There is only a click away from receiving a download of pertinent information to an excel or pdf. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** I am content with its access and organization. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** I work on exams and compile them all for our records. My most significant benefit is how efficient it is at separating the files and its ease. ### 2. That is a good way for students to identify any device issues before the test date. The different question-type features are excellent. I like that when I call now, I get a real person that can help me troubleshoot issues. This has improved signifigantly over the past 2 years. Students report that the live chart function is very helpful. The statistical information like point by serial & KR are great. The test planning label portion is really helpful for programs that have to keep up with metrics relating to specific labels. Example: in nursing we have blooms, NCLEX, and Nursing Process. We can easilly print that information for a survey. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** I don't like that tests were uploaded via word document in previous years now look weird. I was told by Examsoft support that it occurred because of a formatting issue that didn't work with the examsoft updates. So, I will be inputting new test information and that stinks if you have several 50 item multiple-choice exams. I'm not too fond of the live chat support and was given incorrect information in the past. Although, the students say they love this feature. **Recommendations to others considering ExamSoft:** If you are using lab (college) computers, please be mindful that your IT department must coordinate to ensure that they always get the updates and that "deep freeze" or other programs aren't blocking the Examplify Application. Otherwise, you will administer an exam, and none of them will allow downloads. This has happened two times in my cohorts. The solution that our program came up with is requiring students to have their own devices and manage the updates as Examsoft requires them. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** Examsoft makes the test plan straight forward and easy to keep up with. I found that Examsoft is beneficial for making sure students are ready for new lab content. When creating exams it is fairly straightforward on how to set up traditional exams and observational exams. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** There are a few issues I have with the transferability of questions/exams year to year and question format. 1) Depending on how you organize your questions ( I do so by content area), it is not easily possible to choose questions to import into a new exam from how the questions are set up. For example, unless you have recorded the id of the question, you have to click over all the questions to see the stem to choose the question. If you want to create a question bank you will have to take an extra step to export it into an excel file, even then it is not user-friendly. For creating questions, I would like the ability to create a reusble word/answer bank for FIB questions which is not possible unless you duplicate a question. For my questions which often have 10+ options, this becomes tedious. For performance-based exams that have multiple graders, there is not a way for the course director to collate the exam takers scores and rubrics in a meaningful way to review with the students. Lastly, too many clicks to actually log on. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** Examsoft is very good for a lock-down solution for exams. it allows you to randomize questions/answers. On the grading and reporting side, it is easy for me to grade exams with FIB questions quickly with 100 students. The reporting allows you to visualize the metrics of your exams and break down each question. I have also been able to show students visualizations of their performance. ### 4. ExamSoft provides teachers a platform to store and create a vast testing database for their courses to be used or modified year after year. The variety of questions that you can add to the platform and attachments that can be included within a question is a nice feature. You can share with students sections of a reading, a passage to read and respond to as well as other attachments that are accessible during a test or exam. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** Some of the formatting standards that ExamSoft has preset in the system platform are difficult to navigate. For example, creating the Fill In the Blank question is one way to add matching sections to a test or exam. Fill In The Blank Questions take some skill, patience, and creativity to create in the platform, and some slight modifications in the question standards set might make this feature easier to use. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** l don't think that l have solved any significant problems with ExamSoft recently. Our original program adoption certainly brought about substantial changes in how we administer tests and exams. Some results from adopting ExamSoft have included a Greener School--no photocopying of numerous exams, score sheets, attachments, and other papers. We have saved money and costs with photocopying needs and test prep resources such as Scantron score sheets, essay booklets, etc. The ease of having students access their materials on their own devices saves some time and energy. ### 5. Making global changes on exams is a breeze as well as copying exams! The testing environment in our LMS requires internet access and ExamSoft is able to test without it. They also offer excellent training sessions before launching. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** There is a lot of upfront loading and the data is only rich if questions are tagged. Questions with images do not copy and have to be modified manually. They offer question formatting but the turnaround is slow. They tend to be slow when responding to issues. **Recommendations to others considering ExamSoft:** Encourage faculty to tag questions and decide upfront how to copy exams from semester to semester so you can track longitudinal data. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** ExamSoft has resolved our testing security as well as the internet connectivity issues we have had in the past. They also allow for more diverse question styles that align with NexGen-style questions. When we are performing exam reviews, ExamSoft allows us to review and modify responses much easier. Our data is more accurate now than ever before. ### 6. The ease of performing an item analysis is one of the best features of ExamSoft...Changing an answer and having the grades automatically changed is a gamechanger. Additionally, with the hit of one button "Push Grades", my student's grades will automatically populate into the course and column I choose within whatever LMS (i.e., Blackboard, Canvas etc.) I'm using. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** I am not a big fan of ExamNow. I've used it a couple of times and it wasn't anything spectacular. I can get the same results with great music and student participation with Kahoot. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are no longer having to use scantrons or another type of assessment builder that is not as "user friendly" as ExamSoft. Again, the item analysis while using ExamSoft is a game changer! ### 8. It's great for lazy teachers! It has also helped my faculty rethink how to write critical thinking questions on assessments. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** I think the product is glitchy for users on the iPad. I've had several issues where students couldn't upload tests, and we had to delete the app and reinstall it. **Recommendations to others considering ExamSoft:** Because there are so many options as a creator, ExamSoft is not the most user-friendly product. However, learning the tools will make your job simpler and more impactful. