# Is a paid CAD viewer like DraftSight worth it when free tools like DWG TrueView already open and share DWG files?

<p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">Fair question that a lot of teams wrestle with: if DWG TrueView opens and shares DWG for free, what are you actually paying for with something like DraftSight? I pulled reviews on both to see where the money goes.</p><ul>

<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/draftsight/reviews"><strong>DraftSight</strong></a> (4.2, 209 reviews): Reviewers who pay for it point to editing and creation on top of viewing, strong handling of large professional DWG files, and a comfortable dark or light interface for long sessions. Several switched from AutoCAD purely to cut cost while keeping real drafting ability.</li>

<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/autodesk-dwg-trueview/reviews"><strong>Autodesk DWG TrueView</strong></a> (4.4, 75 reviews): Free, and reviewers are clear-eyed that the tradeoff is limited editing, thin 3D, and struggles on big files. For pure view, print and convert, they say it's plenty.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/design-review/reviews"><strong>Design Review</strong></a> (4.2, 17 reviews): Another free option reviewers use for viewing and marking up across formats. Small review base, so take it as a lighter data point.</li>

If it's genuinely view-only, does paying for DraftSight make sense for you, or is it only worth it once editing enters the picture? If the need is genuinely view-only, the free route tends to hold up fine. The money starts making sense the moment editing enters the picture or big professional files start bogging the free tool down.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
