## Codeanywhere Reviews
 ### 1. Good service until 2022. Then the service becomes very unreliable.

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Peter H. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

The ability to put up a container and code fast.

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

After 2022, the service is very unreliable. Any attempts to ask for support won't be resolved until days later. This is not good if you have a business that is depending on CodeAnywhere containers being up - since they can be down for days with no reason and zero support.

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It used to help me in setting up an online service and get a business idea rolling fast. However, that's not the case anymore after 2022.

 ### 2. The Best IDE I've used for my development work and managing servers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adrian V. | Product Manager/Tech Lead, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 23, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

I love the legacy IDE and have been using it for more than two years. I use it to manage my servers on Azure/AWS and work on the code directly in the containers

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

Recently they took away the shortcut to the legacy IDE; it used to be easy to access the moment I logged in to my account. But in recent updates, it has gotten more difficult to access the legacy IDE directly. Dev/Product Team, please bring back the shortcut to the IDE and please do not remove the legacy IDE as one your features.

Updates: Dev/Product Team brought back the shortcut! Thanks team!

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As I have multiple workstations, one at work and one at home, I can easily continue where I left off (coding/development) whether I'm working from Office/Work. I can also work on my projects on my iPad.

 ### 3. Great! Most of the time

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 30, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

Code Anywhere has been a great tool in helping me organize projects and manage client websites. Editing is quick and easy, and I can log in from anywhere to make updates

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

There are occasional bugs that prevent me from editing or saving any work. When this occurs, it's usually for about 30 minutes. Although rare, it is annoying. More customization would be nice too, for example, when double-clicking a variable in PHP (Ex: $my_name), I'd like to be able to choose in my settings whether or not to highlight the $. This would save time.

**Recommendations to others considering Codeanywhere:**

I love it!

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I manage several client websites almost exclusively through Code Anywhere. It allows me to quickly and easy make changes, and then go back to the website and refresh. As a developer, constant changing, saving, and refreshing is needed. It's nice to not have to worry about uploading via FTP every time.

 ### 4. Solution for remote development work with restricted access by IP-address

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dirk V. | GDPR Consultant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

One of my clients has restricted access to their server on IP-address. As I work more than 50% of my time remotely, Codeanywhere is the solution. I once gave all IP-addresses of Codeanywhere to IT-security and now I can work everywhere. This is what I like best. But also development on my iPad. I did not find any other solution that permits me to be a developer in PHP on my iPad. The editor is great and I like the SFTP direct connections to my sources.

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

The price. For the Freelancer Plan with SFTP-connections, I pay $8 * 12 = $96 / year. It is too expensive for me but I did not find an alternative as good as Codeanywhere.

**Recommendations to others considering Codeanywhere:**

there is no better solution for remote workers that want to code

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

PHP development while working remotely.
I like the possibility to work on my iPad so that I can make quick edits in the PHP-code when needed or in case of a bug.

 ### 5. Easy to use, functional, cloud development environment

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** B. Mark E. | Digital Business Manager – R&D, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

It's super easy for me to connect Codeanywhere to Digital Ocean servers, so I can spin up a development environment and start deploying resources in minutes. The interface of Codeanywhere makes it easy to connect to the server, pull the code from GitHub, edit and deploy, all in my browser. The low cost means I'm not stressed about extra layers. Instead, I get to focus on development.

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

Some elements of the UI can feel a bit clunky, but that's generally not the case.

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Codeanywhere for fast prototyping of web applications I develop on Digital Ocean. Because I have my SSH keys saved, I can spin up the server and deploy and execute code in minutes. It's awesome that I have the console and IDE in the same window for my development server, and I can switch between my laptop while I'm watching TV and my desktop for focus, all without missing a beat.

 ### 6. The best cloud IDE I've found, but increasingly falls behind VS Code

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joe D. | Full-stack developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

I can use it from a browser anywhere. I'm a Chromebook user so a cloud-based service is ideal for me. It's a pretty good basic code editor. It handles SFTP and SSH connections which is handy. I've tried other alternatives like Shift Edit but found them buggier (although CodeAnywhere has some bugs too).

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

I've started using VS Code in the past year (as my newer Chromebook can run Linux and Android apps). Seeing what a really good code editor can be, I increasingly see the limitations of CodeAnywhere. I'm still using it as it's handy for smaller projects where I can get away with the limitations, but less and less. It feels like it was a really innovative idea 5+ years ago, but the company hasn't invested in keeping it up to date.

I also have misgivings about the support and stability. There are also some random bugs and they don't seem to get fixed. And a year or two back there was a major outage -- the entire service didn't work (for a day or more I think). The company seemed to go into a bunker mentality and barely apologised or communicated what was happening and how quickly it would be solved. That was a big red flag for me, as up until that point I'd been reliant on CodeAnywhere for my work, and it's pushed me to look elsewhere. I'm not convinced how customer-centric they really are as a company.

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to code from anywhere I have a laptop and an internet connection, without needing extra software beyond a browser.

 ### 7. Makes coding easy!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Heather C. | Web Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

My favorite thing about Codeanywhere is that it has version history - it has saved me so many times! I also love the code formatting, autocomplete, and just how easy it is to use.

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

My only complaint is that the checkbox to remain signed in doesn't really work - if I keep the browser tab open and come back the next day, it does make me sign in again. But that is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, since it makes my life easier!

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am a programmer, and I love coding, but the backend stuff is not my thing. With Codeanywhere, my project manager just sends me an environment to work in and everything is all set up already. I don't have to set up a test environment myself or any of that confusing stuff. I can just focus on coding!

 ### 8. Croatia-based IDE operates exactly as you think it would

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 30, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

I appreciate cloud IDEs for team collaboration.

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

"Always on" servers shut off in the middle of code edits, resulting in lost code. Custom domains do not work over HTTPS via Cloudflare (or possibly at all). The editor is slow and clunky, even though they are now trying to emulate VS Code's UI. If you click into a project from the dashboard, it dumps you into whatever project you had open in the IDE last, which means wasted time as you discover you are editing the wrong project. Service is sometimes rude, combative, or unresponsive depending on who you get -- it seems set up to trap people into no refund periods even if due to their non-responsiveness. As soon as you mention "refund," expect to get lost in support hell and be prepared to contest the charge. Not worth the headache.

**Recommendations to others considering Codeanywhere:**

Don't. Support is selective at best, non-existent at worst. Codeanywhere's offerings are deceptive and borderline fraudulent. They will tell you to wait for someone to get back to you regarding an advertised discount on your existing plan, then refuse to budge when they bill you full price and throw their user acceptance agreement up as an excuse for no refunds. Your service isn't working, and you are not satisfied? No refund, here's our service agreement. I'm contesting my second charge from them in two years and cutting them loose. I'm going back to AWS Cloud 9.

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was able to provide staged sites for clients.

 ### 9. Amazing development Tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ramssés G. | Software Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 28, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

We're able to manage all stuff together, my containers, connections, and IDE, all this in a collaborative way.

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

There are few times the pair programming (collaborative development) breaks down.

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can code anywhere literally; we don't need to carry on our computers and take one with an internet connection.

 ### 10. Long-term subscriber, still love it

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kasia G. | Owner & Principal, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 01, 2021

**What do you like best about Codeanywhere?**

I can access my resources from anywhere with an internet connection. The editor itself is very intuitive and well-designed.

**What do you dislike about Codeanywhere?**

Nothing! It's a great service and I plan to continue my subscription.

**What problems is Codeanywhere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Makes live editing and development easy. No constant FTPing of files.
