Wiregaurd performance in terms of low latency of data transfer and speed of tunnel establishment is really noticeable to end-user applications when compared to other VPN technologies (and I'm an OpenVPN user of many years, many sites, and many deployment models). The Wireguard client (on iOS) allows you to define rules when it should connect on demand. This feature is simply not a concept in the OpenVPN world where you have to decide to turn the VPN client on or off.
