What I like most about Nextcloud is its commitment to Digital Sovereignty. Unlike Big Tech, it lets you host your own data, so you keep 100% control over your privacy with end-to-end encryption.

It’s also an impressive all-in-one productivity hub. With the 2026 Hub updates, you get a seamless ecosystem that includes Nextcloud Talk for secure video and chat, Groupware with privacy-first Mail and Calendars, and Local AI—an assistant that can summarize documents without your data ever leaving your server.

For me, the real winner is the modularity. With over 200 apps, you can grow it from a simple file sync tool into a full-scale project management suite (Deck) or a collaborative office setup (Nextcloud Office). While Nextcloud is powerful, it also has some clear drawbacks compared to more “plug-and-play” corporate cloud services.

The biggest issue is the maintenance burden. Because you own the server, you effectively become the IT department. Updates can occasionally break third-party apps, which then means manual troubleshooting and, at times, some command-line knowledge.

Performance can be another pain point. Nextcloud is notoriously “heavy,” and on lower-end hardware the web interface can feel sluggish. Large file syncs and thumbnail generation can also put significant strain on the CPU, especially when you compare it to highly optimized services like Dropbox.

Sync reliability is not always great either. Users often report “conflicts” where the client can’t decide which version of a file is newer. Mobile photo auto-upload is still less reliable than Google Photos as well, and it can occasionally miss files when running in the background.
