  ### 8. Cost efficient, HIghly performanance 3D-CAD Tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Industrial Automation | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 17, 2021

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

It's light and fast enough to be designed using a portable laptop in a remote workplace. The maintenance cost is also resonable, so I am really satisfied with the price/performance ratio.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Lack of native libraries needed by designers.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are a company that manufactures equipment for semiconductor/display FAB. From simple models to models with thousands of parts, various projects were designed using Onshape. There are some functions that are lacking compared to the existing installed CAD tool, but all the employees in charge of design work in our company are using it with satisfaction.

  ### 9. Cloud CAD is here!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bill C. | E, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 13, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

There's no install or maintenance and it works everywhere.

I've been using it since it's beginning and think it's evolved into the best CAD solution available.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Not enough people have switched from their old desktop systems. What's difficult is that people still want to share files with me and I'm still having to upload/download and then import files. I'm ready for this to go away.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

Just do it!, it's the best design tool out there.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Getting things done quickly. I speed all my time designing & creating and no time IT'ing.

  ### 10. Smooth cloud design

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Machinery | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 08, 2021

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Onshape is a working cloud CAD system with a lot of design features. The transition from previous CAD systems (Creo, Catia V5, SolidWorks, and Inventor) was smooth and fast. The team is updating the CAD system regularly.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

There are some features I would like to see which are not yet implemented. The biggest drawback seems to be the missing offline capability and the lag we experience while working with large assemblies.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a newly created startup, we needed a CAD system with which we can work together from our homes and which doesn't cost a lot. We were delighted to have found Onshape with its integrated CAD storage solution, the ability to work together without any hassle of checking out parts and in. It just works.

  ### 11. The best real-time collaborative mechanical CAD program out there!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Medical Devices | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 03, 2021

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

You can collaborate with your teams in real-time, in the same workspaces, with the ability to comment and review directly within the workspaces. You can also easily branch a workspace to test out a variation without overwriting existing data, even if you want to merge only those changes later.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Not much, honestly. Electrical wiring / piping features could probably be improved, but it's not something I use very often.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Real-time collaboration and tracking with our development teams. We can visualize problems / challenges and have reviews in real-time, directly in the workspaces. OnShape is cloud-based, so you can access it nearly anywhere and it doesn't take a big, powerful engineering laptop to run. I often show other engineers design details on my ipad or phone.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Machinery | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 13, 2021

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

There is little to almost no need for a CAD admin, and no concept of a vault per se. Everything is done automatically in the cloud which makes IT admin work simple.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

There is no large assembly mode, so you need to manually make documents lightweight. Only becomes a problem for us with very large models with lots of patterns and intricate detail.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Working remotely has become immensely easier. There's no software to install, VPN to configure, everything works as easy as google docs.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raghavendra V. | Senior Associate Project Manager- Banking| Digital Payments , Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 15, 2021

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I am also a dedicated user of soliworks and since the original founders built Onshape - it allowed others to to distance themselves from Solidworks' inherent legacy guidance and to offer them an excellent teacher to start again from scratch and develop on what individuals did learn across the sense.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Another of the biggest issues is a more complete Solidworks article the authors, with several key features losing, such as a welding/frame generator. At present any systemic or plumbing runs must be created or carried out manually with a personalized script.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

Make sure the Onshape skills match what you are trying to create. Which is a very good design platform, some important features might be turnoffs and make things more difficult than positive effects obviously it depends on ones wants. In the way that improve folders and reinstalling really aren't necessary, the pace is impressive and barely noticeable, making the expansion of this channel enjoyable.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One of our main issues is that we use Google to withstand our layout files' sharing and storing. These have led to problems in which files can get corrupted or slow down until files are followed up and synchronized. It takes hours for files to be shared, and even certain users have to operate regionally as well as publish when necessary in order to back up problems of cooperation. Overnight this has changed how job can be did think about and managed, thanks to the co-operation functionalities and then a built-in ERP system.

  ### 19. I love it! Never going back to SW.

  ### 29. Revolutionary Paradigm Shift in 3D Mechanical CAD

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jared F. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 24, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The flexibility and platform independence of the software
The inbuilt data and revision management, no more version control issues
Share and collaborate in real-time
Excellent customer support & service
Constantly developing feature set
A really quick tool, especially for simpler tasks
Easy to learn with excellent tutorials and feature examples
The assembly style with mate connectors is really powerful
Configurations feature is sensational
Really intuitive interface
Great platform for sharing with clients quickly and easily. They can follow along and review design ideas in real time.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Speed can be slow at times
Occasionally features are missing or are counterintuitive/dont work as expected although if you notify your account rep, they normally are very receptive and look for ways to improve the product and remove the pain point as quickly as possible.
Limited integration with OEM downstream software, Machine CAM packages etc.
No ability to work offline, on plane, away from good internet etc. Being able to "check-out" a document package would be wonderful
No being able to apply mate connectors to multiple parts at the same time
Not being able to drive configurations and patterns with logic based equations. Eg. space holes around the PCD line, max hole spacing = x, min hole spacing = y. Spacing between holes to be calculated based on line length etc.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

