# How do Slack users cut notification overload across many active channels?

Customisable notifications are one of the things people praise most about Slack, so I've been looking at how users cut notification overload once they belong to many active channels. The answer in G2 reviews is to set notifications per channel: mute low-priority channels, set others to mentions only, and keep full alerts for the few that need them. The overload appears with scale, in busy workspaces where integrations post updates into channels as well.

In business instant messaging, the deciding factor seems to be how many channels one person joins rather than how big the workspace is. Someone in fifteen channels can live with the defaults; someone in fifty needs a deliberate setup, and Slack gives them the controls to build one. A deliberate setup also keeps the alerts that do arrive meaningful, which is the point of customising them in the first place.

Setups I'd like to compare:

Mentions only as the default, with a handful of channels on full alerts

Most channels muted and checked at set times

Keyword alerts doing the work instead of channel settings

The point that channel count matters more than workspace size is the useful bit. Of the setups listed, the one that mentions only the default, with a handful of channels on full alerts, seems easiest to keep consistent, since the rule is simple enough to stick with. Keyword alerts feel like a good layer on top for anything that needs to surface across channels.
