What do you like best about FME Platform?

Using the FME you can automate extract-transform-load workflows of any complexity. It almost doesn't matter what is the source and destination format is - FME can handle them all. You can easily load your shapefiles into Microsoft SQL Server database, or transform AutoCAD drawings to the common GIS format. What's even more important, it's not to be necessary one-to-one conversion tasks where you're converting one set of the data to another. During the conversion you might transform your data as you need - just connect the data source to the chain of the transformers, and save the result in the required format. You can do any type of transformation, like to create buffer zones, intersections, or anything else. I would say, that the FME handles raster and vector data with equal success. What do you dislike about FME Platform?

Sometimes you might feel, that the set of the available transformers is limited in comparison to the tools available in the conventional GIS systems such as ArcGIS. So you might not be able to accomplish some advanced GIS tasks like image classification, which is common in remote sensing. But it's not important for most of the users. What problems is FME Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?

I use the FME to automate almost all the data processing tasks, where I'm too lazy to use Python or ArcGIS. You could easily process enormous volumes of the data using the software. One of my tasks was to calculate the building heights for the City of Minneapolis, so I used about 100 GB of the LiDAR data, and unlike the other tools, like ENVI LiDAR, FME processed that dataset with ease.
