What I like best about Upwork is the ability to peruse a diverse talent pool and work within my budget. I've met wonderful freelancers who I hope will be part of my team for a very long time.
I also very much appreciate the system for reviewing proposals and the option to shortlist candidates, and the messaging is functional as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I don't like the fees. I think the fees are just outrageous. I understand the importance of encouraging long-term relationships between freelancers and clients, but sometimes jobs are just one-time contracts and do not have room for a long-term relationship. While I do like the sliding scale, 20% is just too much to take out of people who are just getting started in their freelancing careers and very discouraging.
Also, to take a working relationship off of Upwork, they calculate based on full-time hours even though I've NEVER hired a full-time employee or freelancer. I want to pay my freelancers more, but it's not fair that Upwork gets such a huge chunk of it, rather than the hard-working freelancer.
If the fees weren't an obvious gouge and so distinctly unfair, I would ALWAYS hire from Upwork and I would give them a 10-star review. Unfortunately, because of the unfairness of the fees against freelancers' pay and the cost of moving away from Upwork, I'm looking more at other platforms now, like Fiverr.
I don't see that Upwork has a clear advantage anymore, aside from mediation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
