  ### 1. Straightforward Tax Automation and Responsive Support, but Pricey and Still Complex

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

Avalara handles our sales tax calculations for our eCommerce store and also manages our tax returns, so our accountant doesn’t have to. This saves us many hours of work each month. As an admin, I find the platform very straightforward to manage and navigate. I also really like the Nexus tracking heat map, which shows when we’re getting close to needing to collect taxes in a specific region based on our sales. Their support is also very responsive. I have the option to open a case or chat/call directly with a representative that can help me navigate the complications of taxes.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

I feel that Avalara can be complicated just because it's dealing with taxes, which is what they are there to make easier.  Taxes are just daunting.  I will say that it is a very expensive service.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Avalara helps us manage multiple tax returns across different regions each month. It also addresses the challenge of knowing where we need to collect taxes and where we don’t. On top of that, it guides us through setting up tax returns when we expand into new regions.

  ### 2. The worst SaaS experience

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

Avalara filed some of our taxes correctly but missed several filings. They did nothing to help the situation. There was a bug with the shopify connector (their product) and we were stuck with the late fees. We made the decision to cancel due to their increasing fees, poor customer service, dated user experience and faulty product. In February, 
when I canceled our contract with Avalara, they ignored me and continued to bill our account. They even withdrew ACH funds ($15,913.79) on April 14th. The most recent withdrawal is not confirmed to be paid to the states for our taxes. It appears they have kept the money. They have been unresponsive via email since February 20th (it's April 23rd today).

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Their communication is incredibly poor. I requested an update to our contract and they neglected to send it to me. I canceled our service and they continued to bill me. I've resorted to charging back with Amex (won) and now reversing an ACH with our bank. Avalara doesn't give you access to remove your ACH payment info, avoid them completely.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They attempt to file taxes on behalf of merchants but they have dropped the ball multiple times. Their late filings cost us late fees. They are unhelpful when a mistake happens and don't take ownership of their mistakes.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

I really appreciate how Avalara streamlines our sales tax filing, making the entire process much more efficient by saving a tremendous amount of labor. The system allows us to file our tax returns accurately and quickly across numerous jurisdictions, which is incredibly valuable for our business operations. This efficiency in managing sales tax responsibilities has had a positive impact on our business workflow. Additionally, I am pleased with how Avalara assists us in accurately billing our clients for sales tax and supports the preparation and filing of our sales tax returns in multiple jurisdictions. Given its excellent performance, I would easily give Avalara a top score of 10 out of 10, as it has proven to be the best product on the market for us.

I use Avalara to accurately bill sales tax and simplify filing returns across multiple jurisdictions, saving significant labor and time.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

I appreciate that Avalara meets all my sales tax needs as a full solution that includes integration with my ERP, accurate tax calculations, exemption management, and handling returns filing and remittance. It's great that I never again have to file a state sales tax return manually; it just happens now, saving me many days of work. The people at Avalara are fun, which adds a nice touch to the experience. I find it easy to use, thanks to my prior experience, and I’m glad it's integrated with Epicor Kinetic.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

As with most software/services, front line support is hit or miss. Sometimes good, and sometimes poor. Having a process for experienced users to bypass front line support and immediately go to higher level support.

**Recommendations to others considering Avalara:**

I have recommended it to many of my friends.  It is a life saver.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Avalara handles my tax calculations, exemption management, and returns filing. It ensures tax accuracy, manages exemption certificates, and I never need to file a state sales tax return manually again. It saves me days on tax tasks with ERP integration.

  ### 5. Leave compliance in the hands of the experts!

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

I love that Avalara has experts to know all the state laws when it comes to sales tax.  With the addition of economic nexus, our state collection requirements more than doubled and Avalara helped us to get compliant in all the states we needed to.  They had a nice tracker and dashboard to make it easy and clear where and when we needed to get registered.  
Don't forget about the ever changing tax rules like the retail delivery fees some states have added (with more along the way) and all the juristictional tax rate updates...they are on it and have the rules implemented for clean collection and filing.  They have just saved us so much headache and hours of trying to keep up with all of it.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Customer support could use some work.  I understand there are thousands, if not more, of clients probably constantly reaching out for help so do understand the delays that can be had, but some of the responses we get are just the canned, "out of the handbook", responses that do not really offer any help.  Yes, I can go to the Help Center and get the same response, but I went to support for a more personal touch, if you will.  I do still get my answers, for the most part, but sometimes it takes a little while to get there.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our problem was compliance and Avalara helped with that to get us through the Wayfair and ramifications that came with it.  We are fully compliant and didn't need to hire on a team of tax experts to get us through it.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