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** ExamSoft has made our school virtually paperless. Also, it has decreased the amount--and interest--in student cheating. It is very nice that I do not have to walk around to make sure my students' arent cheating consistently. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** I don't particularly appreciate that I cannot exclude the correct answers when I release the results to my students but still gives them access to the answer choices. If I chose not to show them the answers, it STILL shows them the correct answer instead of researching and discussing it with the instructor first. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am still trying to figure out an easier way to upload questions. Having to use the .CSV format is very difficult. It would be nice if I could just import it directly from word. ### 10. New features like the blueprint view for designing exams that fairly cover all of your lectures are also very useful. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** I dislike what I can only describe as a severe lack of UI know-how. It seems that every semester my colleagues and I discover a new bug or issue that makes absolutely no rational sense. For example, the current best practice for storing questions from semester to semester is to create a new course called "question bank" that you copy all of last semester's questions into to preserve them over time (otherwise, they disappear when you archive the course). That would be fine, except that when you search for questions, you have to MANUALLY select that you want to search within the question bank course. Another problem we frequently have with the Examplify application is that the log-in process is needlessly confusing and often fails (again, for UI reasons). These examples are just some of many other UI issues with this software that a competent design team could quickly and easily fix. It's challenging to understand how a company of this scale and importance can make such obvious mistakes. Seemingly the only answer is that they prioritized form over function and don't care enough to fix it. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** In my class, Exam Soft and the companion app Examplify allow us to give exams and other assessments in the classroom without having to grade them manually. This allows me to administer exams and quizzes in the classroom (mostly) seamlessly, even when I have more than 200 students. ### 11. I also am very fond of its reporting system. I can pull up longitudinal reports, single assessment reports, line item or question analysis, with just the touch of a single button. It is very easy and helps a lot with accreditation. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** There really isn't much I dislike. I do wish we could delete categories once they are created. Sometimes we need dummy categories for test runs or other non-official things but we are unable to delete those once they are created, which makes for quite the organizational tree and clutters up our categories and screens. **Recommendations to others considering ExamSoft:** I would highly recommend ExamSoft. It is great from an administrative end and the students also seem to love it. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** I don't really have any problems with ExamSoft other than the inability to delete categories once created. We have realized great assessment review benefits by being able to review questions and longitudinal data using the reporting feature. We are able to target our teaching to problem areas. ### 12. We started with EXAMSOFT preCOVID and were so grateful to have a system in place that our faculty and students were familiar with that could allow us to readily switch to virtual and still secure examinations. Cost is comparable to other products but the usability and options to a la carte what you need is really exemplary. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** This is probably not specific to EXAMSOFT but more specific to the LMN we have sometimes needing a refresh to link and sync. Overall no major issues with the product. Sometimes students will indicate they do not like to wait for support but the response times are truly not long given the volume you all get! **Recommendations to others considering ExamSoft:** Has been a beneficial addition to our preparation for students for national licensure examination in a similar format. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** Virtual proctoring needs, quicker review of examination and student performance for faculty, seeing test question performance over time. ### 13. I also find it very easy to use and re-use questions year after year. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** There is no ability to get students to show work by apple pencil or stylus. There is no way to implement a guessing penalty. I also find that if you give a lot of assessments, there no way to group them into folders within a class, so it gets cluttered. You can also only copy one assessment at a time. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** The problems are as listed in my dislikes above, it can be very cluttered if used frequently. I also find that the whole class analytics could be stronger, I often find myself just downloading the csvs and analyzing my own data in excel.. ### 14. It was a heavy workload which we did not like, but that was just an attribute of project size. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** We had some initial logistical problems as they related to our exam structure and the number of exams that it would add to the system. I wish students had access to chat support during exams rather than having to do a phone call. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** We can identify students at risk much sooner and determine which content is not being understood. We have solved not having access to computer labs for testing, issues related to campus closer and testing (COVID, weather, etc.). ### 22. The Strengths and Weakness reports are very helpful. It sort of plugs in to our learning management system. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** It's clunky, we're stuck on an old version because they can't move our data to the new one, and students hate it. It's much quicker to evaluate and post results, and adjust scoring without the need for complex formulas. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** There isn't much I dislike about ExamSoft. They have been very responsive when students need help, or when I need help. Every issue I've encountered has been resolved quickly. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** Able to generate use a huge pool of test questions, so exams can be different from year to discounrage any academic dishonesty. I'm also a person that likes to cross out answers and highlight/circle/underline things on exams, and I was nervous about not being able to do this when my program switched over to ExamSoft; but it turned out to be even better than a paper exam because if I change my mind and want to un-cross-out something; I can do that without having to erase and make my exam look like a mess. **What do you dislike about ExamSoft?** The only thing I dislike about ExamSoft is that there is the potential for technical difficulties. In graduate school, our exam days are pretty high stress situations and I have had a couple of classmates run into technical problems that either shut down their entire device they were using or they lost all of their answers and had to go back and take the exam on a paper copy. **What problems is ExamSoft solving and how is that benefiting you?** My physician assistant program uses ExamSoft to test us, and it has cut back on the work for our faculty tremendously. We have very long clinical medicine module exams that we study hard for and want to know our grades right away. In the past; because they are so long, it would take faculty a long time to grade them and then go back and look at what questions may need to be thrown out--collecting that data from 50+ paper copies of an exam was time consuming.
