What do you like best about YouTube?

That kind of personalization is a monumental feat of machine learning. I also like that it supports free learning sources, content creation, and even watching entertainment, all in one place. What do you dislike about YouTube?

YouTube’s recommendation engine seems optimized mainly for retention and click-through rate (CTR). That incentive structure naturally boosts sensational titles, exaggerated thumbnails, and high-energy commentary, often at the expense of quieter, high-density educational content. As a result, creators can feel pushed to optimize for “the algorithm” instead of depth, which encourages stretched-out runtimes and more superficial treatment of complex topics.

YouTube Search also feels like it has drifted from a straightforward index-style lookup tool into something closer to a personalized recommendation feed. When I search for a precise technical query—such as a specific syntax error, an obscure framework setup, or a niche algorithmic proof—the top results are often crowded with broad, only loosely related “popular” videos or channel recommendations, rather than tight keyword matches that directly answer the query. Recommendations to others considering YouTube:

Curate ruthlessly: don’t rely only on the home feed. Actively subscribe to high-signal channels, use the “Watch Later” queue for dense technical or educational videos, and build playlists to keep resources organized by topic.

Search smart: when you’re trying to solve a specific problem (like debugging code or setting up a framework), filter results by “Upload Date” so you’re seeing the most current approaches, since tech tutorials go stale quickly.

Leverage playback speeds: complex tutorials are often paced slowly, so don’t hesitate to use 1.25x or 1.5x to increase information density. Slow down only when you hit critical diagrams or detailed syntax explanations.

Niche down at first: the algorithm rewards specificity. If you want to stand out, start by answering highly specific, long-tail queries (for example, “How to build a GNN-based fraud detection system”) instead of aiming for broad topics right away.

Prioritize audio and pacing: viewers will put up with mediocre video quality if the information is strong, but bad audio causes immediate drop-offs. Get to the point within the first 15 seconds and skip the long intros.