I like how Avalara makes tax management easy by providing timely updates on recent tax rule changes. The automated calculations save time and reduce errors, allowing me to focus more on my core work rather than worrying about tax changes and calculations. Avalara supports us in maintaining ECM with our ECM Pro subscription, significantly saving time in tax calculation and return filing processes. I appreciate that taxes can be calculated with a single click, and once an invoice is prepared, the tax is automatically calculated. This eliminates the need to worry about tax rates, which is incredibly convenient. Also, it helps in obtaining SST in any new state where we cross the threshold.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

The user experience can sometimes feel complex, and faster support responses would be helpful. Improving these areas would make Avalara even more efficient.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Avalara to simplify tax management with automated calculations and single-click tax processes, saving time and reducing errors. Continuous updates ensure compliance, letting us focus on core tasks without worrying about tax changes.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

I don't like anything about Avalara. Would not recommend this product.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Software issues, lack of accountability, no real support, predatory pricing terms, and a general lack of knowledge from the Account Managers—overall, a terrible company to partner with on such an important issue. 

In one month, they caused $100k+ in sales tax reporting discrepancies and missed sales transactions in Avalara. They won’t ensure a resolution and only about pushing you to purchase higher tiers. You're lucky if the Account Manager knows anything about the product to apply it to your business case. 

They’re getting themselves ready to go public again, so they’re trying to make operations look better than they are. Don’t let anyone fool you—this company is consistently the wrong decision. Go with Vertex if you are at the enterprise level.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This software causes more headaches than it solves. It’s one of only two sales tax platforms allowed on Shopify, and it feels like it’s pushed by Shopify because Shopify makes more money through its Avalara and Vertex partnership than by leveraging its own sales tax product for clients.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

Avalara takes the stress out of compliance and is a reasonably priced options for small companies. So far I like the Ai dashboard options that were recently added.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

The calculations shown in the reports don’t always match the calculations on the returns. This is especially true for Texas, where the tax amount for the state-rate portion is almost always incorrect or doesn’t line up with what the return shows.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Tax rate compliance and filing SST returns have been the number-one problem solver for us. Instead of spending hours on research and constantly updating everything manually, Avalara keeps the tax rates up to date as changes happen. It’s also extremely helpful that we can upload transactions from a separate database and have them included in our reports and returns.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

I love that Avalara is easy to set up and let run on its own, without needing constant monitoring, plus it notifies me of any issues. It also provides report status updates to keep everything on track. The automated notifications and having a dedicated guide for setup make it truly effective, eliminating problems from the start. I enjoy using Avalara with Xero, which is great for small to medium-sized businesses. Avalara simplifies the process of managing sales tax across different regions, making sure everything is in compliance, from GST in Australia or the UK to VAT in the EU. Everything is properly registered, in compliance, and filings are done on time, ensuring peace of mind. Avalara has grown into a better and easier system, making it straightforward for my small business staff to learn and utilize it effectively, which is fantastic.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

I think the only thing that I've found in working with ecommerce businesses is there is sometimes a glitch between the sales/ecommerce platform which may not be Avalara's fault, mind you. When utilizing Amazon and Shopify, sometimes there are connection issues that you do have to monitor or make sure stay established. And that again is probably because of the marketplace provider has either done an update thus causing the connection to disconnect. However, from my experience, it does need some improvement with additional support in some countries because being able to register on your own for smaller third world countries is a little bit tricky. And being able to have that extra guidance or direction to make sure it's done properly. I personally speak only three languages. And if I don't understand the language I'm definitely not gonna understand the complicated structure of those applications.

I use Avalara for sales tax and automated filings. It solves cross-border issues, simplifies understanding the nexus, and helps register timely. The automated notifications and setup assistance are valuable, ensuring everything is on track without constant checking.

The Avatax implementation process did not clearly define what counts as a single exempt certificate, leaving the scope of an "exempt cert" ambiguous.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

On time filing, as well as proper monitoring for nexus in states we don't currently file in.  This benefits us by alleviating interest and penalties we've had to pay in the past.
