Smartsheet is an incredibly flexible tool. Initially, many see it a an easily shared, cloud based spreadsheet. From the spreadsheets, report sheets can be created to summarize the information recorded. With the use of forms, specific user interfaces can be created to input data to the spreadsheets. With the dashboards, administrators can create web pages to display spreadsheets, reports, and to display charts and graphs of the the data. Administrators can even limit the data displayed based on the user accessing the dashboard. With plugins, Smartsheet can communicate with multiple other tools, including Jira.
Far more than a simple spreadsheet in the cloud, Smartsheet combines the best of a spreadsheet with a web site. One of the uses a previous employer used Smartsheet for was to create a Form to accept User Stories. The Form would display only the data input fields needed based on the user input and logic included in the form as to which fields should be displayed based on the input. The gathered data was stored in a sheet, summarized in a report and the report was then handed to Jira via a plugin. Changes in the Jira User Story status were reflected back to the Smartsheet system and a Dashboard would display a summary of the progress of all the stories being tracked. This simplified the input process for our users, made sure that all required information was gathered from the user submitting the report, and guaranteed the User Story created in Jira was ready for grooming and assignment with a minimum of intervention or requests for clarification.
Smartsheet has hundreds of applications and I would strongly support anyone needing the advanced capabilities in their decision to use this product.
