Easy to intergrate with other products, we use a cloud storage company which has a supported connection and works great. The support we get through using the VM backup has been excellent every time. Really intelligent staff who are patient when you need help to get things moving again. Lastly, the consistency of the backups is a great bonus, we rarely have issues and most times it isn't an issue with the software, more a problem with the machine the software is on. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** One gripe I have with the VM backup is I wish the control panel portal were a little easier to navigate. Easy to install, configure, backup and maintain **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Lloyd R. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** July 09, 2023 **What do you like best about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** Very easy to use and support and can monitor all backup jobs in the cloud console and start again if the last backup job fails. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** The simplicity of the product has its positives and negatives. An example of a negative is we can't schedule offsite backups without first performing a local backup. That may initially seem illogical, but offsite backups sometimes fail, so it would be great to schedule additional offsite backups to reduce the chances of running those manually the next day. Also, offsite backup jobs regularly fail and don't resume/retry. Our previous solution could resume an offsite backup even if the Internet connection was lost for hours/days. It just continued where it left off, which is helpful with sizeable offsite backups. Lastly, we have concerns about the reliability of the offsite server in general, especially when 50+ servers are backed up to the same offsite server. Support checked the logs when we submitted a ticket and confirmed underlying network issues, but all other systems were working correctly on the same networks. So, we excluded the offsite backup server by directly connecting to the same SMB shares that the offsite server was configured to use, and the backups were then reliable. We could do this because our data centres are connected together with layer 2 (Ethernet) 10Gbps fibre. **What problems is Hornetsecurity VM Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?** Easily backup all Hyper-V guest servers (Virtual Machines) **Official Response from Angelica Micallef Trigona:** > Thanks ever so for your comprehensive review! You can, for example, set up a backup to Wasabi or AWS storage, and an additional backup to a separate MSP-managed colo hypervisor with HornetSecurity Offsite Backup running on it--so that if needed, you can spin up the most recent backup of a server on your own MSP hypervisor for recovery or testing purposes. I also appreciate the Hornet Backup support team--they are easy to contact and always helpful. They are a model for how this sort of thing should be done. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** The downside is the HornetSecurity portal got a bit more difficult to use after the product transitioned from being Altaro to Hornet Security VM Backup. Some of the UI and navigation choices needed to get to the HornetSecurity Backup console are non-intuitive. But the VM Backup interface itself is clear and works well. Additionally there are rare deduplication issues that require a reseeding of the backup, but in general the platform has been very stable in my seven years of working with it. **What problems is Hornetsecurity VM Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?** This solves my need to have a cost-effective cloud backup solution that doesn't require a lot of time to maintain the health of. It also delivers this service securely and with any/all CIS encryption requirements. Between the pricing per VM and the cost of the offsite storage I use with Wasabi, there is plenty of room to provide an affordable solution to customers and still make a healthy profit margin. There have been occassions where the VM doesn't boot up for a variety of reasons. I then look to my backups to resolve this issue. However Hornet has been backing up the VM in a non bootable state. And this is only brought to light when the VM needs a reboot. It has rescued clients several times from data loss or server failures due to data corruption or failed Microsoft updates. The combination of compression and deduplication means restoring from a local backup is extremely quick and the ability to do an offsite backup (in my case to Wasabi) means there is protection even from total disaster situations. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** The only complaint I have as an MSP is the inability to segment the Cloud Management portal and share management control with clients. **What problems is Hornetsecurity VM Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?** VM Backup, in conjuction with off site storage is a great foundation for the data side of a disaster recovery plan. The recovery options are excellent and the compression ratios are very good. The instant chat support is awesome whenever you do need help. **What do you dislike about Hornetsecurity VM Backup?** When using the CMC is bit more complicated and server do occasionally stop communicating with the platform for no reason. This also includes their other backup products which is helpful. Reduces storage requirements due to highly compressed and single instancing backup storage. However, it is priced very well and is a product and service that i can explain and provide to my customers.