I really would worry too much, if you have used Solidworks, Inventor etc. you will be right at home. There are a few differences but you will pick them up really quickly and feel at home in no time at all.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Diversified CAD Teams
Better client integration
Rapid development times, even for diverse projects
Reduced learning curve for new staff

Great for collaboration and great sheet metal modeling tools.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

It can sometimes take a while to load larger assemblies

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

Make sure it covers everything you'll need or that you have correct supplemental software.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Working with a group of engineers on the same document, we can collaborate easily with OnShape. Great quality of life tool for our team.

  ### 31. Easy-to-use, continously updated, online CAD platform

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marlies M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Browser based, so it is easily accessed from the office or at home. It also means that rendering is done in the cloud, drastically lowering the hardware requirements for your system.

Onshape is also easy to use with extensive self-paced courses and webinars. Coming from other CAD software it is therefore easy to get acquainted with the new workflow and possibilities.

It is continuously updated. Every 3 weeks Onshape is updated, so that you are always working with the latest version. Since OnShape is cloud based, all your documents are automatically updated to the latest versions, so no troubles with not being able to open outdated documents.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Models can still take quite some time to update, and since you're on your browser, its easy to get distracted.

We also experience quite some models unexpectedly breaking down, which seems to be an error in the underlying code. Although Support is easy to contact and has always solved the problem, it takes time to continue your work.

Lastly, when OnShape pushes a version update, models might get broken in the update. This means features might not link to the correct vertex and you would have to go through the feature tree to correct it. Not a huge problem, but takes time.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

Tired of working with outdated document versions, not knowing which file was the last, complete one? Having a beat-down laptop which can't run hardware-heavy software like SolidWorks? Try Onshape :)

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can easily work with multiple users on the same documents, without fear of different versions. Version management is superb.

In these crazy Corona times it has also been a breeze switching from office to home use.

  ### 32. already great and I can help making it better

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Auke S. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The philosophy of being usefull and reducing the ammount of clicks is great. but even better is their support. If I get stuck or want a change, I can make a screenshot, annotate, and within a day I get advise on how to approach a problem or a workarround. And good ideas become an improvement request.
This way Onshape is on top of the practical details of how the tool is used.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The document structure and version control can get messy. And big files might get slow. Especially on WiFi. But this is solved by structuring your work, or making a version and deleting all old files.
For my design practice the second method works best since I do not need to manage production versions.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

When switching, take the time to understand how Onshape is different from what you are used to. And get ready for some, "ow shit, this is great"
And use google with the phrase "how to do xxx in OnShape". You are guaranteed to get to an old forum thread discussing this problem.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OnShape allows for more intuitive setup of models and more robust performance.
Especially the partstudio idea solved a lot of document management issues I had with SolidWorks. I can focus on my design and functions.
That OnShape is browser based is nothing then positive. Same or even better performance, and I get to show designs away from my desktop.

  ### 34. Colaboration & Support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ben B. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Onshape is the perfect tool for collaboration, there is no other CAD product that comes anywhere near it, you can discuss product design with clients in real-time as you change it and you are both looking at the same model. The other great thing is the support, you get to speak with real people and there help sort out issues and the response time is great even though I am in a different time zone. This is not what happens with my other CAD products.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

It is very hard to dislike anything about Onshape, with updates and improvements every three weeks there is always something positive happening. The only thing is I would like some of the requested improvements to happen sooner, but I get it that they need time to make sure the feature is good to go before releasing.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Onshape helps me get designs finished faster and to manufacturing faster as there is no delay in collaboration, there are no sending files out for review and then revising and then sending again, the whole process is so much faster. Also, I can have more than one person work on a project at the same time, even if they are in different locations, this makes for faster delivery as well.

  ### 35. Onshape drives my business as a mechanical designer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jason T. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I learned CAD with SolidWorks, and Onshape has been a smooth transition. I love how many tools are essentially the same, except available in a browser-based program. I've also really enjoyed the Part Studio, although it's taking me some getting used to. Versioning is really well integrated. I think the sharing features are also incredible, I can share a URL with my clients and they don't need any software other than their internet browser.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Sometimes I'll run into something that just hasn't yet been added to Onshape. These are usually quality of life features, like being able to label sketch dimensions (you can do this in SolidWorks) with helpful notes. However some things, like being able to view a grid to snap to in a drawing, seem more important (or maybe I just haven't figured out how to do it yet). I hope the development team continues to take the community's suggestion into account when doing further development. They seem to have done a great job so far.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Onshape solves my business problem of being an all-in-one CAD software. I am a freelance mechanical designer and use Onshape for virtually all aspects of my digital design process. I do a lot of 3D printing, so with this software I can easily keep all my CAD projects organized via folders and access them anywhere. As mentioned, I think the ability to send my clients a URL so they can view CAD models is huge.

