Before we started using it, calculating tax across all 50 states and thousands of local jurisdictions was basically unmanageable—especially since prepared food, grocery, and supplement items are taxed differently in nearly every state. TaxCloud handles all of that automatically at checkout in real time, so we don’t have to maintain rate tables, build custom logic, or worry about applying the wrong rate to an order.

Economic nexus tracking has also been a big win for us. As we expand into new states, TaxCloud monitors our sales against each state’s threshold and alerts us before we cross into a new compliance obligation. We’ve never had to manually keep tabs on where we need to register; it surfaces what matters when it matters.

Filing and remittance are what really make it worth it. Instead of dealing with a different return process everywhere we sell, TaxCloud registers, files, and remits on our behalf. In Streamlined Sales Tax states, the filing cost is even covered, which is a meaningful savings.

Overall, the biggest benefit is that we can run a multi-state D2C business without needing an in-house tax team or a custom-built tax engine. Checkout totals stay accurate, expanding into new states doesn’t require engineering work, and we’ve eliminated what would otherwise be one of the largest hidden liabilities for a fast-growing online store: uncollected or under-collected sales tax.
