What do you like best about Matomo (Formerly Piwik)?

We have been using this platform for over a decade and actually started back when it was still called Piwik. It is definitely one of the best tools for anyone who cares about data ownership and privacy. We spent many years hosting it ourselves on our own servers which gave us total control over the setup. Recently we switched to the cloud based version and it has been great because it takes away all the technical maintenance and server management. The tracking is very accurate and we love that there is no data sampling so we always see the real numbers.

The UI is excellent and honestly much better and more intuitive than Google Analytics. We also found that the integration is very nice even with Angular since it supports Google Tag Manager. The performance is very solid and everything loads quickly. We only had to use the support team one time and the experience was fine because they were helpful and resolved our question. It is a very powerful alternative to other mainstream analytics and the transition from self hosted to cloud was actually very smooth. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Matomo (Formerly Piwik)?

The biggest downside for us has been the pricing structure on the cloud version. It feels quite expensive compared to other options especially when you are a smaller business. Another major frustration is that on the specific package we are using you can only add 3 websites. This limit feels very restrictive and it would be much better if there was more flexibility to add a few more sites without having to jump to a much higher price tier. What problems is Matomo (Formerly Piwik) solving and how is that benefiting you?

Matomo solves the problem of needing deep analytics while keeping full control of our data. Since we have been with them since the Piwik days we have a huge amount of historical data that is very valuable to our business. The benefit of switching to the cloud is that we no longer have to worry about security patches or server uptime ourselves. It gives us all the advanced features like heatmaps and goal tracking in a reliable environment.
