AWS Directory Service made it straightforward to extend our existing Microsoft Active Directory into AWS without deploying and maintaining additional domain controllers. I particularly like AWS Managed Microsoft AD, AD Connector, and Simple AD, which provide flexibility depending on whether you need a fully managed directory or simply want to proxy authentication to an on-premises environment.

The service integrates seamlessly with Amazon WorkSpaces, Amazon FSx for Windows File Server, Amazon EC2, and AWS IAM Identity Center, allowing users to authenticate with their existing corporate credentials. Deployment is straightforward, the management console is intuitive, and AWS handles backups, monitoring, and patching automatically. Advanced Active Directory administration is still required for complex enterprise environments, and certain schema modifications or legacy Group Policy configurations can be restrictive compared to managing your own Windows domain controllers.
