Managing risk and effectively articulating risk to a client was extremely difficult before Riskalyze came along and revolutionized the process. I call my pre-Riskalyze days the Dark Ages of managing money. I no longer feel like I'm managing money in the dark. Riskalyze puts real dollar amounts to gains and losses for clients during the risk assessment. After you enter their portfolio amount, they can see what a certain percentage loss or gain would actually look like in real numbers. It also assigns every holding they have a risk score, and weights their entire portfolio to show whether or not it lines up with what their risk score was, which has been very helpful in illustrating the real need for recommended portfolio allocation changes on more than one occasion. It took awhile to get a handle on how to enter portfolios in to the software accurately, as numbers and percentages can automatically change as you add more holdings if you do not do it correctly from the start. This has caused several of our clients to realize they are not anywhere near as conservative or aggressive as they thought they were, as seeing the actual dollar amounts and envisioning their statement showing it hits in a different way than saying "a loss of X%" does. It really helps us illustrate when a client's portfolio is taking on a level of risk that is simply not suitable for them, and provides a necessary back up during discussions regarding necessary portfolio changes. It has also helped us provide clients with reasonable expectations of what their portfolios will look like in the event of market volatility, and given us something to fall back on if they call us worried about their portfolio returns. We have the ability now to remind them that during their risk assessment, they said they would be comfortable with the dollar amounts presented to them, and that we are within them, leaving them no need to worry, since their allocation is appropriate. Recommendations to others considering Nitrogen: Try to go to one of their live training sessions. They are great for tips and tricks and provide insight to the options that they provide through their various subscriptions. It was not difficult for our team to find a training session that was close to us, and they even gave us a free pass for one of the members in the office after we had purchased two seats. I would also definitely recommend building your own frequently used models (if you have them) to easily do side by side risk comparisons for clients of their current model against what you could provide them. It solves the problem of hypothetical market situations clients think they would be ok with being abstract to them by illustrating hard numbers (for example, what their total portfolio would drop to in the event of a double digits downturn in the market).
