I love the AI agent built into Hex. The agent is accurate and is trained to automatically update and requery tables as needed. It allows me to find which tables in the database I need, automatically query hundreds of thousands of results quickly, provide concise analysis through its AI, and quickly create tables and charts through simple prompting. The AI agent has allowed me to ask questions about the data and get an understanding of data structures prior to writing any SQL queries. It shows its work by recording the chat transcript and each SQL query and table of results that it creates with every iterative prompt. There could be a way to preview data better. With the amount of data that my company has and with how the data in those tables has changed over time, it would be helpful to preview recent results instead of a snapshot of the oldest records. I would like a date filter for the preview on the data table, or searching for individual record fields in the data preview to see if the table has the item I am looking for. I appreciate how easy it is to create custom reports and analyses, ranging from simple descriptive statistics to more advanced analytics. As a data developer at my company—combining aspects of both data engineering and analysis—I really enjoy coding in notebooks. We use BigQuery as our datawarehouse so the integration was so easy. Additionally, since I serve as the admin for our Hex account, I find the platform’s user-friendly interface for management to be a major advantage. As a developer, I can't say that there's anything I currently dislike about Hex. However, from an admin perspective, I wish there were more detailed statistics available about users and their interactions with the platform. It's very straightforward to start writing analyses, and to host them on the internet for others to see. The provided interactive elements also make it possible to write dashboards to help automate simple business processes that require human input. This is more of a business process issue than a Hex issue, but here goes: It is important to scope out your project before starting with Hex. Once the number of cells in a project begins to swell (~70+ cells), the optimizations for notebook visuals become an editing problem. Ctrl-F will fail to take you to the correct cell, and trying to scroll up or down through the notebook becomes very sluggish as every cell you scroll over takes time to load, as they are unloaded once they are far enough away from the viewport. I cannot find a good workaround for this issue. Additionally, there is no multiline find-and-select, which can make refactoring code an enormous pain, especially when coupled with the notebook size issue. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I use Hex for writing text queries to access Snowflake and find it much easier that way. It makes it easy to visualize data and helps with sharing interactive dashboards with teammates. I really like the scheduling aspect, where it's like live updating. The shareability and interactivity of the output are great. Hex is special because it updates more frequently, and I can set a schedule for it to update. This allows stakeholders to explore the data on their own, making it more than just a static graph. I do find that the integration with AI tools is really lacking right now. For example, in order for me to use Claude to create a dashboard, I have to download a YAML file, modify it, teach Hex how to read the YAML file, and then reupload it. I love Hex for analytics, exploration, and upskilling. It offers more customizations than other BI tools, providing more control over the output, which I really like. The AI agent in Hex is phenomenal and speeds up my workload by 10 times. I find the initial setup to be super easy. It integrates well with our data stack, including our warehouse and dbt. I think notebooks can become quite long and bloated, running for a while. A cleanup assistant, or a way to break the notebook into blocks that run would be cool. Yeah, making it easier to run sections, and having an agent help reduce sprawl would be great. I love the fact that Hex allows me to create apps that can be used either as reports for deep analysis or interactive tools for nontechnical partners to explore and find answers themselves. It's so interactive and easy to use, making it a unique feature of Hex. I appreciate how Hex makes it really easy to create tools for my cross-functional partners and interactive dashboards because I can flip between Python and SQL seamlessly. The amount of visualizations I can create is basically unlimited. I can do complex analyses and easily create reports to share without having to switch between different tools. There's a lot of confusion from our nontechnical partners who frequently request edit access when it's not what they need. The developer seat is very expensive, which makes the data engineering team clamp down on who has edit capabilities and revoke access from those who accidentally ask for the wrong thing. I also find the AI feature in Hex not very helpful. It struggles with fixing SQL bugs, often making incorrect changes and reformatting everything without making it clear what the initial bug was.
