**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Steep Learning Curve	- especially those transitioning from AutoCAD, find the interface and workflow less intuitive and the commands to be more complex or "clunky" for simple tasks.

It can natively read and write a vast number of file formats, including DWG, point clouds, reality meshes, and GIS data (like Esri File Geodatabase), often without requiring a lossy conversion. It can even open a DWG file without translating it, which is unique.

What I really like about artificial intelligence and chat AI is how quickly it can provide useful information and help solve problems. It is available anytime and can explain complex topics in a simple way. It also helps with writing, learning new things, and improving productivity. I appreciate how interactive it feels, almost like having a knowledgeable assistant ready to help whenever I need it.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

One thing I don’t like about artificial intelligence is that it is not always perfectly accurate and sometimes gives information that needs to be double-checked. It also cannot fully understand human emotions or personal situations like a real person can. Because of that, conversations can sometimes feel less natural, and you still need human judgment when using AI tools.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

What I like best about MicroStation: the precision + control for complex CAD work.

It handles massive civil, infrastructure, and plant models without choking, and you get granular control over levels, reference files, and DGN workflows that AutoCAD makes clunky. If you’re doing highways, utilities, or large-scale engineering, it just feels built for that level of detail.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

What I dislike: the learning curve and UI.

It’s powerful but not intuitive. Menus, tool names, and workflows feel dated compared to modern CAD tools, so it takes longer to get productive if you’re new. Plus file sharing can be a pain if collaborators are on AutoCAD.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

What problems MicroStation solves:

Handling massive, complex infrastructure models  
   Roads, bridges, utilities, plants - stuff with millions of elements. It stays stable where lighter CAD tools lag or crash.

Multi-discipline coordination  
   Handles reference files and levels really well, so civil, structural, electrical, and MEP teams can work on the same project without overwriting each other.

Standards and compliance for large projects  
   Built for government and DOT workflows. It enforces naming conventions, levels, and file formats out of the box, which cuts rework on public contracts.

How that benefits me:  
You get fewer crashes on heavy files, faster coordination without file bloat, and less back-and-forth fixing standards when submitting to clients like DOTs. Basically less time fighting the software, more time doing actual design.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

What I like best about MicroStation is how powerful and precise it is for complex engineering projects. Once you get comfortable with it, it gives you a huge amount of control over detailed design work, especially on large-scale infrastructure and MEP projects. I also like how well it handles references and large drawing files without slowing everything down too much.

Another big advantage is the flexibility — there are usually multiple ways to achieve the same result, which makes it easier to adapt workflows to different project requirements. It definitely has a learning curve, but for technical drafting and coordination, it’s a very capable platform.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

One thing I dislike about MicroStation is that the interface can feel outdated and less intuitive compared to some other CAD platforms. A lot of the tools are powerful, but they’re not always easy to find or learn, especially for newer users.

It can also be quite time-consuming to customise settings, workspaces, and shortcuts to suit the way you work. Another frustration is that some workflows feel more complicated than they need to be, particularly when moving between different project standards or collaborating with teams using other software.

Once you know it well it’s very capable, but the learning curve is definitely steeper than it probably needs to be.

MicroStation helps solve a lot of the coordination and accuracy challenges that come with complex engineering and construction projects. It allows detailed designs, layouts, and modifications to be produced with a high level of precision, which reduces errors and helps keep projects compliant with technical standards.

For me, the biggest benefit is being able to work efficiently across large and information-heavy drawings without constantly running into performance issues. It also improves collaboration between different disciplines because everyone can reference and coordinate from the same design information. I use MicroStation for a mix of 2D drafting and 3D modeling within the civil engineering space, and I like its ability to handle various file formats like DGN and DWG seamlessly. MicroStation solves the issue of software instability with large infrastructure projects; I can work with massive 3D models and point clouds without lagging or crashing. What I like most is MicroStation's stability when handling extremely large datasets, which is crucial for long-term projects. The new AI-powered tools like the Bentley Copilot and Python Assistant make it easier to automate repetitive tasks, lowering the time-to-productivity for new team members. Bentley Copilot is especially helpful as it provides step-by-step guidance, making the onboarding process faster. I find the initial setup of MicroStation surprisingly straightforward due to the new Configuration Creator, which simplifies workspace setups and office standards.

The biggest hurdle is the steep learning curve, especially for those coming from an AutoCAD background. The terminology and the 'command-first' vs 'element-first' logic are very different. While the new AI Copilot helps, the software still requires significant training time before a new user becomes truly productive.

I appreciate MicroStation's versatility and flexibility to work with other software, which enhances its usability for various architectural and urban projects. It combines visual and technical proficiency effectively, making the outcomes reliable and visually correct for presentations.

