"Streamlined Bookkeeping with Room for Localization"
What do you like best about TopNotepad?

The tiered user permission system is its biggest strength for our shared team environment. I can quickly create separate access groups for trainees, regular bookkeepers and compliance staff to block sensitive client profit data, directly lowering GDPR risks without messy file-level locking. Every invoice and expense change generates an unalterable log fully recognized for GoBD audits. All scanned receipts attach straight to matching transactions in one workspace; we no longer hunt through dozens of disconnected Excel sheets or shared drives when tax officials request supporting documents. The simple interface also lets new hires pick up daily expense logging fast. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about TopNotepad?

There’s no native export template formatted to German GoBD standards, meaning I must export raw logs and restructure every dataset in Excel ahead of audits. It cannot sync bidirectionally with our primary accounting ERP, forcing repetitive manual data transfers every month. No automated reminders alert me when receipt retention periods near expiration, so I manually track archiving deadlines. Most frustratingly, there is no German language version, which creates constant slowdowns for our native German junior bookkeepers entering client data daily. "Centralizes Tax Compliance Efficiently, Needs Better Integration"
What do you like best about TopNotepad?

I work in Canadian tax compliance, and the ability to build fully custom checklist templates is a lifesaver. I set up repeatable workflows for month-end wrap-ups and quarterly GST/HST filing trackers, and every edit auto-saves so I never lose half-finished notes mid-work. The search function works lightning fast, so I can pull up old client tax adjustment memos in seconds instead of digging through piles of old text files. Offline functionality is another huge win for on-site client meetings; I can jot down reconciliation notes without cell service or Wi-Fi, and everything syncs back to the cloud as soon as I reconnect. These custom checklists cut down hours of repetitive drafting each month and keep our whole team aligned on CRA filing deadlines without messy paper trackers. What do you dislike about TopNotepad?

The biggest pain point is zero native connectivity to our core accounting ERP and QuickBooks. I have to manually copy all GST, HST and payroll figures back and forth, which creates extra admin work and room for human error. There’s also no native deadline reminder tool for CRA submissions, so I still have to cross-reference separate calendars to avoid late filings. Access permissions are extremely limited too—there’s no way to lock sensitive client tax files from junior staff, so accidental edits or deletions are a constant worry. On top of that, there are no pre-made templates built for Canadian accounting standards out of the box; I spent a full workday building all our GST and month-end checklists from scratch, and the onboarding walkthroughs offer zero guidance for finance-specific teams. "Streamlines German Tax Reporting, Needs More ERP Integration"
What do you like best about TopNotepad?

As a cross-entity financial reporting specialist at a Frankfurt accounting firm serving multiple German subsidiaries, the native alignment with GoBD, HGB and GDPR is TopNotepad’s biggest strength. All our ledger, invoice and expense data resides solely on EU servers, which eliminates piles of extra documentation we once needed to prove safe cross-border data handling to German data protection authorities. Every transaction creates a locked, non-editable audit trail that fully meets GoBD traceability obligations. Our external tax auditors rarely ask for supplementary spreadsheets now, which slashes audit preparation hours. Customizable tiered user permissions let me wall off confidential subsidiary balance sheets so only assigned accountants can view sensitive revenue and payroll figures. The pre-configured German VAT invoice templates drastically cut human error when billing domestic clients, and its consolidated reporting module merges financial figures from all our regional branches in one place. This unified dataset makes compiling our yearly mandatory CSRD sustainability disclosures far less labor-intensive compared to our previous legacy system. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about TopNotepad?

The biggest pain point is the absence of native two-way ERP integration. Every month I have to manually generate, download and upload CSV files to sync subsidiary ledgers with our group enterprise resource system—a repetitive process that carries risk of mismatched intercompany transaction records. There is no bulk template editing function for VAT invoices. If we update legal text or tax line items for all branch clients, I have to adjust each template individually, which drags out process updates during busy fiscal periods. The platform’s default audit export layout does not match official GoBD formatting requirements accepted by German tax offices, so I spend extra time restructuring files in Excel before every audit submission. Dashboards built to track CSRD sustainability metrics are also very limited, with few customizable visual widgets for group-level reporting. Receipt scanning functionality only delivers reliable results for German-language fiscal documents. Invoices from French, Dutch or English-speaking international clients frequently misparse VAT IDs, tax percentages and total taxable amounts. Our team must manually correct every foreign receipt entry afterward. The OCR engine lacks training on standard EU cross-border tax document formats, creating consistent workflow delays. Additional improvements we urgently need: direct API connections to official German tax filing portals to eliminate all CSV export work, a group-wide bulk invoice template editor, and pre-built GoBD-compliant audit report exports to cut post-processing time. Onboarding also had notable hurdles. Basic single-subsidiary bookkeeping setup was intuitive, but configuring cross-branch permission hierarchies, aligning transaction logging rules to strict GoBD standards, and importing several years of historical subsidiary financial records demanded hours of manual fine-tuning. There are no ready-made report templates tailored for German multi-group CSRD filings, forcing me to build all sustainability reporting outputs from scratch before rolling the tool out firm-wide. "Tabbed Editing Simplifies Task Management"
What do you like best about TopNotepad?

I really appreciate TopNotepad's tabbed editing feature. It's the most valuable feature for our team because it ends the chaos of having multiple desktop windows open. With TopNotepad, we can open 5–10 text files in a single window, which is a game-changer. It stops us from wasting 30 minutes a day hunting for windows. I also love how easy the initial setup is. There were no installation wizards, no need to create an account, and no complex configuration. This simplicity is critical for small businesses like ours that lack a dedicated tech team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about TopNotepad?

No bulk file actions: We can't close multiple unused tabs at once (only 'close current' or 'close all others') or bulk save/rename TopNotepad files—actions that are critical for cleaning up our tabbed workflow at the end of the day or for renaming project files in bulk. For SMBs, time is our most valuable resource—these small file management inefficiencies add up quickly over the workweek. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
