For the various pay categories, such as regular hours, holiday, commission... you have to click on View More when you're double checking payroll before submitting it. It doesn't just display them for you up front. It's just an added step that I have to take for each and every one of my employees before I can submit payroll. In addition, I'd like to be able to add and delete my own pay categories. For instance, if I'd like to have a category for training hours, I'd like to be able to create that category without contacting someone at paychex. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** Consider all of the features that are vital to running your business smoothly, then compare pricing, apples to apples, across 2-3 providers. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** I can send New Hires their paperwork with a click of a button. Once they complete it, it's all set to go in Paychex's portal. They also take care of all of my payroll taxes, inc. Worker's Comp. You can also manage your retirement account, see contributions, and get digital copies of pay stubs. Also like that you can create supervisor accounts to manage individual teams. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** We used to use a retina scanner, and we often had issues with it connecting to timesheets. Hours were not being recorded properly and often had to be corrected by supervisors. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm not sure if it's solving a problem as much as providing a necessity. It is absolutely essential to be able to track employee hours and give them a place where they can track their time off and see benefits. ### 8. The worst support I've ever experienced. The product itself is excellent. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** I can never get my assigned customer service rep on the phone. Frequently all requests take between 2-5 months to process. The communication is atrocious. Not unkind, not disrespectful, just bad. They are incapable of completing requests as described or in a timely manner. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** The best thing I can say is that the calculation of OT pay is some of the best I've experienced. The amount of helpful tools is astronomical. Again the product is phenomenal. ### 9. I had to call to remind them about my payroll. Every single time a different person processed my payroll, things were wrong. They had no clue on how to run it, and there was me at the end of the month finding mistakes and asking Paychex for corrections. I created several cases and requested a follow-ups but nobody reached out. To Paychex We were just a small busniness, just one number. I hired them to do our company's payroll and found out two years later that they didn't submit our W2 s to the SSA. I just received a letter from the IRS telling me that I owe $7,743.56 in penalty charges!!! Getting someone to talk to is nearly impossible, much less getting them to help with anything. The communication is atrocious with their cumbersome departments and extremely high turnover of team members it's impossible to get anywhere with them! **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** The limited software worked sometimes. I haven't used a competitor so far, but I haven't found a reason to do so. After changing jobs and being tasked with finding an affordable option for a young company with a small budget, I went back to Paychex to see what they offered, knowing that they were usually the most reasonably priced. I found they'd made some upgrades as they introduced me to Paychex Flex. Flex combines T&A, 401k, reporting, and payroll all in one dashboard that's not unlike other competitors, but in my opinion, is a more straightforward and user-friendly option. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** There's always a bit of a catch, but this one isn't anything I was worried about. Generally, my representatives with Paychex have been great. Just as much as I needed, I don't love being bothered by frequent inquiries about the experience and "check-ins". However, sometimes Paychex has a bit of turnover and you find yourself with a representative that's less responsive. While that might bother me if that person was my only option, Paychex gives you a team that you can reach at any time. Just call, if your rep isn't available, or hasn't responded to an e-mail, someone else is available and they've always been knowledgeable and able to solve my problem over the phone quickly. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** I needed a one-stop shop; I don't like multiple logins and Flex includes all my modules in one place. This keeps me informed about what's going on in other areas but allows me to quickly get where I need to go without wasting time trying to remember 4 or 5 logins. ### 18. The onboarding is also difficult, attaching new EEs to the company. They seem to have enough infrastructure so that as we grow, we will be able to expand to more employees as well as services offered to employees. The support is outstanding, even though I'm on the lowest tier of support. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** Reporting is very un-intuitive. Payroll reports are all generated on-the-fly to PDFs that can be downloaded, and it's nearly impossible to filter or aggregate data across pay periods using the paychex flex interface. Some of the additional services (e.g. HRA benefits administration) are much more expensive than other standalone competitors. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** Paychex Flex is solving the problems of paying employees as well as the government compliance bits. They continually offer new services (e.g. workers comp, 401K, onboarding documentation) that reduce the time and effort spent on these things on my side. ### 21. Paychex accurately takes out taxes and any deductions. The majority of our staff are set up for direct deposit but it's an option to get a live check. Telling them that they were being let go. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** If I could say it in one word: EVERYTHING. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** We used the same payroll company for over 25 years, and when that company sold to Paychex, we decided to just stay on. What a mistake that was!! We didn't realize any "benefits" from onboarding with Paychex. It was a disaster from the beginning and just got worse as time went by. From the countless errors, to being completely ignored - even by a supervisor, to taking money out of our account (without permission or notice), to our company getting (2) letters from the IRS for improperly paid and mis-calculated payroll, to them not updating the Unemployment percentages for the new year, this is the worst company I've ever dealt with. No one, but NO ONE, in the entire company cared about their customers or the service they were providing. In fact, on one particular payday in December, 2021 (bonus day), the payroll did not get released and when I phoned the company to ask my rep about what the problem was, I was on hold for 25 minutes and got hung up on, only to call back and wait 20 more minutes, to get hung up on AGAIN. Their employees, while most were pretty friendly, were seemingly untrained in the software and appeared to be completely overwhelmed. The supervisor I dealt with actually admitted to me that most of the employees there didn't even know how to read their payroll reports and were having issues with the software. **Official Response from Candice Williams:** > Hello Sherry. Since then, our use has been expanded to employee performance reviews, training, benefits tracking, and even company directories. **What do you dislike about Paychex?** Adding some of the training files from our previous provider was cumbersome at times. The ability to sync data between the predecessor and Paychex could use some improvements. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** An improvement to our employee's performance reviews has been realized and recognized by our employees and by the management staff performing the process. My dedicated account person is very frequently out of the office. If I email her about an issue that has multiple factors, she typically responds about only one so I have to email again to ask the other questions again. I discovered an error on someone's final payroll in their tax setup and was told it would take 4-6 weeks to correct. I checked in after 6 weeks and 3 days later she replied and said she hadn't ever submitted it to the dept who would process the correction. I emailed her supervisor that day and heard nothing back so I called the supervisor a week later and now it's been another week and I've still heard nothing back. I called the general customer service line today and they refused to route me to anyone other than my dedicated account person. There are also issues in the software itself that are annoying, inefficient, and/or confusing little issues that you have to learn how to work around. Example: when I enter a new salary, the first field on the form is the dollar amount. If I change the value in the drop down on the next field, e.g. from Hourly to Annually, the system deletes the info I entered in the first field and I have to re-enter it. There are many little issues like this and the others are a little more complicated. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** They are creating more problems than they solve right now. I do NOT recommend this company. ### 36. The process to enter in a new hire isn't well organized. I don't like the reporting features. **Recommendations to others considering Paychex:** It is a basic website but wouldn't recommend it if a business needs a lot of reporting done or needs to track a lot of detail. I struggle with finding the exact information needed to run custom reports. I'm not a fan of the general employee setup, as the onboarding isn't very fluid and there aren't enough field for the detail I prefer. The website tends to be a little hard to find some of the basic tools and information. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have been able to consolidate some of our reporting and put out policies and communications onto the Flex feature for employees. Reports are not set up very well - often an employee is started on one page, then the remainder of the info is on another page of the report (orphaned pages). Users are unable to easily manipulate reports to gather only the needed information. Often have to contact payroll representative to have reports created. "Help" info is outdated and does not correspond with current information and instructions. Entry screen moves after entering data, causing user's curser to be in incorrect area for next entry. **What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?** Able to enter various tax municipalities so employees' withholding is correct.
