On occasion, references are verified through HMRC employment records instead of obtaining a direct reference. Providing an explanation for why this approach has been used would improve transparency and understanding of the outcome. Queries can sometimes take longer than expected to receive a response. On the HMRC point, we actually offer a layered approach to referencing: direct verification through databases like HMRC for instant, high-confidence results, alongside traditional referencing where we contact referees directly. Both are included in your reference package, and you can use either or both depending on what's needed for a given check. Using both together tends to give the fullest picture while still getting results back quickly. If you'd like to explore this option further, I'd suggest getting in touch with your account manager.
