"Modernizes Mainframe Development with Seamless IDE Workflows and CI/CD"
4/5
What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?

What I like most about BMC AMI DevX is how effectively it modernizes legacy mainframe development across the key operational areas that matter day to day.

UI/UX & Workflows: By replacing traditional 3270 green-screen interfaces with modern IDEs like VS Code and Eclipse, it makes routine work feel far more streamlined. Features such as graphical program structure charts, data-flow visualizers, and interactive debugging reduce constant context switching and help me stay focused.

AI & Intelligence: The integrated GenAI capabilities (BMC AMI Assistant) provide instant, plain-English code explanations, which makes complex COBOL and JCL logic much easier to understand without having to dig through outdated documentation.

Integrations & DevOps: Seamless connections with Git, Jenkins, and automated CI/CD pipelines help bring mainframe release management into alignment with broader enterprise DevOps standards.

Support & Onboarding: It noticeably lowers onboarding friction for developers without prior mainframe experience, so new team members can start contributing sooner.

Performance & ROI: Automated testing via Total Test improves release velocity and reduces regression issues. Over time, that translates into strong ROI by cutting legacy maintenance overhead and accelerating time-to-market. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?

The initial learning curve can be fairly steep for new team members because of the wide range of capabilities across debugging, analysis, and testing. Although bringing this functionality into VS Code and Eclipse is a major improvement over green screens, the interface can sometimes feel busy, which makes advanced features harder to find and use without dedicated training.

From a performance standpoint, initial workspace indexing and heavy data extractions (e.g., via File-AID) can occasionally cause latency when parsing large COBOL or JCL codebases over remote connections. Regarding pricing and ROI, the high enterprise licensing tier requires deep organization-wide adoption across the entire pipeline before realizing a strong return on investment. Finally, while AI and intelligence tools like BMC AMI Assistant offer useful plain-English code explanations, deeper generative features like automated refactoring and predictive test generation still feel early-stage and need further tuning for customized legacy setups.
