Confusing interface for an unnecessary product **Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Nate P. | Assistant Registrar, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** August 12, 2021 **What do you like best about Digication?** Digication allows for direct linking of important files and storage, though it does not have a robust search or tagging interface to create better identification of the items that have been attached to a meeting or file. **What do you dislike about Digication?** Digication has an extremely vertical file structure, requiring an endless amount of clicks to get to a specific area. It's possible my organization is not using it for the expressed purpose, but my experience is that the structure, lacking a decent search function, is difficult to use. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** Use it for the express purpose - trying to make it into something it is not really hinders the product. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use it for an online file storage system for university-wide meetings. The rationale behind this is beyond me, as we already have other, better systems for this. It would seem like this might be a better tool for a singular student project, including many aspects of research, findings, and methodology that are able to be linked together, and it's possible others are using digication for that purpose. I guess it's nice that many files can be uploaded, in different formats on any given person's digication page, but there is nothing user friendly about this interface. Additionally, unless the author of a page were to email you directly, it's impossible to know when updates and new information has been posted to a Digication page. It could be useful for someone who is lacking a centralized tool to post and access resources and does offer better security features than some other platforms, but it's not the best in its league. **What do you dislike about Digication?** Digication is clunky: it's far too tedious to find the page that you need. Setup is fairly simple, but without instructions or guidance, it's easy to overlook key elements. Many of my colleagues were forgetful to "publish" the changes that they were making to their pages, resulting in all sorts of mishaps with the software. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** Explore other options or use this on a trial basis before committing. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** Digication was required to use by my university for posting grades and accessing key information (midterm, final exams) and uploading files of student work for grade audits. Although many users are unhappy with Digication, our relationship continues because the college has bought into the software for an enduring term. ### 3. I loved being able to hop on and see my schedules, syllabus, and the ability to upload projects from home. **What do you dislike about Digication?** General usability seems to be an issue. I had issues with it as a student, and have had many interns complain about the same functionality years later. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** Find easier ways to integrate into the curriculum. I preferred it as a hub to download need documents, less so for uploading and turning in homework. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** It was used in my college for all of our classes and for homework submissions. It also allowed students to have online portfolios. ### 4. It is a wonderful resource as far as giving users essentially the capacity to host mini web pages with various documents posted on separate tabs or pages. **What do you dislike about Digication?** The overall design of the site is clunky and has a poor interface. Alerts are not sent when new postings are uploaded. I also dislike the inability to edit documents that are posted or to make edits before printing. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** At my former college, digication was used for the assessment of student work and to share materials within my department. ### 5. Having an ePortfolio can help students working to achieve career goals and help universities in promoting students and their abilities. This can be helpful when trying to achieve specific goals and get more viewership. I like to use this to help them with getting jobs as well. It can be used to make connections, too. **What do you dislike about Digication?** I dislike that this is not more popular and well-known throughout the education community. I am looking forward to it becoming even more popular and adding more capabilities as it progresses. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** I would consider this as a way to integrate technology with the future and optimize showing off students and portfolios in an organized way. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** This solves the problem of unorganization of portfolios, and keeps things all together in a way to really showcase in the best way possible. Different people with different interests can make this customizable. ### 6. I am required to use Digication for my portfolio and have had nothing but issues with it. Not to mention the ridiculously out of date page editing system that seems to have been taken from the first version of Microsoft Word. **What do you dislike about Digication?** Another complaint I have is how aesthetically disastrous this platform is. In an age of 5k graphics, There is no acceptation for a "new" platform to have pixelated graphics and absolutely zero appeal to design. From a students and millennials point of view, it doesn't deserve to have a place in education to business. I cannot understand how this website can be the mandatory platform for a professional portfolio. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** I recommend going with another website building platform as Digication still has many bugs to figure out. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** To answer the above question, none. Digication is not solving any problems it in fact causing me problems, there has been three accidental deletions of my pages and work, not to mention countless compatibility problems with the outdated adobe flash. ### 7. The interface is attractive and the steps one takes to showcase their work is also intuitive. The student also has a large degree of autonomy in determining the privacy settings and who can view their work for how long. **What do you dislike about Digication?** There were some glitches with onboarding the platform. Some students mistakenly "hid" their work by dragging and dropping their work to the wrong area of the screen. It was difficult for instructors to catch this, and would sometimes lead to confusion. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** Provide clear instructions to users and be sure to use Digication's very friendly customer service! **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our old platform was very difficult to use and not very pleasing to the eye. There were many differences in how students' work was presented that could lead to instructor based mistakes in grading. Different tabs can be set up, in a similar way to creating folders would operate if you were using Google classroom, that can house multiple files. **What do you dislike about Digication?** too time-consuming to get started using the platform; frustrating for a first time user. Additionally, there are emails or updates sent to let you know when relevant information has been uploaded that you need to see. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** I had no choice but to use digication as a requirement for an a college class that I was adjuncting for this spring. I would not choose to use this platform again unless required to. ### 9. It is not especially difficult to use once you have browsed through the features. **What do you dislike about Digication?** It is a bit of a learning curve, getting used to the set up of the program. The features can take some time to explore and get used to. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** Make sure to take some time and set it aside to get used to the nature and set up of this program. It seems to be the future of setting up portfolios and collecting material and data to showcase, but it might also make physical art sort of obsolete to put in a portfolio. Technological advances are inevitable and as they have changed the face of art and media, this kind of program is bound to be born out of that. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** It enables you to collectively review material uploaded by other people. It can create essentially what it a digital portfolio. ### 10. It is easy to browse through students ePortfolios. It provides a fairly streamlined place to access student reflections and ePortfolios. Allows for all of campus to learn about a student through their ePortfolio. **What do you dislike about Digication?** Digication for creating ePortfolios isn't intuitive or user friendly. Searching for a student's ePortfolio is also a headache. It's only possible to search by the title the student has given the ePortfolio or what they have named themselves. This makes finding all the students in a particular class challenging. Digication does allow for some creative customization, but it does not have a user-friendly interface for customization, meaning the majority of our students do not put any effort into personalizing their ePortfolio. **Recommendations to others considering Digication:** As an ePortfolio tool, I hope there are better options. Before my time we went through a needs assessment to decide what ePortfolio tool was best, and Digication was chosen. However, we are currently at a point where we are thinking of not requiring it. It is not a tool students are interested in using and many majors that need ePortfolios (Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Journalism, etc.) opt to use more aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly website builders. **What problems is Digication solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our campus uses Digication to require students to create ePortfolios of their work through a common curriculum. The common curriculum extends throughout their four years on campus and the ePortfolios are a repository for their reflections and their academic work. ### 11.
