# Why do NetSuite users see different menus, and how should admins set up roles?

A question I keep coming back to is why NetSuite users see different menus and lists, and how admins should set up roles. Going by reviews, it's role-based access working as designed: each role shows only the menus and lists that role needs, which keeps screens focused and access matched to responsibility. When someone can't find a screen a colleague uses, checking their role assignment is the first step, and a homepage dashboard set up around the tools each person uses most helps new starters find their way.

In ERP systems, role questions tend to come up in three situations:

A new starter. A standard role plus a short tour of their dashboard.

Someone needing one extra screen. A role adjustment often covers it.

A reorganisation. Roles are worth revisiting as a group.

NetSuite suits organisations that want access matched to responsibility, with roles maintained as jobs change.

How often do you revisit role assignments? Seeing different menus is the role setup doing its job, and checking a colleague’s role assignment first is a good habit to teach. A homepage dashboard built around each person’s most-used tools helps, since it gives new starters a landing page that already matches their work. Does anyone keep a short written note of what each role is meant to see? It seems like it would make a missing screen quick to diagnose.
