I had a massive 8.93 GB video file that was corrupted when the power source was turned off before stopping the recording. I tried multiple repair methods first — including FFmpeg commands, VLC’s “fix” prompt, and a couple of free online MP4 repair tools — but none of them were able to handle the size or restore the file on my platform. The CleverFiles team stepped in and delivered. They had me upload the file via Dropbox, manually repaired it, and sent back a fully playable version — despite it being far above their published size limit. Their support team (Mit, David, and Denys) was responsive, knowledgeable, and actually solved the issue, not just gave canned replies. I recently lost a 1.5TB hard drive and wanted to recover the latest data. I left Disk Drill to run a deep scan over night and was surprised to find that it had found over 4TB of recoverable files. During the recovery process the support was right there lightning fast response time and extremely helpful. Would recommend. **What do you dislike about Disk Drill?** When you use any recovery software, you are recovering data and that's it. The file types that are fully recoverable will be determined by the software you use. Therefore there were certain filetypes that could not be recovered at this time (Pro Tools ptx files, although it does support ptf file recovery). The disk drill team were extremely helpful, showed me how to make a filetype request for future Diskdrill releases and upload examples. I did not format or wipe the drive just deleted the folder with a bunch I no longer needed. Not realizing it until I emptied the recycle bin. I freaked out and started searching for recovery programs and at the top of the list was Disk Drill. They say you can download the free version and try it out. That is a bunch of crap. It recovered every icon and every graphic from every program that had been installed on my computer from the first day I turned it on. 86K in pictures alone. when I tried to narrow it to .jpg only, I still had over 36K which went over the 500Mb limit to use the "FREE" version. Thinking that it had recovered something of use to help me get my pictures back I paid the ridiculous fee of $89. I even continued the search to get more results as directed by the program. What did I recover for $89? Two of my pictures and over 100K (just .jpg) files of useless icons, and graphics used in everything windows to Corel draw. Nothing of the more the 16Gb of photos that had literally be deleted hours before. When I contacted Disk Drill they literally told me there are no refunds and they don’t care that their program did NOTHING. If they truly believed in it and stood behind it there would be some form of guarantee; not with this bunch of SCAMMERS. I purchased the product, and ran a deep scan. First of all it's important to know that the application does not maintain your file structure- it lumps everything by file type, e.g., all the jpgs end up in the same folder regardless of where they came from. This would create a nightmare if you've organized files in some way- you'll have to reorganize everything- but they don't tell you this. The scan showed a lot of files were recoverable, so I said recover. It took awhile, and it created a folder on the drive I was boot from. When I went to open the files in the folder, they wouldn't open. I also tried to open many of the applications that had been recovered. Also no dice. It actually turns out it will not recover applications, but they don't tell you that either. I checked all the directions, and I had done everything that was instructed. I ran the recover again, but had the same result. At this point (each step takes many hours) I decided that I would like to try a different product. I emailed and asked for a refund. They said that was done on a case by case biases, and asked me to document a bunch of things about my system, disks, etc. I answered all the questions. They then wrote back and said they needed MORE proof, screen shots of files that would open in preview, but not open after recovery. They stated that just because some files didn't recover, that wasn't their problem- and that I should have checked EVERY file in preview prior to purchasing!!! In the end they said "We are sorry to hear that you are not satisfied. Unfortunately, we are unable to proceed with a refund according to our Terms of Sale, which you've agreed to upon purchase. " And that was that! If their product doesn't work- to damn bad- they are keeping your money anyway! In the end I purchased Stellar and it worked perfectly and was able to recover my data! One of the great features of Disk Drill is how robust and feature-loaded the BASIC (free) version is. The app features many great features beyond file restoration, including Drive Clean Up, Duplication Finder, and DMG backups. The app looks easy to use. It boasts a simple UI with loads of functionality. Each function area features a minimalist full-color screen that explains how it works and invites users to watch tutorial videos. Overall, the interface is appealing and seemingly easy to use. **What do you dislike about Disk Drill?** The product's recovery system doesn't work on our MAC. For context, we had a massive data loss of core projects accidentally trashed. We FULLY tested the BASIC version, and it failed to find any deleted files. The PRO edition offers a deeper scan and more robust recovery methods—so we purchased it. Installation of PRO requires an additional plugin that keeps crashing and re-installing after every restart. Eventually, we did get the additional plugin to work and FULLY tested the PRO version, but still no result. It never found any deleted files. After numerous emails with support and hours of testing, they dropped the bomb on us and stated that it doesn't work on MACs with SSDs. Unfortunately, SSDs have been standard in MACs since 2015. If you're tech-savvy and have another MAC, you may be able to finagle your way through a "target" drive technique they mention. Losing files can be stressful. Our expectation of Customer Service would be to help you recover files. Instead of focusing on the customer and the root problem, it becomes more of a justification of why the product may not be working. We jumped through every hoop the Disk Drill team put before us and never managed to get the app to scan files properly. The app never worked. Even in a mock test of a recently deleted file, it could not find recently deleted files. So while customer service makes an effort to help, they seem bothered and defensive of the product. There's more effort to remind you that the product is non-refundable than there is help. TO SUMMARIZE: For us, the product failed at its one job: recovery. IS IT RIGHT FOR ME? Maybe. Despite our negative experience, many users love it. As mentioned before, the BASIC version has tons of great features. If it works for you, support your developers and purchase it. Buyer beware: their software is NOT REFUNDABLE and it states as much at point of purchase. The team was kind enough to issue us a refund in our unique case. So please do test out the BASIC version first. **Recommendations to others considering Disk Drill:** If you want to try it, use the BASIC version. If it doesn't work, call their support team. Purchasing the PRO version may not help with file recovery. I had many photos and media on the 4tb drive that were not redundant on other drives, so recovery was crucial. I tried fsck at the command line to no avail. With the academic discount, the price was just under 80 bucks, after a deep scan, voila my files were recovered. I highly recommend. A discount data recovery job runs about 500-700 bucks, so this was much cheaper and efficacious. You can also make an image of a drive that doesn't mount in your os. I will have to try the delete duplicates on my SSD which boots my OS, seems like nifty feature. Final verdict: highly recommend. Its worth the money over competitors. **What do you dislike about Disk Drill?** I wish it was a bit cheaper. 49 bucks seems like my sweet point. It did recover 95% of the footage, and we had some work to do in Post Production to re-color the footage since the Color information files were not recovered.
