moving through stages, tasks automated along the way and dashboards showing activity in real time. The extra effort comes before that, because properties are created in one place and stages are defined in another, so admins who map the process on paper first, stages, the properties each stage needs and who fills them in, describe a much quicker build. Highly specific workflows that call for custom objects are where people mention needing admin experience.

Going by G2 reviews, forecasting opportunities that span several products is the other place a custom process needs extra thought. Across CRM tools, the deciding factor seems to be how standard the sales motion is. A conventional pipeline maps onto HubSpot's stages almost directly, while a process with unusual objects or multi-product deals suits teams that have an admin to own the setup.

What I'd like to hear from admins who've built one:

Did you map stages before touching settings, or adjust as you went?

Which properties did you make required at each stage?

How many stages before reps stopped updating them?

Have you rebuilt a pipeline since launch, and why?

For teams with more than one sales motion, did you use separate pipelines or one pipeline with properties to tell them apart?

We mapped stages and required properties on one page first, and the build itself went quickly. The visual pipeline keeps reps and managers looking at the same thing.
