# Which pharmacy management systems deliver patient counseling tools without vendor lock-in?

This is a specific challenge I keep running into. Our current system has decent counseling workflow support built in, but every time we want to integrate a tool we actually prefer, we hit a wall. Either it's not on the approved integration list, or the integration exists but costs extra and takes months to set up. Wondering if others have found systems that are genuinely open on this front rather than just claiming to be.

What G2 reviewers say:

PrimeRx: Interfaces with a wide range of software, and the assessment features for clinical pharmacy services are built into the core platform. Add-on integrations cost extra, but the optionality is there, which is more than some systems offer. Reviewers doing specialty pharmacy work describe adapting counseling workflows to their specific protocols.

Datascan Pharmacy Software: Compounding pharmacy reviewers specifically mention the team building out their documentation requirements directly into the software rather than forcing a generic template. That kind of willingness to adapt is the opposite of lock-in.

FrameworkLTC: Strong counseling and documentation depth for LTC, with EHR and EMAR integration. The integration network is broad but defined, so you're working within a known partner set rather than with open APIs in every direction.

Computer-Rx: Clean for standard retail counseling workflows. Reviewers note it's built for pharmacists, by pharmacists, which shows in how the queue and patient interaction flow is structured. Less suited if your counseling is specialty or involves complex documentation.

Has anyone successfully integrated a preferred third-party counseling tool with their PMS? What did that process actually look like, and was the openness real or just marketing?

Datascan sounds the most flexible if avoiding vendor lock-in is the priority, since reviewers describe the team adapting documentation and counseling workflows rather than forcing a fixed template. PrimeRx may offer broader third-party options, but I’d ask for the full integration list, API access, fees, and implementation timelines in writing before committing.