  ### 36. Onshape makes CAD fun again

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ian G. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

One of the principal obstructions to solving engineering problems is the management of data. Change management is communicated through many teams. It is not enough to create a package and "throw it over the wall". Modern design is a collaborative and iterative approach as an organization, not separate teams. This emphasizes data management and communication. How can teams work together if only a small, specialized set of people can see CAD? Of course, there are methods for sharing neutral files, but the levels of abstraction bog down the process. Further, as engineers we often want to prototype ideas and see various options and configurations.

This is why Onshape shines. The data management is handled effortlessly in the background. When you need to check history, ever detail is there. When you want try ideas, you can branch and merge your designs. Onshape takes the hassle out of design, so you can do what you love: solve problems!

I want to give specific credit to the outstanding support team. Every request had been handled professionally within hours. Not every problem has an immediate solution, but the support team is redefining what is possible. Great work!

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Onshape is still building important features like Where Used and specific Sharing controls for versions and revisions. Migrating existing design can be a challenge because you need to: (1) rebuild all mates, (2) enter all metadata, and (3) create drawings from scratch. I recommend creating new design or being prepared to invest resources to convert existing design. Once you get to Onshape, you won't be sorry.

I am confident that in time the feature set will increase and eventually supersede any other CAD software on the market. Why? Because it's a cloud database ~ Onshape is a cloud database that also does CAD. The design industry doesn't understand this distinction yet, but 5 to 10 years from now, they will.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

Take time to understand the product. Get a couple licenses and try it on a small design project.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Designing in-context has been fantastic. Finally, a product that can actually delivery the promise made 25 years ago. Designers have always wanted to design with parts, holes, surfaces related to one another. You can design multi-bodies in other CAD software, but almost nobody actually designs this way because file based CAD is brittle with missing references and prone to errors. It is not 100% reliable so engineers don't use the tools available.
Onshape is different because the relationships remain in the cloud database. They won't brake or lose references. It gives designers the freedom to actually design in-context, they way we've always wanted to.

  ### 37. As an Agile Software Engineer, Onshape ticked all my checkboxes

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I love how easy it is to share my work with my team and track and version our mechanical engineering just like we do with our software. When first looking for a CAD solution, I was blown away by OnShape's ability to change one critical dimension from early in the design process and flow that change onto all the design work based on that dimension.

As a full time software engineer and part time mechanical engineer, I'm used to being able to undo very complicated workstreams without affecting the work done around it. OnShape's ability to rollback and track versions, commits, and features is invaluable to our workflow. And the fact that its all cloud based means I can share my designs not just with my team but with stakeholders, manufacturing, and others as necessary to get our products to market.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

I do wish OnShape had better support for dimensions drawings. Especially when producing things like wiring diagrams or electrical hookup diagrams, when I don't need a full eCAD but just want to show a couple quick things to my manufacturers, its a little lacking. Also, support for slightly unusual fasteners, holes, threads, etc. is somewhat to be desired. I can usually work around this in my design but I have found myself occasionally modelling a fastener or some other industry standard part so I can use it in my workflow.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

I looked at all the CAD systems available in 2018 and OnShape met all my needs and allowed me to involve my team and stakeholders for an affordable price.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mechanical Engineering of products for consumers. OnShape lets me design fast based on the critical dimensions of my products, which are usually dictated to me by my suppliers. When we switch suppliers or parts, its super easy to change the required dimensions and update the product.

  ### 38. Modern collaboration

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mehul G. | Sr. Product Development Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 25, 2018

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I like being able to share and work on components and assemblies while my colleagues around the world are also observing and collaborating (multiple users working in the same document at the same time) as well. Being able to share designs with permissions I can manage has allowed us to share concepts with multiple vendors and revoke permission from vendors not chosen.
The quick and frequent updates are also exciting and let me know this is a serious tool for professionals.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Certain features are missing that could be misunderstood as this software not being ready for professionals. However, updates every three weeks keep me hopeful they will be ready soon.

I wish this tool were available 20 years ago.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

Try it. The hardware requirements are small and the platform can be run from a phone or tablet. I have even used it with airplane wifi on an international trip!

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We no longer need to upgrade our pdm system within Solidworks.

