I have used GameMaker for personal and academic use since 2008

|GameMaker
GameMaker is a simple game creation software that allows young students to better understand game development. It is also useful for creating 2D games and recently has allowed for multi platform development.

Wanna make games? Game Maker is a good choice for beginners.

Being aimed at beginners Game Maker is much easier to pick up on than other engines such as Unity. Instead of having to learn a more difficult language such as C#, Game Maker has it's own programming language tooled towards beginners, which is used exclusively with Game Maker.

Perfect for a project in 2d

Simple to use and easy to import mass number of files. I find the little things like alpha levels in images nice to control and easy to trouble shoot when there's any sort of issue. that used to be frustrating in other engines.
