Primary Value and User Solutions: iTerm2 addresses the limitations of the default macOS Terminal by offering a feature-rich environment that enhances productivity and user experience. Its advanced functionalities, such as split panes and hotkey access, streamline multitasking and quick terminal access. Features like instant replay and paste history prevent data loss and reduce repetitive tasks. The high degree of customization ensures that users can create a terminal setup that aligns with their specific workflow requirements. By integrating these capabilities, iTerm2 solves common challenges faced by command-line users, making it an invaluable tool for those seeking a more efficient and personalized terminal experience.

## iTerm2 Reviews
  ### 1. Seamless macOS Integration and Endless Customization

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric K. | VP, Engineering, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2026

**What do you like best about iTerm2?**

The visor mode and the tmux style window splitting are essential to my workflow. It's always there, but only when I want it to be. It also integrates seamlessly into macos and feels like a native tool. I also like the endless customization and different profiles to switch between if I need to.

**What do you dislike about iTerm2?**

I think sometimes it has maybe too many bells and whistles that it can get confusing to configure, especially on a new machine. It's gotten better at setting portability though so I can thankfully just copy those over. But it's even little stuff like enabling natural scrolling or using alt keys to cursor over words.

**What problems is iTerm2 solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm in the terminal all day, and iTerm 2 really balances UI with CLI - I don't have to use a bunch of clunky tools to emulate the functionality because it's all built in as first-class features of the tool.

  ### 2. Still a valid option in 2024

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mario T. | Project Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 10, 2024

**What do you like best about iTerm2?**

Yes, iTerms2 is still a valid option, there are other sophisticated terminal apps such as Warp or Hyper, but iTerm2 is still one of the most used terminals for developers.

I like it a lot because I can switch profiles per development environment: I can have a profile with my Staging settings, or my prod SSH access and keys.

One feature I love is Panes: It will give the ability to have the terminal split into different windows in the same tab, giving you all the visibility you need while doing several tasks in parallel, and about panes and tabs you can do a full search on all your open tabs, so you can get what you need right from a single result instead of jumping between tabs.

**What do you dislike about iTerm2?**

iTerm2 can be customized with superpowers, but I don't like those features everyone uses are not just default on a fresh install.

An experienced developer can make a great iTerm2, but not so experienced might not get a lot of value from a vanilla install. It is not built for the average user.

You can install custom fonts with nice icons, ohmyz to have extra powers, you can use Amazon Q to give you CLI AI and autocomplete features and add custom shortcuts, but all of that at this point on the product roadmap should already be part of its core.
So, the thing I don't like much about iTerm2 is configuring so many things all over again.

Recommendation: save and export your profile.

**What problems is iTerm2 solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Velocity and visibility are the problems iTerm2 solves best. By having split panes and different tabs acting together and having the ability to easily change profiles you will be able to control all tasks fast. Using a secondary screen only to watch logs, running parallel unit tests, etc, that's a dev dream.

  ### 3. Goood

**What do you like best about iTerm2?**

it has a nice mouse support and easy to scroll the content on the terminal
Great documentation and tons of helpful articles to get the most out of it

**What do you dislike about iTerm2?**

I didn't find anything in particular to dislike only thing it can improve is to add out of the box support for major development tools like Github, Maven and java shortcuts , so that user's don't have to install themself

**What problems is iTerm2 solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Increasing the developers efficiency

  ### 5. Alternative of Terminal for MacOS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dhananjay P. | Python Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 26, 2022

**What do you like best about iTerm2?**

UI/UX of iTerm2 is the best among all terminals which are available in mac, iTerm supports modules/packages, which means you can install the packages for productivity.

**What do you dislike about iTerm2?**

There is nothing to dislike, but whenever I open an item2 first time, it opens two windows every time, I've gone through all settings, also whenever I open it from a specific location it opens two windows too.

**Recommendations to others considering iTerm2:**

People who are using mac's terminal, who are in the tech field or not, but once try out the iTerm2.

**What problems is iTerm2 solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I've installed "oh my gosh" for the theme, so it helps me recognize and visualize the command mode easily, also I've installed auto-complete, which allow me to write command fast and efficiently.

  ### 7. terminal that improves productivity

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2021

**What do you like best about iTerm2?**

We can split the terminal horizontally and vertically which improves productivity. I like the paste history feature, search history with regex, on tab autocompletion, setting badge on the top right corner of the terminal. short cut key to switch profile and much more.

**What do you dislike about iTerm2?**

Some of the shortcuts are tied with ESC key example, for pasting the last argument of the previous command I had to use ESC + dot. I should have by default tied up with the option key. Apart from that, I don't have any complaints.

**Recommendations to others considering iTerm2:**

got for it. It is awesome.

**What problems is iTerm2 solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use it for development. starting and stopping services. Setting cron. commenting changes to the version control system and pushing the changes to the bitbucket. I use the split terminal feature a lot. It improved my productivity a lot.

Start service in one of the split, check the logs in another split, edit in yet another split.

  ### 8. The best Terminal Application for MacOS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cody L. | SSoftware Development Engineer in Test, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 15, 2021

**What do you like best about iTerm2?**

The flexibility of iTerm2's interface is excellent; being able to open multiple tabs as well as split view terminals makes running numerous tasks a breeze!

**What do you dislike about iTerm2?**

I will say that configuration and customization of iTerm2 can be a time-consuming process, but once you get it the way you want it, you're smooth sailing!

**What problems is iTerm2 solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This is the only terminal application I use to run tasks like:
- running automated tests
- performing actions within Git
- managing OS with administrative commands

All of these actions are conveniently in one place, and if I need to re-run specific commands often, I can leave tabs open and re-run them as needed.

It is a bit difficult to understand where to go, when just starting out, and you almost certainly will need a guide for the first few things.

iTerm2 is much more customizable when compared to the integrated MacOS terminal and is very easy and convenient to use. It makes me more efficient and makes my work faster by providing ways to program the entire experience.