  ### 39. Most user friendly and capable CAD program on the market today!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris R. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I'm also a devoted Solidworks user and given that Onshape was built by the original founders - it allowed them to step away from the inherent legacy support required by Solidworks and gave them an open book to start from scratch and build from what they learned along the way.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The obvious is if you have no internet connection or a slow internet connection you're screwed. There is a huge investment required for building web + desktop + mobile suites of products so it would be really nice to have the ability to download your document (part studios, drawings, assemblies, and anything else) into a tablet or mobile app (Onshape already has the mobile versions) that you can just carry around with you.

Secondly I wish they had better support for flat patterns (svg, dxf) for use on CNC machines.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

I see many users that use products like SketchUp, Fusion360, and Illustrator to do CAD-like work that OnShape just excels at. Onshape should have a switcher campaign.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I build things for my own personal use, for my mining company, and small one-off projects. I can design, look at, review, and then build something in literally a fraction of the time. Using modern day equipment I can cut, fit, and fabricate and it's right from the start.

  ### 40. Cloud Based Design Software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Romus L. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

So far I am very happy with the fact that all files are handled through the cloud allowing for very minimal computing requirements. Also based on the file structure, it is a very interesting approach to no longer have to manage actual "files" in the traditional sense. This seamless integration of how the documents are managed will allow our company to scale up on the design side of our work very easily.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

One of the main dislikes is coming from a more complete design platform of Solidworks, there are some key missing features such as a weldment/frame generator package. Currently any structural or piping runs need to be manually generated or done through the use of a custom script.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

Ensure that the abilities of Onshape suit what you try to design. Even though it is a very well though out design platform, there are some key features that could be deal breakers and cause more issues than benefits depending on your needs. The pace of updates is impressive and nearly invisible in the sense that no upgrade files and installs are required so the growth of this platform is exciting to be a part of.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One of our key issues we have is that we are relying on google drive to handle the sharing and storage of our design files. This has resulted in problems where files can become corrupted or slowed down to the how the files are backed up and synced. Sharing of files can take hours and has resulted in certain users to work locally and upload when required to backup causing collaboration issues. With the collaboration features and the built in ERP system of Onshape, this has overnight changed how work can be thought of and handled.

  ### 47. Onshape was already COVID-crisis-proof

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jop T. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I can log in to Onshape anywhere, I can share ongoing designs with colleagues and partners anywhere in the world, even walk them through my designs in real-time. When the COVID crisis started I could continue working without any hassle, from home.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The absence of a rendering module in the program. It does not have to be top class, but just basic functions that outperform making a screendump.
I hate it that I need to do rendering in another program or buy add-ons that. In my opinion, this should be included.

Also I keep missing the basic 3 planes in assemblies, it must be my Solid Works background, but I am still not completely confident in applying the correct mates. Why not include these planes?

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I develop new products for our company and our partners. so I help to create the future.

  ### 48. Austin's Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Austin C. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I like that i dont need a powerful computer to 3D model and that I have access to all my documents on any computer connected to the internet. i really love the sheet metal tools that onshape has and continued to develope.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

On very complex assemblies you start to see the limitations of cloud based cad. Documents become sluggish and load times are longer. Onshape support has been helpful in providing insights to improve our workflows. I also would like to recommend that native rendering and textures be added to onshape.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use onshape for work and personal design. It really helps to visualize a design fully and definitely is helpful to our manufacturing team. The main benefit of onshape is that we are able to easily and quickly collaborate as a team to complete projects and fully flush out a design.

  ### 49. It was a big decision but a very good one, i'm glad we have choosen Onshape for our CAD Programme.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 03, 2021

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Being able to log in to 3D Cad from any device, knowing you are always in the latest version, and working on the same model with other colleagues live.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Initial bringing work from previous CAD systems into Onshape. Having to restore the relationships, but the reward far exceeds the initial challenge.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

If changing from one CAD system to another, prepare for a bit of pain initially, but you will reap the rewards long-term.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has made our team more productive.

  ### 50. Comprehensive tool for product development

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jason C. | Key Account Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

It is very helpful for me to manage the product designing and offers me a convenient way of usage, I can operate it on my laptop and even in my mobile, by which it has become a piece of cake to assist my team. Further I feel more confident to develop new designs and shapes and easily I can manage the assemblies and drawings. Onshape provides me a secure and easy way to share the data with my team members.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

For this steep learning curve is required with it as it is a technical tool thus more training videos should be provided in this regard. Furthermore its installation and initiation was a bit tough for me may be it depended on the product knowledge.

**Recommendations to others considering Onshape:**

This is the most appropriately designed tool. It will help you a lot in bringing modification and improvement in the efficiency of product. It will prove useful and helpful in organizing your work and further helps you in boosting the work process.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This tool is very easy to configure and process various types of file format. In addition it is easily customizable and till now I have professionally organized the bill of Materials (BOMs). Onshape has allowed me to control the on sets of version and provides me effective reporting about the complete history of the editing in creation design.
