I was responsible for the distribution of purchase orders. We sent invoices by email and left them in the inboxes until a supplier called to ask about paying them. I had no idea what I was spending or who I was spending it with, and supplier risk only became an issue when something would break. Strategies just couldn't keep up with what buyers were doing. POs and invoicing are now handled by central purchasing. I see spending coming in and keep an eye on my suppliers, so that when a staff member has to explain the financial implications, it's not a surprise. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It wasn't pretty, and it was a bit of a mess. Our first implementation was done by system integrators. Basically, there were some hidden costs involved in the integration and middleware. It took my team a few months to get the hang of the system. It's a real pain. The costs went up and the connections grew steadily, and everything got better. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
