# How can you keep Microsoft Teams running smoothly on an older laptop during video calls?

I'm putting together tips on keeping Microsoft Teams running smoothly on an older laptop during video calls. Teams brings chat, meetings, screen sharing, files and AI note-taking into one window, which is exactly why people keep it open all day. Going by reviews, an older device feels the load when several chats, a meeting and high-definition video run at the same time, especially on a patchy connection, and closing the chats, meetings and apps you don't need before a call, plus trimming notifications, keeps video and screen sharing smooth.

In video conferencing, it depends on how much you ask one app to do at once:

Scheduled meetings only. Older hardware copes well.

A full day of chat, files and calls. A quick tidy-up before important calls keeps things responsive.

Presenting with screen share. Closing other apps first gives the presentation the most headroom.

People who run their whole working day in Teams get the most from having everything in one place, and a minute of preparation keeps that true on any laptop.

What has helped most to keep your calls smooth? And for IT teams, has device age become part of rollout planning?

Closing the chats I'm not using before a call has become a habit, whatever the laptop. Having chat, meetings and files in one window is why our team lives in Teams.
