What stands out the most is the combination of architectural consistency and efficiency in production. Features like inline deduplication, compression, and compaction run smoothly at the block level without impacting application latency, making capacity planning much more predictable across our AFF and FAS tiers. Furthermore, leveraging SnapMirror for asynchronous and synchronous replication combined with FlexClone for instant, space-efficient testing environments has significantly streamlined our daily operations and disaster recovery workflows. While ONTAP is rock solid, licensing costs for add-on features and support renewals can get pretty steep, specially when scaling up capacity. System Manager UI has definitely improved over time, but for certain granular tasks or deep troubleshooting, you still have to drop into CLI—the GUI can sometimes feel a bit clunky or missing options. Also, firmware/ONTAP major version upgrades require very meticulous planning to avoid edge-case bugs, and the initial learning curve for junior admins managing SVMs and network LIFs is pretty steep.