It is unfortunately a software dictated by tradition. Only certain practices in certain countries use it. The issue is that Autodesk and Revit are taking over for this field, so I don't know how long MicroStation will last. Some clients don't want it because it's less flexible than Autodesk tools. Some countries you don't even hear about it and in some, it's the only thing that runs. In a global economy with architecture being built across borders and internationally, we need to ensure cross operations between teams in different countries. Also, it takes time to learn it.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I found MicroStation quite reliable when working across teams. It holds up well and keeps things consistent even when multiple people are involved and you're dealing with shared information. It's very important in multidisciplinary environments. I also love how stable it is when handling larger and more complex drawings, making day-to-day work smoother. The initial setup was pretty straightforward as well, and while there's a bit of a learning curve, it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. All these points make me highly recommend it, rating it between eight and a half to nine.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

I think that could be improved is when you have to learn about a certain software and there's not a lot of resources available. So I'd say that is one aspect that would need some improvement.

There are also occasional difficulties when exchanging data with non-Bentley Systems software, which may disrupt workflows slightly.

Additionally, the cost of licensing can be a barrier for smaller teams or individual users. Improving integration, simplifying the interface, and offering more guided onboarding resources would make the software more approachable and efficient overall.

Previously, coordinating detailed drawings across disciplines was challenging, especially when dealing with large files that slowed down performance and caused inconsistencies.

Using MicroStation, I can now work with complex models more efficiently and maintain higher accuracy throughout the design process. Its ability to handle large datasets improves coordination and reduces the likelihood of errors. Integration with tools like AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit also helps maintain smoother collaboration.

As a result, project delivery is faster, revisions are easier to manage, and overall workflow productivity has improved significantly.

Integration with other softwares and file size is good with Microstation also Bentley's support always available if there is any complexity they help to provide resolutions . I personally recommend it for Steel structure models and Drawings as it handle them pretty good.

UI need to be improved as it seems very complex for beginners. It's also very difficult to learn because the features they provided doesn't work like other CAD /BIM softwares

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Good and simplify work of converting 2D layouts to 3D in very less time. and adding a camera at an angle and drawing a path gives a very useful simulation walk through for easy class detection errors. overall a good tool where all files can be opened

Tools like PDF conversion don’t give me much clarity in the files, and sometimes the software shows errors, closes unexpectedly, and makes me reopen all the files again. Other than that, everything is fine.

**Recommendations to others considering MicroStation:**

Good software to use when we need yo handle up with different  extensions  of file formats from supplier s.  Easy to load and export with No data loss and positional changes

Solution which we can defined are 2D concept layout which can be easily converted to 3D in less time. By importing any other formatted file. Hels us to have a time saving. And also gives flow simulation.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I use MicroStation mainly for my day-to-day work as a drainage designer. I find it very useful for producing drainage layouts, preparing drawings, and adjusting chamber levels. The referencing system really stands out for me because it allows me to reference multiple models and work with them. This helps me avoid clashes early, especially in scenarios like checking if the drainage pipe conflicts with the road profile. It also streamlines coordination with other disciplines like highways and utilities, eliminating the need to match separate drawings later.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

One issue I have faced is when adjusting the drainage levels across multiple reference models. Because the elements were coordinated across different reference, the process wasn’t as smooth as it could be. It would be helpful if all the drainage elements that are not updated in the model could be automatically updated and not manually. To be honest it wasn’t that easy, it’s not just installation and use straight away. As for new users, it's a bit challenging to get familiar with, so with the guidance, it's faster.

I use MicroStation to avoid coordination issues by referencing models from different disciplines, preventing clashes in drainage designs and aligning drawings with project standards.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I mostly use MicroStation for CAD designs. MicroStation has integrated apps which allow easy sending, downloading, and communicating information. I appreciate how ProjectWise and MicroStation together simplify our processes, allowing direct opening and editing of CAD drawings. With ProjectWise, we can open drawings in MicroStation as live documents, and edit them seamlessly, saving time as it automatically uploads the most recent file without extra manual work. It is also client-approved and the initial setup was very easy.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Most of the things are quite interesting as well as linked and well communicated. The one thing that could improve which ties all of it is the connectivity speed. As sometimes it lags a lot and takes time to do simple tasks. MicroStation has lots of features that get introduced but most of them are not quite clear on the use. So a better communication on how best we can integrate them in our projects would be good.

Very powerful software that allows lots of add on packages such as Geopak & Inroads. UI is easy to use and navigate. Application performance scales with stronger hardware. ROI is unparallel as our organization seems to use this software extensively. Support is competent & readily available and they are improving with new AI features regularly.

There can be a relatively steep learning curve, especially for those coming from more widely used applications such as Civil 3D. There are lots of features to use, but that can also create some difficulty for new users.

One thing I don’t really like about MicroStation is that the interface can feel a bit complicated, especially for someone who is new to it. It takes quite a bit of time to learn where everything is and how the workflows are set up. Sometimes even simple tasks can require several steps compared to other CAD software.

