# How do large Slack workspaces manage channel sprawl?

What does a large Slack workspace do about channel sprawl? I've been digging into it, and the pattern in G2 reviews is that sprawl builds once a workspace passes roughly a hundred channels without a cleanup routine, with important messages passing by in busy conversations. The teams that keep it in order give each project or topic its own channel, keep replies in threads under the original message, and archive or update channels on a regular basis.

Channels by project and threaded replies are exactly what people credit for keeping conversations organised. In business instant messaging, that structure suits teams willing to agree conventions early; teams that let channels grow freely have the same tools but get less of the benefit. Threads also keep a channel readable for people who join it later, which matters most in a workspace that keeps growing.

Curious about the upkeep side:

Who decides when a channel gets archived?

Did a naming convention make channels easier to find?

How strictly does your team reply in threads?

Which habit made the biggest difference for you?

Threads make the biggest difference for me. Keeping replies under the original message makes busy channels much easier to follow later, especially for someone joining the conversation midway through.
