It allowed our team to compose complex data workflows in a simplified and easy-to-manage interface. I've used NiFi for both large and small projects. NiFi scaled well in a data processing environment where we needed to download and run deep-learning image detection models across TBs of satellite image data. Our software platform was rooted in elaborate yet organized NiFi flows. NiFi was essential in simplifying complex data pipelines involving dozens of image products with several data processing steps for each image source. NiFi scaled exceptionally well with high throughput and large data volumes, although its latency is not suited for real-time processing. I continue to use NiFi not only for data-intensive projects but for day-to-day software use cases. Its plethora of connectors makes it easy to extract, transfer, and load data to and from any set of data sources. It has largely replaced bash and python scripting as a quick and dirty way to connect data platforms and run simple data processing steps. This is because scripting in NiFi and connecting to various data sources is much faster than scripting in Python. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** My biggest complaint is not enough devs know about NiFi and use Airflow instead. Airflow and other similar data orchestration engines lack the UI and controllability NiFi offers. There is no NiFi cloud offering I'm aware of. While NiFi is easy to setup, it must be done yourself. **What problems is Apache NiFi solving and how is that benefiting you?** One of my projects used NiFi to download and process TBs of satellite image data. I also use it daily to connect to various data sources and run simple data processing steps. NiFi has largely replaced Python scripting for rapid data processing. ### 4. The ability to create Process groups and isolate your workloads. The number of prebuilt processors. The flow-based programming comes with a web UI built to provide an easy way (drag & drop) to handle data flow in real-time. It also supports powerful and scalable means of data routing and transformation, which can be run on a single server or in a clustered mode across many servers. Is one of the best open-source ETL tools because of its well-rounded architecture. It's a powerful and easy-to-use solution. FlowFile includes meta-information, so the tool's capabilities aren't limited to CSV. You can work with photos, videos, audio files, or binary data. The policy that it will remain free, the community of practice is impressive. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** Scalability issues, sometimes for bigger flows it can get slow and eat a lot of Heap Memory. Some Oracle drivers have issues. Error handling could be better. Creation of custom.NAR could be tricky sometimes. The time to see the feature in action is NOT the time-to-market. Making the working NiFi flow production-ready usually takes longer than for other data processing technologies. It is good to make it clear in advance. When working with real-life business logic, we prefer using Apache Spark for bigger data volumes or rest services with smaller amounts of data. In other words, for custom logic, we prefer avoiding NiFi. The beginner user might not be able to access the tools that are placed deep. Place drop-down to list the less used features to highlight these features. It is data source agnostic and supports sources of different formats, schemas, protocols, speeds, and sizes. Nifi enables tracking data flows from beginning to end. Nifi Enables dynamic prioritization of flows, modification of flows at runtime, and back pressure thresholds, which specify amount of data that may exist in the queue, to avoid overrunning the system with data. NiFi supports SSL, SSH, HTTPS, encrypted content. Ability to quickly ingest data (particularly streaming data), fork data sources to multiple applications (HDFS / Spark etc) with a strong audit trail. I like NiFi's web based user interface and highly configurable. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** It is hard to monitor in NiFi. provisioning and monitoring the mirror maker process can be hard. One need to monitor the metrics coming from mirror maker to see if there is any lag or no data being produced into target cluster. Most recent version of Java was not used and there are configuration and comparability issues. **Recommendations to others considering Apache NiFi:** I recommend NiFi support team to solve the provenance indexing rate issue. **What problems is Apache NiFi solving and how is that benefiting you?** Real-time data movement and multiple data source movement and it is possible generate pyspark or scala scripts using NiFi tool. Better than Camel and excellent for moving your data around. Records the lineage of data through the system! Did I mention it started as NSA tech? This software definitely gives you what you put into it and is tremendously customizable once you get a feel for how to use it. Beyond that, it's secure and proven to perform under high stress application! It's hard to stress how much work would be involved in developing a similar software solution on your own and that makes this perfect if you're looking for a robust and multi-faceted piece of software that can be customized in many ways. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** You might need more detail of tracking message lineage. You get what you put into it and while relatively easy to use and tremendously configurable, it may not suit your needs out of the box. If what you're looking for is something that is less robust and performs one of the single functions NiFi is used for, you might do better with something prepackaged or better off using a consultant to help you master the finer points and features. **Recommendations to others considering Apache NiFi:** Be ready to invest some serious time into getting a feel for the architecture and implementing this. Still, I can see rewards in a wide variety of fields for putting the investement into this. I'm able to bring data in from various sources with the ability to customize how and how often the data is imported, and then manipulate the data from within NiFi before sending it to whatever application will process the data further. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** The learning curve is steep and the developer community is small. That makes certain tasks unintuitive and difficult to figure out. This is probably because NiFi is a niche tool. The documentation exists, but sometimes leaves a lot to wonder, and I've sometimes resorted to checking out GitHub commits and Jira tickets to find answers. **Recommendations to others considering Apache NiFi:** Check out its compatibility with AWS if you're using AWS to store data. We've had some role and permissions difficulties since NiFi does not yet support ARN credentialing for uploading to S3 buckets. **What problems is Apache NiFi solving and how is that benefiting you?** The main business problem is being able to stream data constantly from an open-source tool. It is easy to install and monitor workflows/dataflows and also ingestion using graphs. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** It would be very nice if there was support for stateful operations for which data has to be looked up from look up tables or from other data flows within the organization. It is able to display complex data-flow and data-manipulation during the ETL process. It also has a real-time data ingestion progress, which you can see at a glance how much is being processed at any given point in time. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** NiFi did not have connectors for many data sources we wanted to ingest into the cloud platform. It did not have a good API support and had a data file limit for each upload. The learning curve is fairly steep for those who are not from IT background. The business users found it hard to use the tool to upload their own data and build a small pipeline. **What problems is Apache NiFi solving and how is that benefiting you?** The business was doing a proof of concept to see which tool make it easy for us to move large amounts of unstructured data. NiFi a new way to ETL **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** January 26, 2018 **What do you like best about Apache NiFi?** NiFi no longer just thinks about a batch process that you run on a schedule and then it is done. You really have to rethink the way that ETL is written to design an actual flow of data from any streamable source. It has all of the standard issue ETL paradigms with data in and data out but every piece of data is thought of as a stream with a branch and possible next flow to be fired. This is done beautifully with remote processors. It uses Zookeeper for its configuration management that though it is somewhat confusing as to what it does it keeps track of everything and allow for the clustering of NiFi. Really interesting ideas around how to deal with messaging platforms like Kafka as it can both be a consumer or producer so that it can act as an intermediary where code is not as easy to implement from a legacy system. **What do you dislike about Apache NiFi?** The community is still developing and is strong when it comes to Hortonworks. The documentation is fairly decent but it is not always obvious how things should work so there is a little bit of trial and error. Getting it spun up on AWS and Azure in a secure and maintainable way is still a little bit of a challenge though you can go with something like BatchIQ from the marketplace to spin it up with some extra cost. **Recommendations to others considering Apache NiFi:** Figure out how to get it installed in your environment and I'm sure you will find use cases for it.
