# What's actually the difference between a Q&A platform and a regular community forum, and does it matter for cutting support volume?

Curious how the community and support reviewers here read this one. What's actually the difference between a Q&A platform and a regular community forum, and does that difference matter if the goal is cutting support ticket volume?

G2's own definition draws the line at format: Q&A tools hold short question-and-answer pairs, forums hold long-form discussion. That's true but it undersells why it matters. The real difference is that a Q&A thread can close. Somebody asks, three people answer, the asker marks one accepted, and from then on that page has a verdict at the top. A forum thread never closes: the fix is in reply 14, below two off-topic replies and a "same problem here." For support deflection, that's the whole game, because a customer arriving from Google reads the top of the page and either leaves satisfied or opens a ticket.

The Q&A Platforms category on G2 has both formats living side by side, which makes the contrast easy to see:

AnswerHub (Rated 4.3/5): The pure Q&A model for developer communities, with accepted answers, reputation points and badges. Scores 0.98 on Q&A, the highest in the category, and 0.95 on Voting. Trade-off: a small, older product with the lowest Market Presence in the Grid.

Apache Answer (Rated 4.3/5): Open-source Q&A under the Apache Software Foundation, the format without a licence fee. Trade-off: you host it and you moderate it, and Voting scores 0.77.

Discourse (Rated 4.0/5): The pure forum model, open source with a "solved" plugin that bolts an accepted answer onto a discussion thread. Bettermode (Rated 4.7/5): A customer community platform with both spaces in one product, plus a no-code page builder and embeddable widgets so answers can appear inside your app. Public vs Private scores 0.95. The idea that a Q&A thread can close while a forum thread never really does is the whole argument in one sentence. AnswerHub's 0.98 score on the Q&A format specifically backs up why that structural difference actually shows up in practice, not just in theory.
