For my particular small business, the plethora of libraries and the integration with Fusion 360 is amazing. Eagle allows me to compete with companies many times larger than our current size. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

As an old school user I admittedly I don't like the yearly subscription model. It is a minor gripe and I do think the value is being added frequently enough to justify. As a mentor to students I would like to see the free version go to 3"x5" boards as many maker/educational projects I do need about that much space. Those few extra inches would ingratiate AutoDesk to the maker and educational community. KiCAD is maturing to a point where it is giving Eagle a real run for it's money. I have been using Eagle for over 20 years in the form of the original Cad Soft Eagle 4.1 for Linux. Recently Switched to Autodesk Eagle Professional. Autodesk has added 3D modeling capability to Eagle and integrated it into their Fusion 360 mechanical design software package (See my Fusion 360 review). I like the integration between to two software packages. Both are very reasonably priced. My old data files and component library's files transferred effortlessly. Eagle stores your boards data files locally (not in the cloud). Your part library files are in the cloud. This allows other users on your team to share part libraries. Subscription based software. The current trend in engineering software is that it is moving to subscription based. Advantage is low initial cost. In to old days you would shell out between $1500 - $25000 for the software and then pay an annual maintenance fee to stay current. If your company couldn't afford the maintenance fee, you would be stuck with an old version, but you could still get work done. Now you pay a much smaller fee annually to be able to work. Eagle is better in this area compared to Fusion 360, because your boards data file are still saved locally, so no worries that someone else might be able to get your files. Scripting and configuration engine is powerful to a fault. Easy capture of basic schematics and PCB layouts. Sync with Fusion 360 is pretty useful. Excellent MacOS and Linux support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Default configuration is not very good, but can be improved with some effort. Default libraries are mostly useless. The package wizard is okay, but not every package type is available. 3d packages are only available through the web-based tool. Poor graphics and text support on PCBs. DRC doesn't have many options and is not very flexible. Vias are selectively tented by size, not individually. Export to Fusion 360 does not work with complex models. Hard to open two schematic or PCB design files side-by-side. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Eagle is infallible in tracking board connections to ensure no incorrect connections or crossovers when schematic is realized as a board. As I lay out traces, it actively prevents clearance violations, forcing me to adjust other traces or vias. My board mixes 3.3V components with 180VDC switching voltages, thus clearances, ground planes, and single point grounding are critical issues. Eagle has been very reliable ensuring I meet my design constraints and not losing my work thru crashes or file corruption. Oh, and I like the ease in creating manufacturing files. There are many, what I would call convoluted, ways to get work done with Eagle. For example, to flood a polygon with copper, you do “ratnest”, and to remove it use “ripup”, not all that intuitive. I still have difficulty creating components, but I have workarounds which get me by. My component libraries are a mess, it would be helpful to have ways to better organize them, although this one may be operator training. I have learned the hard way to NOT pull from Autodesk Fusion360 other than the first (board shape) time, which causes me major headaches if i need to modify the board outline. Affordable tool with great 3D CAD integration making it a great package for small businesses like mine. Scriptability allows us to automate BOM generation and tie into parts databases we maintain and generate fabrication and assembly release packages. Integration with 3D CAD allows us to check fit before going for fabrication reducing design spins and improving first time success. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Lack of good support for controlled impedance for RF or high speed circuit design. There are ways to work around it for experienced engineers. Ability to import CAD formats such as Altium, Allegro, Orcad would be very handy. Currently these must be converted manually which adds cost for our service customers when they choose to transition to Eagle from another CAD package. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

- The web-based 3D model manager for libraries. It would be so much better if you could add/change/preview STEP files from the normal, offline interface (just like the footprint and symbol)

- Sometimes I can't place components anywhere I want outside the board outline (can't place them in negative coordinates?). This is true even with a Premium membership. I don't understand why I wouldn't be able to temporarily place a resistor in the negative coordinate space. If your board is placed at (0, 0) it's very useful to place parts there when "untangling" airwires.

- Drawing footprints could be much nicer if there were based mechanical-CAD-like features such as drawing a line at angle A with length L (e.g. length 1.43mm without changing the grid size to 0.01mm). Also being able to "snap" to other lines/shapes/corners. Some simple shapes are an absolute joy to draw in Fusion but a pain to draw in EAGLE. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

we had a huge project come in ( for the super bowl ) and were excited to use EAGLE as the primary tool for it. We have the cheapest paid for version of EAGLE. We started the project out and did the schematic layout etc, and then got to the pcb layout side of things. In short, we thought we were in the clear since it was a simple two layer board; however, it ended up being large enough that we were license limited. Admittedly, at that point, we abandoned EAGLE and swapped to KiCAD for the entire rest of the project. I understand the limitation on layers and potentially reserving features for the most expensive tier of EAGLE, but size? Why??

Designs typically are semi-organic. The overall size isn't known when you go into it. Usually it's a "make it as small as possible" mentality. As such, when new features are added in, typically the easiest response is "let's just make the board a little bigger". Whereas, the number of layers on a board is usually more rigid. This is primarily due to complexity of design as well as cost. I hear more often "we should have made this a 4 layer board" than "oh, let's just add a layer". This is because changing the number of layers is basically a full redesign. Whereas, board real-estate is much more organic.

To wrap up, organically hitting a license limitation is infuriating. As such, I'd strongly recommend removing board real-estate as a license limiting feature. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Accessible for a limited budget hobbyist. Easy to use. Large community uses it, so you can share and collect input from others. Although not 100%, you can find library of many parts in the open WEB, so you can add new components. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Current libraries of components are complicated to manage. Most common libraries available from Element14, Digikey, Adafruit, Ti, Atmel, Maxim and others are very limited in variety. 9 in 10 times a component is searched in the libraries, it can't be found. You end up having to either search the open web for the needed part or create the library yourself. There should be a online resource where all possible libraries are located and Eagle should either access this from there or, if a specific component is not present, automatically search online for the part. End user should not be spending the time to do this.

Also, as important as above, Eagle doesn't have a in-house g-code tool. User needs to rely on add-on from external sources to generate g-code, which is not a reliable way, to say the least. Eagle should have a very comprehensive g-code built in tool, with support for many different targets like, carving/engraving, laser, ect. and relevant settings to facilitate user interface. The best thing to like about Eagle are its price and simplicity. You can do anything from a simple single layer board to one with many components and layers for a very accessible price. Some of the more powerful tools offer better control over things like trace impedance, BOM generation, manufacturing package generation, CAD models, library symbol creation and the like.
