"Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure Review: Capabilities, Trade-offs, and Business Impact"

What do you like best about Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI)?

The single most helpful thing about Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure is how it simplifies the entire infrastructure stack. Before NCI, we managed separate compute, storage, and networking systems, each with its own management interface, its own upgrade cycle, and its own team. NCI brought everything together into a single, unified platform. It has fundamentally changed how we deploy and manage infrastructure.

The user interface through Prism is clean and intuitive. It provides a single pane of glass for managing all our clusters, and the dashboard gives us immediate visibility into the health of our environment. Navigating through the platform feels natural, and even team members who are not infrastructure specialists can quickly understand the status of our systems. The centralized management capability reduces complexity and offers a single platform for control, improving operational efficiency. The reporting section could offer more detail, but overall the interface does what we need it to do.

The integrations are comprehensive and valuable. NCI supports multiple hypervisors, including VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and its own built-in AHV hypervisor, giving us flexibility in how we deploy workloads. The platform integrates with major cloud providers and offers native capabilities for Kubernetes through Nutanix Kubernetes Platform. The Flow Network Security integration provides microsegmentation and virtual networking that helps us secure our environment. The ecosystem is extensive, and we have found that most of our existing tools integrate well.

Performance has been consistently excellent. The platform provides consistently high performance with data locality maximizing the benefits of hardware advances like NVMe and RDMA. We have seen significant improvements in application performance and access times to data compared to our previous infrastructure. The hyper-converged storage has improved performance and now supports high redundancy for our VMs. The platform handles our workloads without breaking a sweat, and the built-in analytics provide insights on how to optimize performance further.

Pricing is where NCI stands out compared to alternatives. Many organizations report that Nutanix offers better value than competitors, with lower cost while providing more features and functionality. The ROI is substantial, typically achieved within a reasonable timeframe through operational efficiencies, cost savings, and stable infrastructure. The cost benefits extend beyond licensing to include reduced operational overhead and simplified management. Many users note that VMware was very expensive compared to Nutanix, and they were paying less for more features and functionality.

Support and onboarding have been smooth experiences. The implementation process is straightforward, with many users reporting deployment in less than half a day for multiple nodes. Nutanix Professional Services personnel are described as excellent, making deployment seem easy. Technical support is praised for being quick and knowledgeable, resolving issues swiftly with multilingual capabilities and proactive monitoring. Some users have noted that support can be expensive, but the quality justifies the cost. The documentation is thorough, though some users suggest it could be more user-friendly for new adopters.

The AI capabilities are an emerging area. Users have expressed interest in seeing more AI features in future releases, particularly for providing operational reports and guides. What do you dislike about Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI)?

The interface, while functional, has some limitations. Some users feel the graphical user interface could be improved, and the look and feel is not as polished as it could be. There have been issues with naming conventions becoming confusing, with the product using acronyms that can be misleading and drive partners away from using AHV. The interface can sometimes suffer from performance issues, feeling slow and buggy at times, particularly when viewing larger datasets.

Performance can be inconsistent in certain scenarios. For workloads like SAP HANA, some users have noted significant performance problems, with performance degrading considerably on certain hardware configurations. There have also been issues with latency during heavy database operations, and some users report that the platform can become extremely slow when processing certain commands. The storage performance can be less than optimal, taking significant time to complete certain operations.

The onboarding process, while generally smooth, can be challenging for teams new to hyper-converged infrastructure. The learning curve is steep, and organizations may need to invest in external expertise. The platform works very well, but one user noted it took some time to get comfortable and their team still has a way to go in terms of knowledge transfer.
