# Which Xero features do small businesses end up paying extra for?

I'm writing a piece on what Xero actually costs a small business once the basics are running, and from the reviews the answer is that the core bookkeeping sits on the entry plans while multi-currency, expenses, projects and the deeper reporting are what people describe moving up a tier for. Invoice and bill volume is the other thing that pushes a plan change. Within Accounting software that tiering is standard, and it does mean a sole trader is not funding features built for a twenty-person firm.

What comes through positively alongside the cost discussion is that the entry tiers are genuinely workable rather than a trial in disguise. People run real businesses on them for years, which is why the step up gets noticed when it comes rather than being accepted as inevitable at signup.

We ran a real business on the entry plan for a good while before multi-currency moved us up. It was more than enough while we were small.