Another issue is that collaboration with people using other platforms can be a bit tricky. File compatibility and converting between formats doesn’t always work as smoothly as you’d hope. **What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I find that layers have been particularly helpful in separating out lighting, furniture, flooring, etc. Layers keep the drawing clean, but all in one spot, so I can easily turn the layer off or on depending on which category I'm needing to show. It can get overwhelming with every layer turned on, so being able to isolate a specific piece of the project is nice. I also like using blocks for quickly placing furniture to navigate traffic patterns throughout the home. Blocks are great for quickly pulling in when needing to represent a potential furniture layout. This saves me time so I'm not having to draw each piece from scratch. The initial setup of MicroStation was easy, with no challenges.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

Trying to attach Xrefs has always been a struggle as they don't import as easily as I'd like. I think the attachment process could be more user-friendly.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MicroStation helps me show 3D versions of design concepts to clients who struggle to visualize ideas. I find layers keep drawings clean, allowing easy isolation of project parts, and blocks save time by quickly adding furniture layouts.

I really like the simple and easy-to-remember shortcuts, which are usually just two numbers compared to several letters in other software. It may sound like a small thing, but it saves hours in the long run. I also appreciate the very clean and precise results it provides. The setup was super easy, and the learning curve was immediate—I learned the software in just a couple of days.

3D MicroStation never quite gets good reviews from architects. But improving the compatibility with Revit and Rhino would definitely improve reviews.

I also like how stable and flexible MicroStation is when handling large complex bridge models. It works well with references and discipline coordination files, which makes managing updates and design changes much smoother throughout the project.

One area that could be improved is usability, as some workflows are not as intuitive and can take time for new users to become comfortable with. Better onboarding and training is something especially have a lot on YouTube.

I like MicroStation because it's more adapted to new design trends than AutoCAD and offers wider functionality. It's also good that it has a direct contact to BIM models, which helps me solve small and special tasks with models that aren't part of the standard Bentley Cell Library.

I would say that the ribbon is a little confusing. You need to look in many places on a screen at the same time. The ribbon is very wide and big. I would be happy if the access to MicroStation API was wider. I am used to creating custom commands in Python, C# or AI, but Bentley often refuses to give my commands access to the model inside MicroStation. It was a little complicated at the start, but after 2 weeks of permanent work, it became easier.

I think the fact that we can draw 3D and incorporate it with 2D drawings is very useful. Creating 3D objects and then incorporating them into drawings saves time and increases efficiency. We can also export DGN to DWG and import DWG to DGN, which is very useful. I think reference attachment is also useful. I got training in MicroStation, so the initial setup was super easy.

When exporting DGN to DWG, it takes too long, and it creates a lot of unnecessary files. I think it could be nice if it creates only one drawing. I think importing and exporting DWG could be enhanced and made more efficient.

I appreciate the ability to create custom shortcuts using manual 'key-ins' for initiating complex commands without searching through menus. The integration of Google's photorealistic 3D tiles allows placing designs within a high-resolution 3D mesh of the actual project site, providing clients with immediate real-world context. Having to use MicroStation as separate tool to our Siemens NX mechanical CAD environment. There no out-of-the-box integration with Teamcenter our enterprise PLM environment

Ability to model and visualize large complex sites with ease and excellent performance. MicroStation models  also frequently include scanned plant data.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I use MicroStation for creating and editing detailed engineering drawings, design review, and producing accurate CAD models. It gives me a stable, precise CAD environment for large, detailed engineering drawings, making design reviews much easier. I like that it's stable, handles big files well, and has excellent reference management. The initial setup was easy, although configuration takes more effort.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

Drawing in MicroStation feels faster because of how its commands are designed to work. If you know your way around MicroStation and can move through it fast, you can draw more efficiently than in AutoCAD.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

MicroStation needs general optimization to make drawing and drafting commands smoother and more responsive. The Esc key should be used properly to unselect items or cancel an active command.

**What problems is MicroStation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I really enjoy that right-clicking lets me undo a step within a command. I also like that commands such as Scale and Rotate give you the option to create a copy of the selection. That way, I can rotate an object without having to copy and paste it first, and then repeat the process again before doing the next rotation.

**What do you like best about MicroStation?**

I really like MicroStation's handling capacity. It's crucial for dealing with massive complex infrastructure projects like the one I'm working on, Snowy 2.0. The robustness of the 3D modeling is impressive, delivering very high quality. Its interoperability is also a top feature, making it very user-friendly and simple for my needs. It enhances drafts and ensures that the application is straightforward for team use and project success.

**What do you dislike about MicroStation?**

What doesn't work well is it's a little bit inconsistent towards the latest standards. For me, it's Australian standards, and sometimes the files are getting outdated. It's not clear on the training that it is supposed to have.

MicroStation handles and stabilizes large files particularly in hydro power plant projects involving electrical and civil interfaces, and it debugs clashes, enhancing my project workflow.
