What do you like best about IDrive Online and SaaS Backup, Object Storage e2?

Whole-account encryption (when configured at account creation) was my primary deciding factor in choosing iDrive over its competitors. My second deciding factor was iDrive’s ability to do full-disk backups and/or file-and-folder backups.

The value is especially good, too. I received 75% off my first year after searching the web for a discount code, and I’m also being offered a refund on that first year simply for providing this review. Is this a paid review or not, since I’m getting reimbursed for my year’s usage? IDK—you decide. Take my review with a grain of salt if you must.

For the price, the storage space is competitive, and if you look at the additional storage included for cloud backups (if you buy 5TB, you get an additional 5TB of cloud drive storage), it feels market-leading. It’s encrypted as well, and it doesn’t count against your core allocation of drive space for file/folder and full-disk backups. I’m still getting my head around how to use the two buckets of storage most effectively, but I’m thrilled to have all the space—even if I were paying the full $99 annually. What do you dislike about IDrive Online and SaaS Backup, Object Storage e2?

I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around the Scheduled Backup tab in iDrive. The backup set names really need clearer explanations. I struggled to tell what “IDMachineBkset” versus “Default BackupSet_User” were actually meant for. It took me an embarrassing couple of days to realize that “IDMachineBkSet” is for whole-device backups, while the “Default BackupSet_User” schedule is for file/folder backups (and not for cloud drive storage, which seems to be a separate bucket of data you have to manage).

Another confusing point is that you can run an entire machine backup immediately from the schedule tab, but doing so clears out your scheduled task. After the manual backup finishes, you have to go back in and set the schedule up again.

I also don’t like that there’s no option to cap my storage usage. I received an email this morning telling me I either need to pay $0.25/GB per month in overages, delete the files immediately and remove them from the backup sets, or upgrade to a new tier. I’d much rather be able to set a hard cap so that once I hit it, new files simply aren’t backed up and I get an error email or an in-app message. As it is, I’m risking overage charges if I don’t check my email quickly enough. My accidental 364GB overage would have cost me $91 if I hadn’t caught it right away, and while I do value my current backups, I now feel like I have to stay constantly vigilant to avoid surprise overages. To improve the user experience, iDrive could consider providing clearer explanations for backup set names and offering a feature to cap storage usage to prevent unexpected overage charges. What problems is IDrive Online and SaaS Backup, Object Storage e2 solving and how is that benefiting you?

iDrive lets me maintain and manage a local HDD backup, a cloud-based full-drive backup, and centralized cloud storage for the files and folders I use most. I can access everything from my PC or my phone, with encryption I trust. It gives me the peace of mind I’ve been looking for in case of data loss, corruption, theft, fire, flood, etc., and the local backup option means I can still restore my data if the cloud backup is ever compromised. It also backs up my mobile contacts, calendar, photos, and videos, and automatically uploads camera photos, so I no longer need to use iCloud or remember to sync my phone to my PC on a regular basis.
