# What are the best learning management system (LMS) platforms for instructional designers creating role-based learning paths?

The real test here isn't whether a platform can technically support learning paths; it's whether an instructional designer can build and maintain them without constant admin hand-holding. Looking at reviewer accounts in the G2 LMS category, two names came up most for genuinely flexible role-based path design: Absorb LMS and TalentLMS.

Absorb LMS: Reviewers describe assigning courses "based on department, division, job title, or responsibility" and building proper learning paths rather than one-off course catalogs, with one reviewer specifically praising the ability to combine onboarding, role-specific development, and leadership training within the same structure.

TalentLMS: Reviewers credit structured learning paths with getting new hires "up to speed faster," reducing the time senior staff spends on basic instruction, and the Branches feature for managing multiple departments or customer groups separately within one account.

For designers building paths across several departments at once: once you've mapped a path to a role, does either of these handle it cleanly when someone changes roles mid-path, or does that still require manually reassigning their progress?

Along the same lines, what happens on either platform when the underlying course content in a path gets updated after someone has already started it? Curious whether a designer has to manually flag which learners need to redo the specific module, or if that flows through automatically too.
